Where are we?
I'm definitely losing interest in this story. Giant two handed swords with glowing runes. 'Steampunk' garb and tools. All I see is world of Warcraft and I can't pretend it isn't.
Perhaps it's my disappointment in the visuals that caused me to notice the writing was frustrating as well. Simile after simile after simile. My eyes began to roll wondering how many times the author must have typed "like a".
*spoiler*
Finally, the course of the characters seemed forced to me. Why did it have to be the spider queen that brought Jack to the dungeon? Why didn't Jack warn the dungeon boss that he just befriended that there's a major raid going on and to watch his back? Why was Jack so gung- ho to face the emperor (like a newb idiot) but didn't take the few seconds required to pound him like a tent stake when he had the chance?
I can only give the book a 3/5 mostly due to the previous story line that brought us here.

Took a hard downturn
While I enjoy the ongoing story in concept, and I enjoy all the characters except the MC, he ruins the entire story.
He constantly leaps from one insane reaction to a situation to another, and he just flat does stupid things while justifying it in his own mind like he's some kind of genius.
Spoilers
The most insane example of this is, spoilers, when the MC manages to get the big boss finally at his mercy. Hundred or two feet fall, in a world that establishes that even a moderately bad impact can paralyze you, concuss you, or snap your spine, without killing you. "Oh good!" you would say, walking over to the COMPLETELY INCAPACITATED ENEMY WARLORD and kill him. He's stupidly strong, but eh, what's a dozen or two hammer hits to the head.
What's that? You're going to "remember the battle is bigger then just him" and leave him? Let him recover? IN A WORLD WITH HEALING POTIONS?! IN A WORLD WHERE LEVELS MATTER AND HES THE TOP?!
Ok, fine. What's the worst that could happen?
Oh, he's got a magically hidden army of mecha and tinkers, and in the span of like... thirty minutes recover, assemble the murder legion, and somehow destroy not one, but two separate forces! Without any confirmed reports, including from your mind bound minions until the literal last moment.
I'm mad. I liked this series and stuff like the main character acting not just dumb, but actively working against himself because "reasons" truly irks me. Why not tell the guy who made this world about the literal gam changing weapon you found? Maybe you have bigger fish to fry?! Or not, because it's both a horrifying evil awful oh god the world is ending situation, and also you can't be bothered to care about it at all or warn literally anyone of authority in or out of your faction. Huge plot holes and lazy story development
Great narration – poor story.
The premise is good, but the writing is way too formulaic. Plot holes – ugh, plot holes and lazy writing for days!
So the main character is supposed to be an experienced gamer, but is constantly making mistakes that would make even a casual gamer cringe.
He is presented as this genius smart guy, and all of his friends and associates are impressed with his ideas, strategy, and wit. He makes ridiculous far fetched plans and decisions that always work out, but when faced with simple problems with glaring answers are presented to him, he ALWAYS (as in every single time) makes the obviously bad choice and has to be bailed out by his friends or “barely scrape through.”
Let's talk about his outlook/attitude: he flips between arrogantly cocky, a beacon of virtue, even keeled, constantly second guessing himself, and full of self doubt. Instead of choosing a character mentality (smart guy, cocksure asshole, Mr. Virtue, emo kid, etc.) the author tried to do it all, and it leaves you with a bi-polar, sometimes schizophrenic who is frequently high on coffee and sugar. Be ready for some whiplash.
Is there a serious/semi-serious fight happening? Things start off well – take a turn for the worst – and right at that point where things are going to go terribly wrong or maybe somehow work out – this is when the main character decides to ponder the meaning of life – or the price of beans – or what his favorite color is or should be (you know – to build suspense) – then he makes the right choice and hooray it somehow works out. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
It is very frustrating because the premise is great, and the overarching story isn't bad either. It is the details that ruin this series.
Does it get better later on in the series?
No.
It doesn't.
The author uses the same old formulas and patterns over and over. Which is a shame because with just a little bit of rewriting this could be one of the best series in the genera. It really had that much potential, but I'm 5 books in and it is just the same pattern repeating endlessly.

Grim Jack is back and you're gonna be in trouble
We return for the FOURTH installment of an amazing series. Can I start by saying we need more Cutter? Love the guy. Any way, we pick up just a bit further down the road than where we had left off, but that's fine. We had an impending army of Doom approaching and I really didn't want to read half the book talking about how they were going to get there and what was gong to happen. Hunter knows how to pen a story.
Grim Jack and his team are back (Cutter rules), and my only complaint is that I'd like to see Abbey doing more. I know this is Jack's story, but Abs needs to do something to prove she deserves to be co-captain of this squad. Something really serious, just look at everything Jack has managed to do almost entirely on his own.
Anyway we get some new characters and a new looming threat to add to the dangers they now face. Love the Gravemonger! We also get a face off with Jack and Ozmark, too! I can't spoil it for you.
Anyway, we get a great bunch of action, that leads into a new threat that could literally spell the end for our heroes. VGO is an amazing series that just keeps getting better and better. One thing I like is that just when you think you know where it is going it veers off that path and starts driving through thick brush and briars. I've said a lot about Taylor's narration in other reviews, so just know that he is doing a great job, and I think he is growing right along with Grim Jack. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.
If this review helped, please press the YES below. Thank you immensely!!!

Meh story, Meh reader, Meh MC
This reader... Likes to add dramatic... Pauses to sentences in... weird places. Maybe this series would be better with a better reader, but as is it comes off like a parody of William Shatner. Listening to the support characters fawning over the brilliance of the MC as he slowly struggles his way through simplistic thinking is just exasperating. He seems to think he's the smartest guy around, and everyone is constantly amazed at his incredible surprising insights, but it comes off like a child excitedly bragging about how they've just invented the brilliant strategy of using larger numbers. I'd previously stopped listening to this series after the third book because it was mediocre at best, then came across this fourth one a year later when looking for something new and thought "Oh yeah, that series, it wasn't that bad, was it?". It was a mistake.

Why???
I really love this series, but this time around the author dropped the ball in my opinion. The main character (Grimm Jack) made questionable decisions at every turn, ranging from confusing to outright stupid and the entire time, the author is presenting those decisions as if they're clever. More than once I just felt extremely frustrated with Jack, like when he had his enemy on the ground nearly dead and decided to walk away because he didn't know for certain that he could finish him off. despite having every advantage in the situation, and being more than capable of doing so. That wasn't the most frustrating part, but it was the first one that comes to mind, and it is one of many. I still enjoyed a lot of elements this story had to it, but I hope the author improved his ability to write believable character decision making in the future installments. Ultimately, it is still worth the read. just be prepared for frustration.

Not good
I really don't think the author as a very good grasp on the English language. The MC is always "rounding" on someone and precedes to just talk to them normally. That's not how you use that word. They're several more things like this, but that one bothered me the most. I also really hate the narrator's yell. It just really bothers me.

Thoroughly enjoyable
I’m not a gamer IRL but this was a fun trip into the world of MMORPG. Armen Taylor delivers a very entertaining and compelling performance. I loved it!!

Author needs a personal cheat sheet to keep up with details he adds.
The story itself was enjoyable, and while I enjoy all the new skill and loot additions throughout the series, these additions are meaningless if they are then neglected for the rest of the series. Hunter seems to forget many of the features he himself added. Like, for instance, MC still using pm’s in frantic situations instead of the commander’s communication skill faction unlock, and damage skill damage info ignoring effects like his innate boost to those skills etc. More grievously, the entire previous book was centered around a certain item set and the moral dilemmas involved with its collection, only to have the max set bonus completely ignored in this book. These are just a couple of a growing number of misses. While these by no means ruin the books, it’s highly disappointing considering this a series in a genre that revolves around the RPG elements like the effects of skills, abilities, and loot/gear.

I like VGO, BUT.....
and that's a BIG but. This writer uses the word 'but' like an aging porn star. Everytime he begins to wind up a sentence he interrupts it with 'BUT...' over and over and over again as if this is the only way he can think of to create tension or tell a story with shifting perspectives.
It's frustrating to say the least and has become a running joke within the series.
Let any singular moment begin to build up towards the anticipated payoff BUT nah.

Meh
Bland story, the characters are extremely juvenile in the way the worlds ended yet barely feels like it has an impact and these 2 grown men are acting like children even when something bigger comes up they still act like a personal beef is more important... It's a good first attempt at litrpg saga but the writer clearly isn't a gamer and needs to stop explaining the moralities, and also introduce more players in the story we've had maybe a dozen players and they are all very generic stereotypes of different nationalities. Unique rare quests are so common in the story and depend on making decisions anyone could make and rewarding OP rewards like beginners armour. Everyone seems to have ancient armour and those that don't engineer armour to the same quality despite the average player being level 20-25 yet they can make legendary armour... Too many shortcuts taken to make the story seem more dynamic but theres holes everywhere.

Great continuation but a bit short
Seemed very quick, met a character, had a battle, book over almost. Would have liked more per novel.

This book was disappointing
this book is average. I listened to the entire series and just wanted to comment on this one, out of all of the books in the viridian gate online series this is by far the most difficult to finish. I found the rest of the books decent though.
If your not enjoying this book series I would highly recommend "Awaken Online" or "The Land".

Loving this serise. Viridian gate online is right up there, it's thrilling, the whole serise is brilliantly written, the narration is flawless, it's well worth checking out, if you like litrpg then this serise is well with it.

Great in depth LitRPG
James Hunters Book 4 of his Viridian Gate series is well thought out with plenty of action, intrigue and surprises.
As a LitRPG author James goes to a great level of detail especially compared to a lot of upcoming bestselling series in this Genre.
What this means is that Visually its easy to go back to skill trees, stats and health, spirit bars etc. For audio then this has the same hurdle to face as lots of other LitRPG series and its managed very well with plenty of voice changes, inflections and emphasis during the battle scenes where magic and physical attacks keep you on your toes keping track of the action.
Armen Taylor does this masterfully and hats off as this is a particularly difficult book to do especially as this is the first audio i have listened to in the series.
Yes you will need to listen carefully but for those who enjoy LitRPG in detail and are more than happy to do this then this does not dissapoint. For everyone else then i think most shall struggle, i would reccomend the books and audio based on the above warning however and i will definitely be looking for more audio from this series and for other material by the narrator Armen. Buying the books also gives a good deal on the audio which i shall be taking advantage of myself.
I was gifted this audio by request and i have given my honest review and as such is based on my own opinion.

VGO is enticing
Loving this series. I understand that it’s probably aimed at a juvenile audience, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I love audible if I’m working around the house I just stick my earphones on and it’s done in the blink of an eye. Helpful.
