Versace. The very name conjures up images of outrageous glamour and bold sexuality, opulence and daring. All of course true, but only half the story. Versace is also the legacy of a great creative genius from a poor, backward part of southern Italy who transformed the fashion world through his intuitive understanding of both women and how a changing culture influenced the way they wanted to dress. House of Versace shows how Gianni Versace, with his flamboyant sister Donatella at his side, combined his virtuosic talent and extraordinary ambition to help create celebrity culture.

But before he reinvented haute couture, he was a hungry boy with holes in his shoes, a teen who daringly gambled drug dealers out of their money, and a young man in a prison cell who found nourishment in books. The Pistols shot to fame in the mid-1970s with songs such as "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen". If fashion and fashion histories appeal to you and if the history of Punk appeals to you, you'll get a kick out of this. I have learned so much I didn't know. The reading is very well done although at times confusing when you can't tell if she's quoting Vivienne or someone else.

Compelling and inspiring
Would you consider the audio edition of Vivienne Westwood to be better than the print version?
The narrator was so good, often I thought I was listening to Vivienne Westwood speaking.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Vivienne's tales of hard graft, fashion and revolution is utterly compelling.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yep. I didn't listen to the radio for a week. At the very least this is a really interesting tale, with shocks and laughs aplenty. I also found the messages in the story to be invigorating and an invitation to value my own brain and feed it with better quality information and ideas.
The only obvious down side is in an audio version there are no pictures, but the descriptions of her buffalo phase and pirates collection are quite visual anyway.
Any additional comments?
It's ace. Go for it.

Life-changing
I re-lived parts of my youth and learned how hard someone has to work to truly make a difference and to be different. As Picasso famously said - Inspiration will find you working' Vivienne is the epitome of this. She has lived, always, in the now and has never been distracted by the nonsense of the machine and it grinding sloth.
I learned so much about climate change, illegal imprisonments, the stupidity of government and why current economics is to blame for the destruction of our beautiful environments. She uses the example of a chicken to illustrate this - she makes it so simple.
This book is intelligent, insightful, funny, moving and illuminating. Vivienne is a bright star.
Thank you Vivienne. Until now, I have had only one hero in my life and now, I have two.

Needs two narrators
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was ok, but I would probably not be top of my recommendations list
Would you recommend Vivienne Westwood to your friends? Why or why not?
It gives an insight into the colourful life of a talented designer and if you are interested in fashion, then this is worth giving a go. However, as with many autobiographies, it only provides the views of its subject. Vivienne Westwood is a very headstrong woman who is so convinced that her views are the only valid one, that is can put you off.
Did Paula Wilcox do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
Paula Wilcox does a good job but as the narration switches between Westwood talking about herself in the first person and Ian Kelly talking about her in the third person, I think it would have been better served with two different narrators.
Was Vivienne Westwood worth the listening time?
It's well narrated but the content can sometimes be quite annoying.
