Publisher's Summary

The Emperor's vision of mankind ascendant lies in tatters. The Great Crusade is naught but a fading memory.

The dream of Unity is no more. But with Horus' rebellion spreading to every corner of the Imperium and war engulfing new worlds and systems almost daily, there are some who now ask: were the signs there to be seen all along?

In these dark times, only one thing is certain - the galaxy will never know peace again, not in this lifetime or a thousand others....

Another Anthology

At first I loved these anthologies. One anthology for nine normal books is a great ratio, and a fun way to mix it up. But starting in the mid 20s of the Horus Heresy it turned into one anthology for three books. And a ton of it feels like filler by bottom tier sci-fi authors.

One note specific to this largely lackluster collection. Chirurgeon, by Nick Kyme, is the worst of the bunch. Not because of the writing, but because Ian Brooker as Fabius Bile is the worst fucking thing I have ever heard. He does it as a stereotypical mad scientist voice, but one that is so over the top a Saturday morning cartoon would have cut it for being excessive. I've listened to dozens, if not hundreds, of hours of Horus Heresy anthologies and this was the first one I had to skip.

i hate the books of short stories

I really wish they would label these as books of short stories instead of a title like War without in so that way I do not waste a credit on a book of excerpts from other Horus heresy books.

like giving a few starving writing grad majors who failed middle school pre algebra. Basic laws of physics disregarded at a whim. people who have no idea how a gun or sights work. people blocking people Power Ranger style, enemy combatants mysteriously I'm the background but not helping.

not perfect but worth it

a good read. while some stories are almost boring i thought all of them advanced either the story or a character so as a result it gets a 4 star for that reason.

Another classic full of stories

I truly enjoy a book with a bunch of great stories in it and this is one of those books. Fills in some needed areas.

Did not care for some

I didn't care for the boring tones some of the narrator's. I also had to skip some stories because of them, and I felt it the stories didn't matter.

Filler

If you're interested storys behind a lot of the main and background characters? Then this book is for you! If you want to continue the Horus heresy plot line? Skip this one. It's hard to get invested in short stories sometimes but if that's your thing then go for it!

mixed batch

most of the stories are entertaining, some are rather dry and one is frankly irritating.

Wolf mother kicks ass.

My personal fave short story compilation in the series so far, the final story, wolf mother, has my favourite line from any book so far "she was beyond human... She was a mother"

boring boring boring

I had trouble paying attention as alot of the stories weren't very interesting, have no relevance to eachother and are very short (such that I had to keep restarting short stories when it became apparent a new one had started)

I wouldn't recommend this apart from perhaps the alpha legion harrowing short story

Decent short Stories

Some great short stories espcially near the end. Keep with it. Always great to get a story with one of Malcadors unbranded Marines especially a loyal lunar wolf.

A good anthology

Nice to listen to some stories that tie in to other books and events in the HH, good narration although Stephen Perring should stick to ciaphas cain and leave the night lords to Andrew Wincott

One of the better collections.

As said before, i am not a great fan of these shorter stories, due to them often end while you want to know so much more. This was a suprice, and the final 3 shorts are the best ones by far i have heard in any of the collections past.

Best compilation so far

Really enjoyed most of the stories, but the Fabius surgery was too much. First and only part of any Heresy book I've so far skipped.

Great. But David Annandale

As the title says. The majority of the authors and narrators were great but what prevented a 5 star was author David Annandale. Every book I have read and listened to of his has been utterly boring and miserable. It is no wonder he gets the less important and inconsequential stories of Horus Heresy. I literally role my eyes every time I see his name to a book and can pick out his writing style everytime if I don't look at the authors name. Please Dave be more exciting and take few notes from Aaron. I cling to every word Aaron's books and read some of them twice.

Listen

Definitely worth it. The separate short stories tie together the larger picture of the previous novels. Some give history. Others, plot advances. Some great stories and narrations to be found!
