Publisher's Summary

A Russian weapon engineer's work is never done. Not while the Imperial Legion marches.

After dying, losing his soulmate twice, building elemental cannons, and knocking down more than metaphorical walls for the Crimson Alliance, Vlad is looking for a place to call his own: a crafting guild that will be able to produce the most overpowered loot the world of VGO has ever seen.

Gathering his personal guard, Vlad sets off across the monster-infested Storme Marshes to find the perfect power source, hidden away in the guts of a mysterious sunken ruin. Unfortunately, the mob from old Earth hasn't forgotten him, and Vlad isn't the only one with a thirst for forbidden inventions. He has less than a week to overcome enemies new and old, or his dream of a guild hall for all crafters will be lost forever.

From James A. Hunter - author of Viridian Gate Online, Rogue Dungeon, War God's Mantle, and the Yancy Lazarus Series - and author N. H. Paxton comes an epic new entry into the Expanded Universe of Viridian Gate Online that you won't want to pause!

narration killed it in the end

I've enjoyed this series a lot and found this character interesting. narration wasn't to bad until about the last 3.5 hours when some characters were introduced and he decided to go with the most annoying voices you could imagine. I tried to get through it over a week in 15 minute intervals but in the end I abandoned it with 2 hours remaining. if you love screeching, whiny voices this is for you but I couldn't take it.

Excessively Padded

I'm enjoying the VGO series and side stories but this one felt like about 20% of it could have either been cut entirely or altered. The protagonist is a crafter, fine. The excessive description of every craft step just bogs it down. if it were being performed in some dramatic situation where success or failure mattered in the circumstance or there was a real threat that he was operating under, that would be different. Instead, it's entire chapters going through described actions in safe environments.

Another Winner!

I'm currently binging my way through VGO, albeit in an unorthodox order, but I've loved them all so far! Personally I do like the main story line the best (Jack's) though I do really enjoy the side stories. It truly is an amazing world James Hunter has created, and I've enjoyed every corner of it so far! Can't wait for the next!!

franchise

I’m having trouble getting to work this morning so I’ll be brief. This book is good and recounts more about the world, showing more sides of already introduced aspects like overminds and charecters.
Vlad is a good main charecter and continues to be a major and honest personality throughout the book.
I really enjoyed a lot of the stuff that’s hard to say outside of spoilers, but what I can say is that this is one of the most… dense books in terms of new information I’ve read in the whole of VGO. I heartfeltly recomend it.

My least favorite Viridian Gate Online book

Vlad has kind of been relegated to the comic relief character in the other books. This is why I was pleasantly surprised about the depth of his character in the first book. The first book was not perfect but overall enjoyable. This book on the other hand felt like it had all the bad and shallow writing I was anticipating in the first book.

Vlad doesn't have alot of character development in this book though that actually isn't the biggest problem. I found that the biggest problem where the side characters. Most of the side characters talk like they're kids in middle school (which they may well have been before the transition so it's excusable) What is not excusable is when the villains start talking in the same annoying juvenile manner. It also didn't help that the voice actor was not very good at differentiating each character's voice and was very good at making them sound very annoying...though you can't blame him too much when the dialogue is just that bad.

not crazy about the reader

It may be because I started with the main story line about Jack first but alot of the voices for characters in this one are totally different than those from the main story line which was realy annoying. the story line was good and i love Vlad as a character.

exceptional in every way

everything from start to finish flawless and captivating, only wish same narrator as main series read so the characters voices would have been the same

Great character

I really like VGO. There is so much depth to the world. The “spin-off” books add a lot to the main characters in the series. I like that the plots are interconnected. Villas Adams did a fantastic job with his narration of this book.

A great Upgrade

How can we not love our stoic adventurer so it's good news to see an entire series about Vlad.
But how can we have Vlad match the adventure of Jack , well it seems quite easily as an intricate mastery of alchemy, enchanting, magic and engineering might make this my favourite secondary character in the entire VGO universe as he upgrades from the first story.
No spoilers but this audio will keep you on the edge as Vlad attempts to create a masterful new Guild and investigate more of the past mysteries that has been hinted at.
Great narration and editing as well.
I just cant get enough of Hunter and he can write no wrong (haha) and Paxton seems to me a great match to where I'm confident in saying I would read Paxtons solo books. 6 stars out of 5 if i could

A fantastic listen overall

This book is full of details I love there is crafting, alchemy and a dungeon crawling adventure.

The world of Viridian Gate Online is intricate. I enjoyed the technical details of crafting and alchemy it can't be easy combining science and alchemy but it does add depth to the world created.

As crafting is important loot and character development is relevant to more than defeating a boss Vlad's actions and creations can sometimes impact on how his faction plays the game and how the game/world operates. Which I enjoyed as there is chance of failure, opportunities for success.

The first book was very good but this one was great. I like Vlad he is is capable, direct and has a purpose. He has flaws and regrets but those make him seem human and the angst is kept to very small doses, which I appreciated.

I enjoyed the humour in the book especially Vlad and the librarian.
I liked how Vlad makes friends slowly and that privacy is respected rather than be told everything right away.

I liked the chapter titles and that the stat tables are kept to a minimum as they are handy in books but can be tedious in audio.

The narrator did an excellent job, there are tricky accents which can't be easy to do. Vikas Adam I hope will always be the voice of Vlad.

The pace of the book was good and I was never bored.

I look forward to the next book.

Struggle

The story is good and want to keep listening, but for me the narration is annoying me. The voices for some of the characters are just bad. That being said.... the voice of Vlad is awesome.
