Publisher's Summary

In the apocalypse, the first weapon Adrian will have to upgrade is himself.

The end of the world as we know it couldn’t come at a worse time for him. One minute, he’s an operations manager who’s overseeing a construction job in the wilderness. The next, an unknown energy force changes the very nature of life itself, from the smallest organism to the top of the food chain.

The Earth’s surviving inhabitants, its environment, and the very laws of physics have all undergone fundamental transformations. Many of those changes aren’t pretty. Plenty of them are deadly. Luckily for Earth, this has happened to other species before, and everyone receives an interface that survivors of similar events have used to navigate through an alien landscape.

Adrian’s going to need every advantage he can get. He’s stranded in the middle of nowhere; there are days, maybe weeks of travel between him and his family. In a world full of monsters and mayhem, survival means beating the learning curve....

ugh, so melodramatic

It's not often you can say a book would be noticeably improved if you didn't have to listen to the protagonist's internal monologue, good lord.

I understand people are complex creatures, but jesus Adrian feels like he's all over the place. He also feels way too fatalistic, often getting himself into situations where he thinks he's gonna die, then just accepting it? I found it very hard to empathise. Personally in his situation, knowing more than anything he wants to be reunited with his family, I'd want to see a surge of anger and determination.

Adrian seems to have some kind of hero complex too. Understandably he wants to help those on his way to Melbourne, but he goes so far beyond the pale - often, and at needless personal risk - that I had do question how determined he actually is to be reunited with his kids.

There's also a point at the end where he finds 'thief' themed loot that's just incredible for his continued survival and purely synergistic but he whinges because... he's not a thief irl? I honestly just wanted to slap him at that point...

End of the day, a mixed bag of a story that I'd have enjoyed a hell of a lot more with a more stoic, driven and less cartoonishly idealistic protagonist.

Interesting story, but...

Enjoyable story that is difficult to get through. I do find the author over uses "idiot" and "safety first" way too much, and not even appropriately.

1. MC: Safety first.
2. Does something risky as safely as possible.
3. MC: "Idiot, that was dangerous. Safety first.
4. MC: "Need to get stronger."
And repeat to line one.

This happens way too often. Dude, reminds everyone they are in the apocalypse, but forgets this himself. Of course battling monsters is unsafe even if you do it safely as possible.

The explanation for the apocalypse isn't bad, but there is a lot of hand waving for things. Energy sources that could create power or power machines don't work. Steam engine will apparently just blow up, but boiling of water for cooking still works just fine. It just makes it so they live in a medieval fantasy in modern environment.

Bored

I'm about 4 hours in and I'm absolutely bored. I tuned out much of it simply because it didn't hold my attention. The story is boring and the narrator is monotone and stiff with his narration. Nothing about this is exciting or intriguing in any way.

I'll edit this review if my opinion changes at any point.

Narrated by Captain Kirk

I. Have to. Assume. That there. Are. An unfortunate. Amount of commas. Or. Periods. In this book.

Snooze

excruciatingly boring book with a premise that has potential. The incident happens and suddenly there's a battle and 12 chapters later you're still listening to that battle every little detail and statistic. really clumsy forceful writing. not engaging at all.

Very enjoyable read

Not sure what to say about this one honestly. It is a great start to a series and I really look forward to seeing where it goes. The characters are relatable and developing nicely. A must read if you like the game apocalypse genre.

What a terrible book

It's not sci fi, it's someone narrating a tedious role playing game. I can't actually believe how awful it is - was this written for ten year olds?

A great start

not a completely unique LitRPG story but it has its pros such as a mode realistic mc with more focus on progression rather then skipping it. The status system is explain and implemented well along with the plot.
The narrator did feel a bit off at the start but the story does help pass through it.

good solid story

enjoyed the story, particularly the pacing of the novel as opposed to most litrpgs that are in a hurry to develop a character.

audio book was good as well.

hope it gets better

this is a good book but it gets all over the place until near the end of the book. the mc is good but a little over dramatic and the other characters dont have to much substance to the to begin with but they do improve toward the end as with everything else in this book it starts off as a slow burn. the voices were ok but the didnt have much inflection to them but they do get better. over all 12/15 its ok and i hope it gets better give it a try.

Great story

Really looking forward to the next instalment. Loved the Australianism of the story. Especially appreciated the place names used.
