They were the Savages. Raiders from our distant past. Elites who left Earth to create tailor-made utopias aboard the massive lighthuggers that crawled through the darkness between the stars. But the people they left behind on a dying planet didn't perish in the dystopian nightmare the Savages had themselves created: they thrived, discovering faster-than-light technology and using it to colonize the galaxy ahead of the Savages, forming fantastic new civilizations that surpassed the wildest dreams of Old Earth.

Speed, surprise, and aggression... Hit on Jackpot is go.
The scourge of the Savage Lands, an ancient dragon allied to a gathering storm of dark forces threatening the world of Ruin, becomes the next target of the most fearsome shock troops ever conceived, prepared, and trained for total war: US Army Rangers.
Deep beneath a once-fantastic ruined empire, a creature more terrible, diabolical, and malevolent than any myth ever told lies atop a vast horde of wondrous treasure and deadly magic, dreaming dreams of greed and terror. The Rangers of the Ruin will thread the dangerous trap-laden depths of a deadly desolation sinking into a foul swamp in order to get their hit on the ancient prize.
But be warned, the fight you pick with Rangers is going to be the last fight you pick.
It's Rangers vs. Dragon as the saga of Forgotten Ruin continues! Audiobook also includes after-action report with authors and Ranger quality-control advisors!

Great 9hr story, w 2hrs of filler
The story is great. The reading was great. Despite that, I only gave it two stars. Anspach and Cole have started doing this deceptive filler BS, at the end of the story, and it makes the title appear to be a lot more story than it actually is. And they’ve started doing this on most of their books. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great extra content, and it should absolutely be out there, but on a podcast. I don’t have spare cash, and I don’t buy titles under 10 hours. After buying almost every title they’ve put out, since day 1, I feel like they “tricked” me.

Great first half ......But not worth the Credit
Excellent addition to Forgotten Ruin, but really only about of 6 hours of story content. The rest is Historical filler that I really did not enjoy at all. I generally don't get books any less than 8 or 10 hours with my monthly credit so this book left me a little short. My advice reading this one would be the way to go

only actually half as long
So at about 4 hrs and 50 mins left of the book is actually the end of whats going on story wise and the rest is back story. not back story of talker or any other rangers, just back story on the ruin. Really feels like it should have been a .5 book or something. a prequel. Feel a bit shafted honestly. The books are getting shorter and shorter with none of the fun fluff the first character had, like showing off side characters more. which is dumb as there's plenty of rangers that haven't been introduced in any real way. Just feel like there's a lot that could have been done here but they decided to focus on one thing and then tell 4 HOURS OF BACK STORY.
*Spoilers*
My man helps kill a dragon and accidentally cucks himself which was funny and depressing.

Loads of content in this book.
As the title says, there's loads of content in this book. The main story is just what you'd expect, Rangers solving problems. Calmly. Gently. Politely. Rangers all still suffer from amnesia though as none of them seem to remember the core of grunt linguistics. The almighty f word. "Surprise losers" still causes me to physically wince when I hear it. However this series still very enjoyable read. Or I guess listen to since I'm on audible.
I've seen reviews that complain about it so I'll just throw this out there: This story is shorter than the others. It is still just as enjoyable as the others. However it is indeed shorter. People have a problem with that because they looked at the audio length and didn't realize a moderate portion of it is bonus content and not the story itself. If you have an issue with that, buy the text version. Definitely worth the read.
Now for the bonus content:
The events that took place leading to the ruin. Holy $+&# the way in which they present the "lore" behind the collapse is phenomenal. I actually really enjoyed the story from 3 different view points as things unfolded. A great way to present the very beginning of the fall. I'm sure people would like a little more in depth of a dive later on down the road though. However I really liked having the additional information of the beginning of the end and how it was presented.
The AAR was enjoyable as well. It was cool to hear from the advisors about their thoughts on the series as well as sharing their experiences as Rangers. Both were entertaining. Usually I tend to skip authors notes and ramblings at the end of books however this was the first time listening entirely. I'd definitely listen to the constant censoring of Chris at the end of each book.
Can't wait for Lay the Hate to come to audible.

Who doesn’t want to listen to a bunch of Rangers taking vengeance upon a dragon? This might be the best book in the series so far and I really liked the first two as well. There is also a lot of backstory in the last third of the book which is pretty neat.

I personally dont like books/stories that jump back in time or in this case swaps between the present and the past. Half the book is one fight which is spoiled at the start, the other half is back story.
I enjoy the world building in this series and the characters etc are all decent, but nothing happens and the "recounting" style takes any tension or bite from the story. The anecdotes and coffee talk just seem like filler.
I am hopeful for the series but it feels flat after the first book

Great story and pacing
The third book in the series is fantastic! I really enjoyed the style of narration and the character development.
The already great writing style has become even better!
I also enjoyed the additional section offering a glimpse at the origins of the Ruin. It was very interesting and fun!
Looking forward to listening to the rest of the series!
