Publisher's Summary
A loyal knight is on a quest to save a dynasty from itself in the thrilling sequel to Knight’s Ransom by Wall Street Journal best-selling author Jeff Wheeler.
After a pilgrimage to the East Kingdoms seeking a blessing from the Fountain, source of the land’s magic, Sir Ransom Barton returns home in search of two dreams: Claire de Murrow, the heiress he loves, and a patron for his warrior skills. Unexpectedly, Ransom finds himself in the favor of Devon, the notorious Elder King. Brought into the ruler’s mesnie and given two wards of his own, Ransom is devoted to his privileged new position. He’s also privy to the running of the realm and to all its courtly intrigues - notably, the machinations of the king’s three remaining sons, all engaged in a manipulative battle to become heir to the throne.
As Ransom is thrust into the middle of poisonous family conspiracies and betrayals, allegiances are shattered, and Ransom fears he may end up serving his worst enemy - or worse, face exile for demonstrating loyalty.
Drawing on his developing powers, Ransom takes up arms against the dark forces coming in a war that will test the limits of his courage and determine the fate of the dangerous and fractious Argentine dynasty.

slave fetish? or good doggy obeying orders?
I swear I don't understand what is so great about actively enslaving yourself to someone and wagging your tail happily at the orders of your disgusting master. Good God this mc is horrible, and even after all the wrong the kind had brought upon him he becomes overly attached to the king whom he basically barely knows. I'm not done with this book, but it's definitely one of the harder ones to finish so far with the idiocy of the mc. There is a huge difference between loyalty, and being someone's dog to do dirty deeds. Mc is a dog k a leash he set himself. Here's to hoping the second half of the book is better because atm it's looking like a real pile of shit to never be looked at.
just finished the book and I am now clear that is not my thing, hope others enjoyed it but I'm not gonna continue listening to a guy who gets a thrill out of serving as dog to a long who hasn't shown anything worthy of loyalty. honestly, none of the people he's and has shown anything worthy except the dude who helped train him

Great Book & Excellent Narration!
I love Jeff Wheeler’s books. I wish that the next books were already published! I prefer to be able to read a series of books one after another. The time between the next publication is torture!
Ransom has proven to be my favorite amongst all of the protagonist in Jeff Wheeler’s books. His life has been difficult, but he has not swayed from his duty and honor. The upcoming books are going to be quite the addition to this series and Ransom’s life I am sure.

Historical fiction
Wheeler's work is evidence that the best stories are found in history. Warrior's Ransom is a fictional telling of Richard I (Lionheart) usurping the English throne from his father Henry II - down to the names of the real historical figures and real life events. For example, Constance was the wife of Henry's son Geoffrey, Duke of Brittany, (here, Goff) and Geoffrey did die in a jousting accident, although there were rumors he was murdered. As noted elsewhere, Marshall Barton is easily identified as William Marshall, arguably England's greatest knight. I don't know that history can be plagiarized, but Wheeler has done little more than take the drama surrounding the establishment of the Angevin empire and addi a smattering of fantasy. I wouldn't be surprised if Wheeler were to write a "prequel" retelling the story of Eleanor of Aquitaine (here, Devon the Elder's wife) escaping through France to join her second husband, Henry II (Devon). Just as it occurred in history, Eleanor's first husband was Louis the Pious, Devon's wife has an earlier relationship with Wheeler's King Louis. Wheeler's work is entertaining but it feels dishonest that he presents it as an original work of fiction.
Rudd is fine as a reader, just perhaps odd that the vast majority of characters are male but voiced by a woman. l assume Rudd has a contract for Wheeler's works (she has also read his other books).

Intrigue, Treachery, and Deception
Sounds like a day on Capitol Hill. There are certain similarities, for sure. Our hero knight, Ransom finds himself in the thick of the realm's politics, as the kings continue to play games with people's lives.
Ransom is now back in the Elder King Devon's mesnie, and has sworn his fealty. Interesting, since he knows Devon well. Devon is nearly half-mad and prone to fits of fiery rage and rash decisions. His sons can't be trusted as they plot against each other and King Devon to gain control.
It seems no one understands loyalty and honor, with the exception of Ransom. He's got it nailed. Even when he doesn't like a decision, or it completely chafes against his instincts, he follows the orders of his king. But Devon's impetuous decisions are creating havoc for Ransom and the one woman he wants to marry, Claire.
If, like me, you thought the first book in this series was complex and convoluted, buckle up. This novel takes everything up a few notches. Intrigue and treasonous deceit are the norm here, and no one can be trusted. The entire land is thrown into an upheaval over the treacherous hearts and unjust plotting of a few. This is royal politics gone amuck. But it makes for an excellent read, with these very amazing characters and the plot line that speeds toward certain destruction like a runaway truck downhill with no brakes.
Start with the first book, "Knight's Ransom," then pick this one up for a truly dynamic story.

eh, pretty much book one extended
personally I think they could have cut a bit of the politics and combined the two books. that may just be me, I don't enjoy reading about that kinda thing.
also, in my opinion, the royal family is just too wishy-washy. I understand the idea but after two books full of back & forth and not much else it gets old.
not sure if I'm going to continue the series.

A roller-coaster of intrigue
The second part in the Ransom series, this book was just as enthralling as the first. The twists and turns of the plot kept me guessing, and groaning with trepidation, and rooting for Ransom.
It's a good, well paced story, and the narration really brings it to life. I'm looking forward to book 3 - Lady's Ransom.
