Publisher's Summary

What difference does it make that Jesus was Jewish?

In this unabridged audio download of Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, Lois Tverberg challenges listeners to follow their Rabbi more closely by reexamining his words in the light of their Jewish context. Doing so will provide a richer, deeper understanding of his ministry, compelling us to live differently, to become more Christ-like. We'll begin to understand why his first Jewish disciples abandoned everything to follow him, to live out his commands.

Our modern society, with its individualism and materialism, is very different than the tight-knit, family-oriented setting Jesus lived and taught in. What wisdom can we glean from his Eastern, biblical attitude toward life? How can knowing Jesus within this context shed light on his teachings for us today?

In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus we'll journey back in time to eavesdrop on the conversations that arose among the rabbis of Jesus' day, and consider how hearing Rabbi Jesus with the ears of a first-century disciple can bring new meaning to our faith. And we'll listen to Jewish thinkers through the ages, discovering how ideas that germinated in Jesus' time have borne fruit. Doing so will yield fresh, practical insights for following our Rabbi's teachings from a Jewish point of view.

Insight on 1st Century Rabbinical Practice

What did you love best about Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus?

Thought-provoking. Great background to understand the cultural context of the Gospels better. It was easy to follow. About half of the material was truly new to me, but every nugget that was new was priceless!

Excellent for the Jesus thirsty follower

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

With the belief that the bridegroom is coming, I am making every effort possible to know about about the groom. Ann gives us great insight on understanding the Jewish culture and how it pertains to our closed minded western view of the world. The ignorant are not ignorant because they don't desire knowledge. They are ignorant because they don't know that they don't know. Well, I have been ignorant to MANY things.
This book opened my eyes to a broader spectrum of knowledge. I will never read the bible the same again. Keep in mind, she does put her opinion in from time to time, but based on the Hebrew language and understanding of alone, helps me to better receive what I am writing. Wonderful Read!

What other book might you compare Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus to and why?

Sitting at the feet of Rabbi Jesus

Trite recollections with little scholarship

Would you try another book from Lois Tverberg and/or Pam Ward?

Tververg no, Ward maybe

What do you think your next listen will be?

A more scholarly treatment from Jewish perspective of the life of Jesus

Which scene was your favorite?

Too few to recollect; stopped listening 3/4 through book

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus?

Cut out the personal analogies (ie, praying for her cat) and stick it rabbinical interpretations of the life of this Jewish peasant

Great New Insight On Familiar Teachings

If you could sum up Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus in three words, what would they be?

Just finished chapter 9 of this book today, a chapter on praying with "chutzpah." Lois Tverberg provides some great new insights for familiar teachings of Jesus. After providing some helpful historical, linguistic and literary context information, she offers VERY relevant practical applications of these familiar passages in ways you may not have considered before. Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus has added value to my understanding of Jesus' teachings. And, the book has challenged me towards spiritual growth in important areas. I still have about six more chapters to listen to (purchased the book on Audible.com), but at this point, I am loving it!

Obsessed

Listening to this book was a true joy. Lois Tverberg's writing draws you in and educates without boring you. I've long since been a fan of Pam Ward's narration style and wasn't disappointed this time either. Pam puts just enough emotion into her reading that it feels human, but not so much that it feels like a dramatization. This was a VERY dynamic combination!

Improved my Faith

After my realization of how I was sining via reading the “Old Testament” (Torah) God brought me to a specific Bible verse, the Sabbath. I started reading my Bible and realized Torah is still very much relevant for us today and I started to keep the Sabbath (in the best of my availability and understanding of not “working”) as I read more of Torah I felt my life changing more and more and finding myself closer to God and fully embracing the roots of my Faith, which are Jewish. I couldn’t believe how we had no knowledge and some have even denied this part of our Faith and even Jesus’s identity (Lion of the Tribe of Judah! Hello!) So, Torah brought death to me, as it exposed my sins (new age witchcraft and blasphemy, stealing) it also brought me to Yeshua as my means of Salvation and life because now I fully understand what is pleasing to God and what is not. Praise God! My mind and heart is being renewed!
Before this I had not realized many of the things were Jewish customs and sayings I did not understand in the NT until I started to dig a little deeper and seek answers. This book adds to wonderful insights to things I had otherwise read by not able to comprehend the meaning mainly Jewish idioms and fascinating perspective on scripture to meditate on. Thank you so much for such a great book.

Amazing

Well written, well referenced and encouraging, Yahshua/Jesus was and is Torah observant and this book encourages us to follow, not to earn salvation but because of it. Some great notes to motivate, iv pursued torah for a few years now and this book gave me a new found zeal.

A new added layer of understanding.

The book is well written, easy to understand and concise. The narrator is very clear and enthusiastic.

There is exploration behind the words of Jesus, and his biblical teachings as they would have been perceived by a Jewish audience at the time, and how they can relate to our lives and practises today. Sounds as dry as dust but it was so interesting that I am going to listen again, this time with a Bible by my side to make the experience deeper and more immersive. I am definitely looking at the application of my faith in a new light due to the contents of this book.

Context for Jesus

Plain words to describe the Jewish perception of Jesus and what he taught. Gives great food for thought.
