The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won’t make a search engine. And the next Mark Zuckerberg won't create a social network. If you are copying these guys, you aren't learning from them. It's easier to copy a model than to make something new: doing what we already know how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something familiar. But every time we create something new, we go from 0 to 1.

When it comes to improbable innovations, a legendary tech VC told Sebastian Mallaby, the future cannot be predicted, it can only be discovered. It is the nature of the venture-capital game that most attempts at discovery fail, but a very few succeed at such a scale that they more than make up for everything else.

Although software has become easier to build, launching and scaling new products and services remains difficult. Start-ups face daunting challenges entering the technology ecosystem, including stiff competition, copycats, and ineffective marketing channels. Teams launching new products must consider the advantages of “the network effect”, where a product or service’s value increases as more users engage with it. Apple, Google, Microsoft, and other tech giants utilize network effects, and most tech products incorporate them.

Publisher's Summary
How do venture capital deals come together? This is one of the most frequent questions asked by each generation of new entrepreneurs. Surprisingly, there is little reliable information on the subject. No one understands this better than Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson.
The founders and driving force behind the Foundry Group - a venture capital firm focused on investing in early-stage information technology companies - Brad and Jason have been involved in hundreds of venture capital financings. Their investments range from small startups to large Series A venture financing rounds. The new edition of Venture Deals continues to show fledgling entrepreneurs the inner-workings of the VC process, from the venture capital term sheet and effective negotiating strategies to the initial seed and the later stages of development.
Fully updated to reflect the intricacies of startups and entrepreneurship in today's dynamic economic environment, this new edition includes revisions and updates to coverage on negotiating, gender issues, ICO's, and economic terms. New chapters examine legal and procedural considerations relevant to fundraising, bank debt, equity and convertible debt, how to hire an investment banker to sell a company, and more.

Hugely detailed
Hugely detailed book on practically everything you need to know about venture capital and raising money through debt or equity.
The book is written from the perspective of what’s best for an entrepreneur/founder but it’s equally useful for potential start-up employees and angel investors, though there are some sections you can easily skip.

Excellent content, not to be passively read
Venture Deals is an excellent introduction into the world of venture financing that was meant for those actually getting involved in venture financing. I found the quality of the information to be excellent, though occasionally difficult to process in its audio form without having personal experience with financing. If someone wants to truly understand the information present, they might need to read it several times, or at the least have a physical copy of the book to accompany the listen. Nevertheless, excellent read for anyone in the industry or who is just curious!

Valuable but sometimes boring
An abundance of practically useful information for entrepreneurs. As a would-be startuper I found it also enlightening on how Venture Capitalists market in general works.
On the downside, sometimes the “plot” is a bit boring, the terms are often expressed in legal terms as if you were reading the term sheet itself.
