Abused and thrown from her wealthy home as a child, taken in and sheltered by peace-loving Quakers, Lady Alexandra Theodora Beaumont tries to lead the religious, obedient life of her adopted parents. But despite all her efforts, Pace Nicholls brings out the willful child she'd once been.

Raised by a ruthless family, Pace must conceal his weakness for defending the less fortunate. But little Dora acts as his conscience, bringing out his worst flaws. To survive and achieve his ambitions, he must avoid her at all cost.

He didn't realize that the noble Dora could once again become the beautiful Lady Alexandra and be swept forever out of his reach…unless he offers her his hardened heart.

Should definitely come with a trigger warning

This book is set in the US during the Civil War. A hard time to write an unproblematic romance. And probably not an ideal time to be romanticizing.

But with all of the uses of the n-word, mentions of sexual assault, and thoughts about the slaves from the point of view of the “perfect” white woman protagonist, I really struggled. I usually don’t like to leave a book unfinished, but by the time we got to the hero and heroine getting together and the hero started thinking about how she was the first white woman who wasn’t a sex worker he’s been with and the implications therein, I couldn’t go any farther. The complicated relationships and inability to give consent of black woman due to fear of the time, means that he’s not much better than the men he fights against.

It was very much a white savior book and I did not want to continue to listen to it anymore.

A story based on the abuse of women

The book started with the attack of a teenage girl. Does it make it okay that the act happened pre civil war to a black slave girl by several white men. I think not. While I understand wanting to find a romance during this time period to use this account as a matter of character building was too much for me. I didn't make it beyond the first couple of chapters. In my opinion using this account only desensitizes the masses to the fact that this very act has implications for girls of color to this day and I want no part of that. Unfortunately, it also means I will not be reading anything else by this author. Unfortunately, I also have to give the narrator a low rating for agreeing to give this story a voice.

Unexpected gem

This is not a normal frivolous historical romance. It had a lot more depth and some more serious subject matter while still being really enjoyable to listen to. Such a nice surprise. Definitely recommend this book.

EHHH, NOT MY CUP...

This was hard to get into; I wasn't a fan of the narrators accents. I didn't last an hour with this book.

Another not so great narrator

I can’t say anything about the story, but I didn’t like the narrator. Sounded a bit too robotic for me.

Great story

For a civil war story, it was well done. Great character development with sad backgrounds. It was interesting to see how you pulled all the loose wires together. Well done 👍🏻.
Christine, wonderful narration. You did an outstanding job of bringing the characters to life. Kudos 👍🏻.

Very Long

The story was good but I found myself wanting to skip to the end because it felt very long.

Awesome!

A little bit of everything in this book. History, romance, suspense and sitting on the edge of your seat. I loved this story. Definitely a great book.
