Publisher's Summary

Winner of the Edward Stanford Adventure Travel Book of the Year 2016.

From the best-selling author of Walking the Nile, explorer Levison Wood begins his next challenging adventure - walking the length of the Himalayas.

Levison Wood's most challenging expedition yet begins along the Silk Road route of Afghanistan and travels through five countries. Following in the footsteps of the great explorers, Levison walks the entire length of the Himalayas in an adventure of survival and endurance.

A personal story of discovery, Levison forges strong bonds with local guides, porters, mountain men, soldiers, farmers, smugglers and shepherds. By travelling on foot, and following the same footpaths that locals use, he uncovers stories that might otherwise remain hidden. Along the way he also reveals the history of the Himalayas and two millennia of exploration, and examines a continent in crisis in the 21st century.

Packed with action and emotion, more than anything Walking the Himalayas is a story of personal adventure and striving beyond the limits of convention.

Critic Reviews

"Bestselling author of Walking the Nile Levison Wood is "bewildered" by being called a sex symbol, as a death-defying trek through the Himalayas is set to have fans' pulses racing." ( Daily Mail)
"Britain's best-loved adventurer... he looks like a man who will stare danger in the face and soak up a lot of pain without complaint." ( The Times)

Good listen

I really enjoyed this. I like the style of writing used by Wood. Enough detail but not overly technical. I also enjoyed the unbiased history of the locations. This is the second book I’ve listened to by this author and enjoyed them both. On to the next two.

Inspiring book

Levison has a grasp of language quite like no one else I have ever listened to or read. Dry English wit, a great story and a lovely pace and flow to the whole thing. Wonderfully written and the fact that Levison Wood narrated it himself made it that much better.

Walking in the foothills just below the Himalayas

With 8 years in the Indian and Nepali Himalayas spread out over 26 years myself I found this story interesting. I had spent those years at higher altitude than the author so I was interested to hear about the ground he covered. The author is a great story teller but very British. If you enjoy a well crafted tale of an interesting adventure you will find it here.

Crap

50 years ago this book would have had a captive audience. Self indulgent Indiana Jones wannabe....we’ve all travelled before so this just doesn’t keep your interest....like a backpacker on return home having a slideshow evening for his friends. Wasted purchase.

I would have preferred a professional narrator.

The author is a great writer and exploited, but I would have preferred a professional actor to have narrated the book, such as the one who read Walking the Nile, who brought life to all the different voices. Otherwise completely 5 star.

Whether you have been to the Himalaya or not, this will certainly make you want to head there. It brought back many memories for me and has me excited to venture wider and further into its raw beauty.

Lev has a great spirit

Listened to the whole thing in less than two days!

I would recommend watching the TV show before this..

The urgency in the narration needs to be more select, the mundane parts of the journey feel a bit too epic and in turn takes away from the epic events!

Defo worth it. I've bought the book, also.

Ok not as good as I was expecting.

It was ok. The silk trail book is better than this one. The problem is the book just seems very condensed and focuses in on a small number of events which feels like your doing dot to dot and bits are missing.

Completely transported

What a great adventure. I was there every step of the way. I love travel books in any case, and geographically this is right up there with Full Tilt by Dervla Murphy and A Short Walk on the Hindu Kush by Eric Newby. Wood brings in a range of literary, geographical, political and personal background to his journey and has plaited them together into an unputdownable tale. And it’s always a treat to hear the writer narrate their own words. Thank you.
