Horrifyingly Good!!!

Unique story! Brutal! Not for the faint of heart, Invested Characters, Amazing Narration. I am curious to see how the 3rd book plays out, I am also wondering how the high templars are so powerful and how there are so many of them that strong. The MC is terrifyingly strong but yet.... I don't want to give to much away but there are somethings that make me wonder. I highly recommend this book if your looking for something off the beaten path, that will make you go oh shit the author went there and didn't look back. This book is not for the kind of people that are easily offended about torture and or the other side of the human equation. No Harem or sexual content thankfully, there is some romance but not the kind of oh god i need to skip this chapter. Cover art is sick!

Solid sequel

This book is a solid sequel to the first story. There is an outstanding amount of character progression, and some new characters are brought into the mix.

PROS:
The book's flow is pretty well thought out, and there are time-skips to overcome boring sections. A lesser author would probably have tried to flush out more side quests or flood the book with flavor text just to make the book longer, and probably cut it into 2 books, but the author takes a classy stance, and I appreciate it.
As for the MC, she is very well written and doesn't make any arbitrary decisions that the character wouldn't make. For instance, the MC doesn't randomly become a monk, or instantly know plant magic because of some implausible history that was never brought up before or something crazy like that. Few things annoy me in a book more than some underdog victory out of nowhere based on a critical ability or knowledge that the character has had all along, and it was never discussed. That doesn't happen in this book at all.
The story is following an MC that is effectively a street rat that is now standing on her feet, and the story doesn't randomly add in inner monologs of the upper echelon of society. Sure the exposition could be flooded in with chapters upon chapters from a greater perspective to 'add world building,' but the MC isn't seeing the world from that perspective. So that would just ruin the scope of the MC's worldview. The MC doesn't care about it, and it is only brought up in passing that such things even exist. I think this shows the author's skill by employing discretion.

CONS:
I do have a minor dislike -- the topic of romance and all that entails keeps being brought up. I don't want it, and the MC certainly doesn't like it, and yet it still gets put in the story. I understand that the author was probably pressured into it by expectations of the genera, and I know some people want to have that part explored, so I didn't lower the star rating. Still, having a teenage girl keep saying "stop bringing it up" and having other people bring it up is cringy. I guess, given no other option, I'd rather have the cringe than the author changing the MC's characteristics just to match some cookie-cutter persona just to appease fans of the genera.

a very satisfying sequel to the first volume.

everything was spot on, from story to narration. I ended up going to royal road to get more of the story.

Huge disappointment compared to volume 1

The narrator is fantastic, but the writing quality take a significant dive from the first volume. The author seems to prefer writing a new character and this results in the “main” characters arc suffering enormously. Reading the new characters chapters was like trudging through slug. They also tend to be be longer chapters and there are a lot of them. The main character didn’t even get a completed arc, despite this book being longer than the first one. Wouldn’t recommend.

NEED BOOK 3! (Spoilers I think)

Let me start by saying I did not expect to like this series. I went in head first no clue about it BUT This series has me in its pocket! It’s just so… different? If that’s the right word. I love how the mist watcher is explained from both sides of the story. PLUS Lgbt rep! Love! Love! Love! Not to mention the narrator! All my love to them! It’s unique to my book palette and I can not wait for the next one!

I need more!!!

I never knew I needed an asexual (slightly on the spectrum) main character, until I got one! Now I need more but i can't find info anywhere as to if there will be another book in the series.
My review of the first book still stands. The narrator is AMAZING, the world is vast and mysterious, and the plot is beyond engaging. The character motivations are so well fleshed out and I never know who I will be rooting for next. You are looking for a morally grey hero, Vita is perfect. In this book she makes a decision I don't agree with and I LOVE IT. If a morally grey character never dips a toe into true villainy and only does good, are they truly grey?

I would recommend this book

I wholeheartedly enjoyed this book I especially appreciated the contest with the main character and the so-called monster if you would like an interesting read on what defines someone as a monster give this this book a shot as for the narration the voice actress did a very good job except for at the very end it appears she mixed up voices with a different character there we're also a few times where there appeared to be longer pauses at the beginning of sentences then there should have been maybe about an extra two or three seconds I would recommend someone either audible or whoever produces the books does a bit quality checking before releasing the book

More Vigor Mortis Please!!!!!

Hands down the best Audible series ever. The story, the narrator, and the production quality were all spot on (just amazing). I hope there will be a volume 3. I will miss the characters that I loved, then hated, then loved again. I was sorry to see this book end. If you haven't read this, do so. A great mix of humor, horror, camp, and romance. Natalie Maher write faster. Jessica Almasy you need an Oscar. Thank you for sheer enjoyment. May the Mist Watcher bless you!

I can't wait for more!

I began with the first book on a complete whim and I won't lie I didn't think much of it, but thought the story and premise enough to warrant giving the second book a shot.
I could not be more satisfied with this decision! As in the second book I truly felt the characters grow along side the story progressing.
The first book felt a little like a filler arc for something, but in retrospect it is a very welcome set up to what is now one of my favourite series.
I cannot wait for future instalments and fully intend on seeing this story to its end.

I will restrain from giving anything away but the themes really hit home in the second book and I felt myself identifying with the characters a lot more than I normally do with most media.

A doubtless recommendation from me.

A little disturbing, and yet deeply human

Great continuation of this dark, endearing story

As in the first books, the MC is almost a psychopath, and yet you can't help but root for her.

It is probably good if some parts of this story makes you feel uncomfortable, but it is offset by some very real human moments.

This line between moral and amoral in a world that is ruthless and uncompromising is what really makes this series for me.

If you enjoy a character based, none-standard, morally conflicted 'hero' stories, this is well worth your time.

happy yet heart broken

Im a 40K fan. a big 40K fan so I'm no stranger to the grim and the dark yet somehow i was not ready for volume 2. the writing gripped my attention word for word. It stirred my inner terror as it went on yet still kept a vague hope that I continued to lose and got back over and over. I find myself dreading volume 3 with anticipation but it can not come sooner for me to pre-order. It is worth giving 5 stars.

Very good

Since a it's a second book, you probably already know how good the story is. The second instalment is even better than the first!
My only problem is that the ending was kinda a cliffhanger. I'm still worried what did happen to the important souls by the end of the book. I hope that they're safe :D
I also checked out the author's websites, and the bad news is that the third book isn't ready yet 😭

Exceptional Listern and heart warming

Im really enjoying how the story is coming along, I really am, the MC's growth being mixed into personal challenges as well as romantic challenges, its so well done and heart warming.

hands down though my favoret story from this volume, is Lark, just... wow.. the imagination to think up such a character and her challenges and growth, tis heart breaking at times, amusing at others and the climax at the end! ha! I really look forward to finding out what happens to her.

Darker than the first book, loved it.

a strong continuation from the first book, much darker in theme as well.

Some very poignant moments, with some good questions that I asked myself when the circumstances arrived.

Grief, PTSD trauma, mistakes, security, and strong writing about body dysmorphia built into a fantasy story that highlights but doesn't preach or be the focus of the narrative. There is heartbreak too, and loss.. Powerful story so be warned, but it was thoroughly rewarding.

The voice actor is a lot less frantic than book 1, with more focus on differentiating voices and inflections. It was easier to follow than the first book, and the VA certainly stirred my old heart with her voices of grief and pain. loved it

Darker and better

I really liked the 1st book but this one is even better. The story was unpredictable in a good way and didn't shy away from darker situations.

I also really liked the alternate perspectives throughout, especially getting to see a bit of Penny's thoughts.

The world building is fantastic with allot of immersing mysteries.

Bigger and Darker.

To get this out of the way: I was a bit worried after reading some reviews, so I thought I'd clarify in my own that although there is a bigger focus on different POVs in this volume, the lion's share of the story belongs to Vita. She's still undeniably the main character.
Anyway, if you liked the first book, this is more of it! A lot more of it, in fact, being substantially longer and also, way darker. Vita's found a backbone, folks, and she will just not stop beating people with it.
Narration is superb, just as last time. Jessica Almasy does a fantastic job with Vita especially- she brings a delightful manic energy to the table, which honestly really helps you sympathize with the protagonist even as she commits vile atrocities.
