Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Bryan Cranston landed his first role at seven, when his father, a struggling actor and director, cast him in a United Way commercial. Soon Bryan was haunting the local movie theater, memorizing and reenacting favorite scenes with his older brother. Acting was clearly the boy's destiny - until one day his father disappeared. Suddenly destiny took a backseat to survival. Seeking something more stable, perhaps subconsciously trying to distance himself from his absent father, Cranston decided on a career in law enforcement.

Good Story; Well Told.
With my ever growing cadre of female friends and relatives who practice a more inclusive type of sexuality I appear to be destined to listen to every lesbian fiction book in the Audible library. Three of the main authors of this genre featured thus far are Melissa Brayden, Meghan O'Brien and Georgia Beers. Of these my favorite to this point is Melissa Brayden.
In this edition girl-on-girl love two actresses; one a product of pushy stage door parents; Adrienne Kinyon. The other Jenna McGovern a college graduate, veteran of summer stock theater. These two ladies have the two leading female roles in a play and a romance blossoms quickly. Well naturally the road to true love must be a long and winding one. The two have a huge disagreement and don't see each other for four years.
When they're reunited in a millennial ode to St. Elmo's fire they reconnect; but will the two of them be able to overcome their history; leaving the pain of their pasts behind? Yes of course the answer is obvious but the getting there makes for a good listen. All four of the listeners in our group gave this one five stars.

Raise the curtain and buckle in for romance...
Jenna is ready to start her professional career on the stage, and by fortune, talent, and hard work, she lands a dream role on a show that's generating some amazing noise. Her role is awesome: she plays the "sweet" best friend who is revealed to be a betraying villain, and she gets to play opposite Adrienne, a once-teen-star who is blowing the theatre world away with her singing, her dancing, and her performance. Being a part of this musical with Adrienne is everything Jenna thought she wanted out of life: her big break, and a chance to start her way up the ladder to entertainment success.
Things get a bit complicated when feelings get involved, and it turns out there's chemistry to spare between Jenna and Adrienne. As the show goes on, the feelings get deeper; is this just a theatre romance, or is this something more?
Too soon that decision has to be made, and while the show must go on, it's not without heartbreak between the two women. Worse, the entertainment world isn't a big place, and later in life they find themselves once again forced to work together, something neither of them are finding easy to do.
But sometimes the best love stories happen in the final act.
Jenna is a joy to read, another gift from Brayden, who always manages to craft characters you want to take out to lunch (and maybe slap them with some advice, to boot). The dialog in this book just zings, and the supporting cast were so solid and well-drawn that I initially wondered if this was a series where we'd get some of the other characters in later books (alas, no). The characters develop and change (this book takes place over years, which was a refreshing take, actually: so often in romance everything is very immediate), and nothing feels forced or awkward at any point. And the payoff is just sweetened for the wait.
The audio performer was solid. The right amount of emotion was portrayed, and the characters had some great vocal quirks (especially the supporting cast of strong personalities). Intentional or not, there was cadence to the performance that made the descriptions of dance quite easy to visualize, and I found myself wishing the musical described in the first quarter of the book was a real presentation I could nab a ticket to go see. Brayden's theatre background is very much clear in this book, as all the notes strike true, and that translated through the performer's voice.

An accomplished fully engaging story
Well researched story of love against odds. Instantly engaging with likeable characters given normal names.
Apart from being totally unable to imitate an English voice, this is well narrated with perfect tone that is smooth and well suited to the book. I have to admit to avoiding this author, having resigned her books to be as bad as Radclyffe, I bought it after reading the summary, then to my horror saw it was a Brayden book, berating myself for not having checked. I thought I would try it, expecting to hear unfathomable nonsense with ridiculously irritating characters having stupid names with no depth....but shocked I found myself drawn in, pleasantly surprised. This writer seems to have evolved. I couldn't stop listening, bits of humour injected, keeping it light, without detracting from the depth of characters. A thoroughly good book.

Good first novel.
I wish I'd realised this book was the first from this author. I'd judged it by the dates on audible and ended up listening to Kiss The Girl first. This story was good, but in comparison to Kiss The Girl you can tell the writing isn't quite as sharp or finessed. Still a fantastic debut, and significantly better than most other lesbian novels I've read.
I really like the length of these novels, they're reasonably substantial. I was unsure about the characters, I didn't find them as likeable. Jenna seemed very immature and Adrianne quite spoiled. It also felt like they were both sometimes unbelievably stupid or obtuse and completely oblivious to what was going on around them simply to drive the story forward. This didn't feel like an issue in the authors later novel though.
I wasn't sold on the reader. Her voice was quite raspy and it didn't really fit the characters. It pulled me out of the story a bit.
This review seems negative and so I want to end by saying that this story is an excellent lesbian rom com. If I'd read it before others from this author I'm sure I'd have been delighted so please, listen or read and then move onto to her other books and I'm sure you'll love them all!

Romance with insight into Dance and Acting
Um, well I wrote a long review. Then it said "pending approval" for 3 days then it disappeared. Censorship? or just bugs. It was a good review, but I wont retype all. From what I can remember, it basically said: great insight into the acting and dance profession which adds a lot of depth. I marked it down slightly because the conflict seemed unchallenged. What I mean is it was founded the main characters not actually speaking their minds when they needed to resolve the conflict of career verses relationship, which of course is resolvable if its important. There are a number of very atmospheric scenes and locations, and I liked the main characters. I recommend it. But would suggest looking at the author's other work first - "How sweet it is". But I have to say I think Melissa Brayden showing is she is a great lesfic author.

Probably my favourite Melissa Brayden book
At first I really wasn’t sure what I made of it being written in the first person. I’ve listened to almost all of Melissa Brayden’s books these past few months. I think however it’s been my favourite way of hearing the story. Betsy Zajko does a phenomenal job of being the character to life. I’d love to hear a follow up to their story.

Waiting in the Wings will go straight into my favorites to listen to again later. All the characters are well filled out and believable and I will miss the main characters, especially Jenna, who I feel like I know and would love to have as a friend. The back stories of theatre and film are well researched and bring added interest and believability to Melissa Brayden's well written story. Betsy Zajko does a good job differentiating the characters and conveying the mood of the story.

Nauseating
Fairy tale story. Why do authors need to write in detail lovemaking move by move. Perhaps fulfilling their own fantasy. Fast forwarded quite a bit of this drivel

Better than expected
The storyline was better than I expected. The narrator was okay, I wouldn't more different voices for the characters, but she has a nice voice.

Easy breezy lesbian romcom
I really enjoyed this. It felt like sitting down and watching the lesbian romcom I wish existed. Fabulous performance too.
