Publisher's Summary

Magic weapons. Deadly monsters. Epic quests. All just another day in the life of a Vigil.

Boyd Knight found his calling when he joined the Marines and qualified for the elite Force Recon. He’d found a tribe and a family, so when a hand grenade landed near his team, he jumped on it without thought or regret.

But instead of winding up dead, he wakes up butt naked in a cave full of monsters with a knife in one hand and a pistol in the other. He’s been chosen by Raguel, Five-Faced God of Justice, and entrusted with the power of the Vigil Bound. Every kill makes him stronger, and thanks to the Ascendant System, Boyd can level up, unlock increasingly powerful spells, and even harness the abilities of the monsters he’s been dispatched to hunt.

If he can survive the deadly shapeshifter stalking him from the shadows, Boyd’s second life promises to be even more ass-kickingly epic than his first.

From the bestselling author of Rogue DungeonBibliomancer, Shadowcroft Acadmey for Dungeons and Viridian Gate Online comes a shoot-'em-up LitRPG fantasy series brimming with spells, upgrades, guns, and monsters!

Magic Slinger

military man transplanted into magical game world gone right. I loved the story and characters after a while I figured who the baddie was before it was that time. kind of hate that the character delved into magic spells so much but still made for some interesting interaction and story.

Was kind hoping the mc would stick to a gear crafting/scale abuser. Hopefully see more of that in the next book. Loved the limit break like transformation at the end. An artificer soldier was an amazing idea and had so many things that could have been done with it. His partners are hilariously one of the best parts of the book. I hope they also only get better as the story goes on.

An mc that can resist the seductions of women was rather refreshing and made the end even better. Was nice to see he had standards and knew he had things that needed done first. Also, like that he took time to do a tutorial after failing.

Great concepts, great author, poor execution

I like Jame's Hunters books in general. For instance, Viridian Gate was the kind of audio book series that is representative of the best LitRPG has to offer. It was with great optimism that I started listening to this series.

The premise is interesting, the characterizations are pretty good (redneck LitRPG character with real guts and a comic sidekick) and the magic system is pretty cool. But holy cow, the execution is soooo lacking. I found my mind wandering while listening to the point where the book faded into background noise. The bad part about that is that when I started paying attention again, I hadn't really missed anything important.

For instance, the main character will spend extended periods of time reading menu items, or reading a list of "x scales = y points" and by list, I'm talking about the entire list of 20 items where the ratio between items stays constant. The plot is meandering as well and after waiting and waiting for it to get better, I ditched at about 40%.

What a letdown, Return!

Well, I thought this was going to be good since it knew what rip-it was and had some of the military terms right, but it was just trash. The MC was a fool who was just making mistakes a Marine who died in combat would never be making in his second life or in his first one. The idea that he would allow the pixy to live and not just live but dictate the relationship power was too much for me. That made me stop listening, also I didn’t need to go in too deep to figure out that that the chick with the big boobs was the shape shifter as she could see the pixy, it’s just too simple. I really expected a better MC since he had the military background and was supposed to be serious, but this was all trash and not worth the credit because I’m returning it, as this guy doesn’t follow any military anything at all.
If you want something to compare it too, listen to Defiance of the fall or The Primal Hunter and see the difference in the MC level of cognitive breakdown of situations versus this were the MC keeps a pixy around without any real check that has little to no true benefit who wants to steal from him and kill him and who keeps attacking him or plotting against him. It makes no sense to me and is just a distraction. It isn’t even a comedic relief because, I don’t see how someone threatening your life is comedy, so yeah, this one is a return.

Looking forward to more!

l loved this.
Great story and excellent world building.
if you like LitRPG, and the Dresden Files you'll probably enjoy this.

Although I really don't like the pixie especially the extremely irritating voice the narrator picked to voice it.
It's like nails on a chalkboard.
Narrator is otherwise excellent, as usual.

I will definitely be getting the next book when it comes out although I may just get the ebook to avoid having to listen to that character.

Yeah it’s a good one

So I’ve seen it on my recommendation list for a good while. And then I saw a TikTok on it.. and immediately grabbed it.

There is a whole lot to like with this J A Hunter is a solid storyteller and Luke Daniela is an exceptional Narrator.

I haven’t laughed as often while listening to a book since I listened to Crystalist (RinoZ)

Good but overly wordy

There’s times when a simple sentence would suffice but the author seems to use multiple paragraphs and at points I was thinking “we get it, move on please” but overall it’s a good story
