Listening in Chronological Order

I read the Drenai books as they were coming out before Gemmell's death, so I've been a fan for a long while.
This is the 1st time that I have experienced them in chronological order.
Gemmell wrote some of my favorite fantasy fight scenes. If you like detailed descriptions of fights, then go with his books.
Yes, his books are typically a clear cut good vs. evil story in which the protagonist is usually the toughest of the tough, yet still has doubts. Even with this in mind, I love the character of Waylander the Slayer because, when you meet him, he is the last person who you expect to be a hero. He and everyone else in this book has doubts.
Sean Barrett does a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life. I look forward to listening to his next performance.
For an added treat, stick around for the Afterward in which Gemmell explained how his original attempt at this story was no good, and it took his accidental creation of what became the title character to make it work.

I have been waiting for these books!!!!!

I have read Gemmell books for years now over and over again. I even listened to the original CD's back in the day! These are EPIC novels that are so well done and timeless. The Drenai and the Reganti books are my favorite ones. I do plan to buy all my favorite books and have a lot to look forward to. Oh, I have collected most of his books in paper back over the years so there is no worries about buying these if you love EPIC Fighting/swords/monsters/honorable stories!

Excellent story read excellently

I read this book about 20 years ago. I really enjoyed it then and many of the scenes replayed in my mind as I listened to the audio book as if though I just read them last month. The characters in the Drenai Saga are likable, even some of the unsavory ones...

A magnificently narrated classic.

I like Gemmell because he wrote his stories in a very direct no bullshit language, with simple but very memorable characters and actually interesting villains and always showing how both sides in conflict had flagrant flaws (General Karnak in looking at you).

My favourite moment in the book is when Cadoras and Waylander have their final conversation and farewell. For some reason that moment of insight into the bad guy feelings, showing his most humane side struck very much since the first time I read it, years ago, to the point that made me more fascinated with Cadoras than Waylander at that point in the book.

As a negative aspect: never fancied much the moral turn Waylander experiments, from being some kind of Mad Max in a fantasy setting to rediscover love and wish for a better life. But even as it is its very well written so yeah. The book gives some moral lessons, criticizes human nature but it never does it in an overly pretentious or righteous way as one would expect in other fantasy franchises such as some of the first Salvatore´s Drizzt stories.

The narrator, Sean Barrett has a great voice and apart of the fact that overall love this book and the story, im giving it 5 stars to performance simply because of how well he tells us the story.

More great stuff by Gemmell

If you like his other books you’ll most likely enjoy this one. The main character is heroic and independent, like a Clint Eastwood character. There’s plenty of fast-paced fight scenes. And there is a happy ending.

Masterful

David Gemmell is one of my all time favorites authors. Love, hate, good, evil, moral and immoral, its all there. On par with Sanderson and Jordan.....if not better. I read this series to my sons. They are grown but still love Mr Gemmell's stories.

Another Helping of Gorgeous Gemmell

I have pretty much gorged on three of these in the short time since Audible made them available. I think I've pretty much said all I can about them in general in my reviews of Legend and The King Beyond the Gate. In the 80s they were pure gold and even if fantasy has gained a level of sophistication since then they are still wonderful tales. Yes they have certain similarities but I think this is possibly the best of them. It's very direct and having read the above two it was fascinating to fill in some of the legends like the origin of The Thirty and how the legendary fortress of Dros Delnoch came about.

Most of all though they are just great fun. Waylander is an excellent character and there is a lot of clever action. Sean Barrett was born to read fantasy novels and he works hand in glove with Gemmell's text. In addition the afterwords written by David himself are fascinating little insights to the writing process. In this case it all sounds decidedly naive but for those of us that have grown up holding this author in real affection it's also a nice little window into the life that produced these great stories. And I might say naive but if it was then it was gloriously naive as the resulting tale of Waylander ably demonstrates . . .

amazing. It's all I need to say.

it would seem i need to say more or it won't let me say anything. Well worth buying and will be a book I'll listen to a lot. I have read all of his work and now am really happy I can listen to them at work or when walking the dog or even just sitting. It's sad that he died to soon and we will never get a new work from an author I love above all others.

Trying an earlier fantasy series, not so succesful

Because I love George Martin's Song of Ice and Fire Series and enjoyed Tad Williams' Osten Ard series, I have been trying out a little more fantasy and came across this saga on an Audible offer. This first book was quite enjoyable and kept me entertained. I could certainly see where David Gremmell may have inspired later fantasy writers with the language and imagery used.

I've now listened to the first 3 books of the Drenai series and don't think I'll read more - they are likely to be pretty similar in formula and that formula isn't good enought to tempt me to hear more - better to try something different. Amazingly sexist by the way with just about every 'heroine' featured enjoying the back of her hero lover's hand!

Terrific

Without doubt David Gemmell is an incredible author. Having read most of his books I am now enjoying them in order by listening to other narrator’s voices other than my own. Fabulous experience! This is an amazing exceptional book for anyone who enjoys fantasy. His language skills are far above most other authors and his characters so well drawn I can see them in great detail. Along with a clever plot moving always at various speeds and often in directions not expected, the reader can always be assured of a fine tale, enjoyable from beginning to end.
