Story
Winterbourne Hall is not safe. Even as Clare and Dorran scramble to secure the ancient building against ravenous hollow ones, they face something far worse: Clare's sister has made contact, but she's trapped, and her oxygen is running out. Hundreds of miles separate Clare from Beth. The land between them is infested with monsters, and the roads are a maze of dead ends. Clare has to choose between making a journey she knows she might not survive, or staying safe in Winterbourne and listening as her sister slowly suffocates.

Story
She's always watching.... When Guy finds the deeds to a house in his mother's attic, it seems like an incredible stroke of luck. Sure, the building hasn't been inhabited in 40 years and vines strangle the age-stained walls, but Guy is convinced he can clean it up and sell it. He'd be crazy to turn down free money. Right? The house is hours from any other habitation, and Guy can't get phone reception in the old building. He decides to camp there while he does repairs. Surely nothing too bad can happen in the space of a week. But there's a reason no one lives in Rookward House, and the dilapidated rooms aren't as empty as they seem....

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Grad student and cocktail waitress Evelyn Merkholtz has plenty to deal with. Too much to deal with, actually. So when her runaway best friend calls with a mysterious and urgent request to join her in Scotland, she is secretly more than happy to drop everything and oblige. When she gets there, Evelyn discovers that she is faced with an ancient curse, an adorably hunky villager, and a super hot (but possibly murderous) Highland warrior from the 18th century.

Publisher's Summary
Clare remembers the cold. She remembers abandoned cars and children’s toys littered across the road. She remembers dark shapes in the snow and a terror she can’t explain. And then...nothing.
When she wakes, aching and afraid in a stranger’s Gothic home, he tells her she was in an accident. He claims he saved her. Clare wants to leave, but a vicious snowstorm has blanketed the world in white, trapping them together, and there’s nothing she can do but wait.
At least the stranger seems kind...but Clare doesn’t know if she can trust him. He promised they were alone here, but she sees and hears things that convince her something else is creeping about the surrounding woods, watching. Waiting. Between the claustrophobic storm and the inescapable sense of being hunted, Clare is on edge...and increasingly certain of one thing:
Her car crash wasn't an accident. Something is waiting for her to step outside the fragile safety of the house...something monstrous, something unfeeling.
Something desperately hungry.

Predictable dialogue
After awhile I just started groaning in response to the dialogue. Half the book is him telling her to stay safe and her arguing, agreeing, and then not. It seriously got old. The other half was them arguing about not being hurt when they’re actually hurt. And in the background there are zombies. That’s the book.
The narration was really good.

A Romance Novel Disguised as a Horror Novel
The best way to describe this book is as a romance novel disguised as a horror novel. I decided to give this book a chance as it dominates (as well as Coates other novels) the horror section of Barnes and Noble and because of the relatively high reviews. Overall I was not very impressed and was very relived to be done with it.
The characters (which really there are only two of) are lifeless and dull. Clare the protagonist is bland, but is tolerable except for when she is being hysterical and talking about how much she loves Dorran. However Dorran (the love interest) was really cringey and very difficult to take seriously. He is the epitome of the handsome mysterious guy trope . He immediately falls in love with Clare upon arrival of Winterborne and is constantly talking about how important she is to him and he will do anything for her. The problem is I don't believe their love story as it just doesn't seem to develop from anything.
My next complaint is an issue I have seen not just in this book, but something reoccurring I have noticed for awhile with many books/movies/tv shows. I'm so tired of every book having a place with "Winter" in the title ever wince Winterfell from A Song of Ice and Fire/ Game of Thrones. At this point it is so overdone and everyone knows where you got the name idea from. Also, did the love interest really need to be named Dorran? It just seemed like yet another check mark next to the "mysterious guy" trope in having a weird name. All I know is that every time I heard either "Dorran" or "Winterborne" I cringed internally. I admit this maybe a personal issue, but I wanted to include it just in case anyone else noticed these trends and felt the same way.
On a positive note I did appreciate Clare not being a Mary Sue super powered wonder woman. She was quite scared in situations that most of us would be scared in and I appreciated that realistic characteristic. If you want a romance novel with a slight horror twist this may be the book for you,. However, that is not what I thought I was getting when I picked this up.

Super good!
A different take on the apocalyptic theme and it is fabulous! The narration was excellent and all the twists and turns that come together is shocking yet smooth. I got a little concerned about a possible romance (which I abhor), but the author saved me from that too. And the kicker... it's CREEPY! Almost had to put my phone in the freezer! (90s kids will understand that reference). I can't wait to listen to book #2!

If you know Darcy Coates, you know what to expect
A typical DC story with excellent narration.
I personally like Darcy Coates’s books. They all kind of follow the same cliches: determined but insecure characters battle with constant self-doubt and question their own sanity before the reality of their surroundings really dawn upon them (may that be ghosts, aliens, or insect-zombies).
These drawn out phases of suspense are then followed by some intense battle scenes, and usually there is always some sort of a positive ending to all her stories. I’d call it wholesome horror.
The narration is A+. Is it just me who can’t stand the bleak and monotonous tone of most audiobook narrators? This audiobook, however, was narrated by a captivating female voice who also did a great job changing up her voice to give each character a different tone. I was completely hooked and while normally it takes me weeks to get through an audiobook, I finished this one in days. Just excellent work from the narrator.
So, long story short, if you know DC, you know what to expect already. If you are a first timer to her writings, give it a try, and if it turns out to not be your cup of tea you can always ask for a refund. Or maybe give one of her traditional ghost stories a try. Those are also rather entertaining.

Cutie Patooties Survive the Apocolypse
Hfjsoskwbfk another BANGING novel by Darcy Coates, with another superb narrator.
I love how slow burn everything is. The horror was well foreshadowed with the mysterious opening chapter. It remained this ever-present question hanging over the story, tinting everything with dread as the two characters dealt with their issues as any normal person might. You just KNEW something worse was waiting, but not what or why.
There was also a really interesting use of making Clare doubt her own mind, too, because only The Reader can say with certainty that Clare is not hallucinating. It was, to be honest, a fair response to her claims of being stalked by walking corpses. So, seeing her question reality and her sanity, reinforced by her partner, who was genuinely concerned she was having a mental crack, only added to the terror. GUYS, STOP BEING CUTE, YOU'RE IN DANGER.
Speaking of which, the male lead was a dripping cliche of kindness, charm, honour, and chivalry, and honestly, I frikken loved it. He is adorable and I love him and I would risk my life for him, too. The narrator, by the way, has a super sexy "male voice", I'm just throwing it out there.
I feel like this is awesome fanfiction of Resident Evil meets Dragon Age monsters, and I am HERE for it. I didn't expect it, but I'm fine with it.
Anyway, I bought book two immediately.

I love Darcy Coates
I have listened to a number of Darcy Coates books. My favourites are "Craven Manor" and The "Carrow Haunt". Like another reviewer said this is not her usual ghost themed books but does not make it any less good.
It comes in a 4 book series I'm in the last part of book 3 atm and it is up there with my other 2 favourites of the author. I love the progress of the main characters as they try to make sense and adapt to the world that has changed around them.
The narrator also does an excellent job of the different characters voice and her voices gets faster at the tense parts making you sit on the edge of your seat!

Such great character development from the off, you're in there with them from page one. I'm not a reviewer who likes to give storylines away but what I will say is it's fast paced, well thought out intelligent writing that keeps you on the brink holding your breath many times.
The narration in this book is stellar. The narrator does a wonderful job of both male and female voices. adding the ring inflection. The accents are spot on and she's not overly dramatic to sell the story. Top notch.
Great listen all round really. can't fault it. XxX

Couldn't stop listening.
This book was written well and narrated superbly. The way the scene was set and the story unfolded was done with style and grace. I felt that Clare behaved as anyone would in this situation, and what I thought was going to be an end of world weather disaster was so much more, with precise detail that left me wanting more. I will definitely be listening to the rest of this series of books.

some might say implausible bur, is it?
I would say that the idea of the whole world’s pipulation or most of it anyway, would seem implausible. Yet it is the subject of a lot of novels where you get zombies and mindless changelings and they are popular. This book is just that. A domineering mother turned in to something weird, a car wreck and the story between them one the rescued and the other the rescuer. It has the usual elements of a Carcey Coates nobel including hope at the end though how that comes about is unknown. It’s not a bad read mind, I enjoyed it though this kind of book is an acquired taste.

Fantastic
From the beginning to the end of this book I was captured by the storyline so refreshing to listen to a book that has so many gut wrenching plots, I am so looking forward to the next book and how the characters will survive the next onslaught of these vile creatures. Narrator brilliant work bringing the book and characters to life.

Darcy Coates is the best Haunted Writer I've found
Darcey Coates is the most well written author in this genre, I cannot fault her impeccable writing style, imagination, creep factor and story telling. These are immensely entertaining and surprising plots. The orator Angela Dawe is one of the very best Audible readers I've come across and she brings this book to life. Do look for her other Audible reading of Darcey's books..they're a perfect match. I highly recommend them both!
