How could the performance have been better?

A narrator who relays a story with feeling instead of enunciating every single word as one would while reading. It was just reading.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. I thought this book would have been about a child and her missing mother, but it was only discussed in the beginning and end.
I wanted to return but kept hanging on in the hopes that the story would focus on the title and description of the book. It barely touched on it.

Any additional comments?

Written and read much like a high school essay, this book is loaded from beginning to end, with the enthusiastic and descriptive phrases that one learns in a beginner's writing class-so much so that it was impossible to hear anything but words read without the feelings of a good story telling.

Not for me

First let me say I could not even finish this book. Over half way in and I was still forcing myself to keep going in hope that the next chapter would explain all the 5 star rating? This is a story told from a small child's point of view on the loss of her mother and then her life. It is like a glimpse in a child's diary ( if one could even write) from age of about three or so. It's day to day almost and I just could not get into the on and on narrative that seemed endless. I received this book at no charge for an honest opinion. I tried my best but it just wasn't for me at this time.

Veronica's Grave--A Sweet Voice

What made the experience of listening to Veronica's Grave the most enjoyable?

I have read the print version and loved it. The Audible has such a sweet little girl voice as the narrator that it was a very enjoyable experience in an auditory way!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Of course, it had to be the little girl--Barbara.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved many scenes--especially right after little Barbara wishes to find out what happened to her mother, the Catholic school scenes with the nuns were hilarious, her training as a flight attendant, and then meeting the love of her life--her husband Dick.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Going back in time through the eyes of a child

At first I thought this book was a mystery, but it is not. This is the story of life through the eyes of a little girl after her mother "disappeared" from her life. The period details bring the era to life vividly and the characters are wonderfully present- voiced perfectly by the narrator.

Despite it not being a mystery I very much enjoyed this book and the writing. It is not what I would normally listen to but was very interesting and well written. I gave it 5 stars because it is great at what it is: a memoir.

Absolutely delightful

This is one of those books that had me crying one minute and laughing the next. I made the mistake of beginning it three or four hours before bedtime I had to stay awake and finish it, it is that good. The narration was perfect I loved the way she sounded like a child in the first part of the book and then expertly navigated the foreign languages toward the end of the book. Do yourself a favor and get this book. I was voluntarily provided a review copy by the author publisher or narrator

Wonderful Voice

Would you consider the audio edition of Veronica's Grave to be better than the print version?

I thoroughly enjoyed both versions of Veronica's Grave.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Veronica's Grave?

The author's ability to channel the thoughts and voice of a child and then those of an adolescent, teenager and young woman is brilliant. The stories of the early years of commercial flight and the new career "stewardess" were particularly fascinating.

What about Leslie S. Miller’s performance did you like?

The anguish of the story came through loud and clear.

Barbara Donsky's memoir is about losing her mother at an early age, thereby also losing her champion and cheerleader. This is a story of triumph, of a determined young woman who, despite her father's protestations, breaks away from the blue-collar family that raised her under the weight of secrets, to get an education and see the world. I especially enjoyed the story, having grown up in the New York City area, and I was able to put myself in so many of the locations the author described.

interesting book about familysecrets

I liked this book. I even got angry sometimes, when I didn't agree with what some family members said/did. The narrator was good too.

Well Done!

Would you listen to Veronica's Grave again? Why?

Absolutely! I started listening yesterday morning and pretty much listened straight through. Stopped only to sleep. The book is so beautifully written, the story so clearly remembered, the narrator so masterful in her understanding and interpretation.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Veronica's Grave?

Searching for, not finding, than discovering Veronica's grave is a scene that certainly deserves the title.

Which character – as performed by Leslie S. Miller – was your favorite?

Barbara, of course. Such a commentary on love in its many forms.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The candor of the Valentine's Day dinner, when Donsky provides a look at the depth of love beyond the romantic.

Any additional comments?

The narrator's abilities to tell the story in a child's voice, to use non-English words, and especially to sing snippets are nothing short of awesome. Audio readers will delight!

I was captivated by the life of Barbara. The narrator was fantastic in speaking different languages where needed and had a beautiful voice for the phrases that were sung.
