Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Worthy but a bit repetitive
I've been waiting for many months and was thrilled when I saw it finally show up in Audible.com. I wasn't disappointed and generally enjoyed the book but I was hoping for something less predictable. There was the usual encounters with other mages challenging Damien's abilities and authority and the subsequent near death encounters along with the political intrigue along the way but most of the characters, including Damien, seemed less interesting than in the previous books. Even the main antagonist was simple to determine very early on.
With that said, the writing was still very fluid and the narration still well recited (except for a nit with Damien sounding demanding and slightly arrogant even when he intended his declarations are meant to sound soft.)

A solid adventure and mystery
I wish audible gave us more granularity than only 5 stars. I liked Voice of Mars more than the 4 star rating I gave the prior Hand of Mars, but still don't feel like it deserves to be in the same 5 star category as my most favorite books. The ongoing mystery of who is behind the ship attacks holds together the overall story between the action better than the more uneven pacing of the prior book. The intensity is down a bit here, but is much more consistent.
The only criticism I have is that nothing truly great stands out. This is just a good enjoyable listen and well worth your credit.

Great sci-fi with a twist of magic. The book has loads of pace while it twists and turns all the way to the end. Original in so many ways but not so far out in left field as to leave the reader behind. If you are looking for a good sci-fi book that's got loads of action without being pretentious, read this and the others in the series. Great fun :)

Alright
the overriding concepts and universe for the series is good, but the mc has fell init a role of stating platitudes about his power and etc that he doesn't live upto. The thinking and actions of some char caters don't really align and as a character he is passive not proactive which can be further annoying. After book 2 i could see where the plot was going and the conspiracy which is unfailing obvious but most seem to never consider. Also slightly frustrating habit of repeating info that is well known , in the same manner as before to you prior to a simple comment being made. Still decent enough to be worth getting.
