Publisher's Summary

With the staggering intensity of James Lee Burke and the absorbing narrative of Jane Harper's The Dry, We Begin at the End is a powerful novel about absolute love and the lengths we will go to keep our family safe. This is a story about good and evil and how life is lived somewhere in between.

You can't save someone that doesn't want to be saved....

For some people, trouble just finds them. Thirty years ago, Vincent King became a killer.

Now, he's been released from prison and is back in his hometown of Cape Haven, California. Not everyone is pleased to see him. Like Star Radley, his ex-girlfriend and sister of the girl he killed.

Duchess Radley, Star's 13-year-old daughter, is part-carer, part-protector to her younger brother, Robin - and to her deeply troubled mother. But in trying to protect Star, Duchess inadvertently sets off a chain of events that will have tragic consequences not only for her family, but also the whole town.

Murder, revenge, retribution.

How far can we run from the past when the past seems doomed to repeat itself?

Incredible book

I cant think of the words to describe how good this book is. It is one of the greatest books i have ever read/listened to. However, the narrator is awful. His delivery is staccato and unfeeling. I almost gave up near the start because of him but im so glad I didnt.

A truly engrossing and cleverly wrought novel

I was not keen on the narrator at first but this is such an absorbing audio book that it came not to matter. I was drawn to the characters who span three generations portrayed sympathetically as just trying to survive the consequences of a devastating event. It’s a cracking fast paced well written and well structured tale that keeps surprising until the very end which is a hard thing to pull off.

Up there with the greatest

This is a true classic, the beauty of the narrative exudes from every sentence. Overwhelmingly thought provoking, sad but with beautiful dignity. I'm not good at knowing why some books are just outstanding, they just are, and this is one of them.

Awful narrator!

Terrible narrator, really spoiled it for me. I'm surprised it was allowed to be released - his tone and pacing were all wrong.

Great story ruined by the narrator

Sadly a great story is ruined by poor narration. He talks way too fast - I had to slow the speed down.
Plus where there would be obvious breaks within the chapter because the scene and characters have changed, he just barrels on through so you can’t tell if he’s still talking about the same people. Just breathe!!!
Such a shame.

Heartbreaking, but fantastic story

I loved this book once I had got into it. A bit slow at the beginning and quite confusing to start, but it grew on me and by the end I loved all the characters and the heartbreak of the story. A great book.

Magnificent

I spent 90% of this book enjoying it, but somehow not completely engrossed in the tale, feeling it just stretched to long. However the last few chapters made every moment spent reaching them worthwhile as the ending was perfect.
Quite some story.

Well written thriller with lot's of twists

Loved this book, despite often finding the narrator a bit 'whiny'. Prose was very descriptive and characters are well written.
