Publisher's Summary

Born into a life of privilege and secrets, Nora Blakely has everything any 19-year-old girl could desire. She's an accomplished pianist, a Texas beauty queen, and on her way to Princeton after high school. She's perfect. Leaving behind her million-dollar mansion and Jimmy Choos, she becomes a girl hell-bent on pushing the limits with alcohol, drugs, and meaningless sex. Then she meets her soul mate. But he doesn't want her.

When it comes to girls, 25-year-old Leo Tate has one rule: never fall in love. His gym and his brother are all he cares about...until he meets Nora. He resists the pull of their attraction, hung up on their six-year age difference. As they struggle to stay away from each other, secrets will be revealed, tempers will flare, and hearts will be broken.

Angst is only the beginning of the DRAMA

I am uncertain of my opinion of this book.

I would describe this as a survivors story for young adults perhaps. This story dealt with a high school senior who is 18 .... from a wealthy successful family .... but held dark secrets.

WARNING: This deals with incest/rape/mental abuse. Those difficult subjects were approached in a way I think would an inspiration to young people. HOWEVER, her attraction to an slightly older (24) year old male and his attraction to her was drawn out far too long ..... add that to the problems she faces with bullying at school, parents who are absent or mentally abusive .... her half-brothers rape and taunting .... the girl friend of her would be love interest being brutal ..... other girls in high school jealous of their boy friends apparent attraction to her, yet another rape attempt ..... you get way too much drama overload which is why I knocked it down to 3 stars. She does get her HEA ....but it was a long drawn out process.

The performance by Emily Durante and Sean Chriden is stellar as usual (I still don't care for Chriden's female voice). I used a credit for this book .... but recommend waiting for a sale.

Triggers

this was a really good story, however there should be a warning in the audio description about the abuse. I was abused as a child by a sibling and when it was first brought to light I almost DNF. however I was already invested in the two main characters Nora and Leo and wanted to see if they made it through.

Narration

I enjoyed the story even though it was a bit repetitive with the anguish each character felt. The female narrator was great with her voice inflections but listening to the male narrator was like fingernails on a chalkboard. I almost didn't finish.

love this story

Nora and Leo's romance was one of the best that I read this out far this season. I loved how much Nora loves after everything has happened to her. Leo is just so scared and it was just so amazing to see and hear what he went through and why he was the way he was. he is a protector, I love that because he knew she was hurt but didn't know that why. so for him to just just put everything aside of what she did to him and help her is something amazing to read in a book. the only thing I really didn't like was it didn't really give you an ending there wasn't much that they told you about what happened afterwards so that is something that I miss when the books don't complete each other. but I will probably read the rest of the books in this series

Love Ilsa

Performance: loved the female narrator as Nora, brought all the emotion and vulnerability. Not a huge fan of the male narrator- his voice did not really grasp Leo’s energy for me

Story:

“He’s my Romeo, but I’m not his Juliet.” Woah. Hold the phone- that drew me in right away, and since I enjoyed other Ilsa stories and new adult stories are my jam, I dove right in.

Nora is your class “perfect girl” drowning in the weight of expectations- smart, involved, perfect manners, and engaged leader- and she’s lost in this persona. Her mother family is overbearing or absent, and despite having everything on paper she’s both alone and unsure of herself. She’s hiding so much of herself, buried down her pain- and she’s breaking.

Our hero Leo is new to town- your typical tatted up “bad boy” that is so swoon worthy you want to lick the page. He’s older than Nora not only in age but in life experience- forced to become a parent to his younger brother at only 18 and has fought hard to gain success for himself and his family. After being forced to become an adult too soon, he’s finally enjoying the spoils of his life. He’s uninterested in connection- let alone a young high school girl.

The chemistry between these two could melt an iceberg- it sizzles- and that delicious push/pull keeps the romantic tension high. Leo denies and harmfully pushes her away, Nora continues to break, push-pull. At times, that dynamic grating and frustrating as a reader, but I was so invested in Nora in particular, I was rooting for them, turning page after page with hopes that they find their past their stubbornness to each other and that Nora starts to heal and for Leo to get over his baggage.

Nora really tugged at my heart- she makes some mistakes, but we know her so well as a character that we both understand and empathize with her- she’s trying to cope, she’s trying to survive, but she somehow has remind kind and hopeful despite the shattered parts of her cutting her from the inside out. The romance is captivating, but as captivating is the story of Nora as a character as he learns to live and love, to trust and repair.

This story snuck up on me and hooked me- and as usual, Ilsa completes deeply charismatic and damaged characters who are developed with nuance and care with a smart and sharp prose. This is a story of unexpected soulmates- a love with depth and grit, bittersweet and beautiful in it’s journey.

It was okay.

This was just okay. I was kind of traumatized by how the female protagonist acted at first. I don't even understand why the male protagonist was even interested at first. I prefer to hear about messy PAST stuff, not CURRENT messy behavior. However, it was still a good, entertaining story.

Yasssss!!!

This was an awesome book!!! I love these types of books. A little push and pull with some pain makes any book stick with me. We all have our demons, hard times and the little sweet times in between can be eaten up by the demons. This book shows that but in the end love will prevail!!!
