Publisher's Summary

In this hard-rocking, spine-tingling supernatural thriller, the washed-up guitarist of a '90s heavy metal band embarks on an epic road trip across America and deep into the web of a sinister conspiracy.

Grady Hendrix, horror writer and author of Paperbacks from Hell and My Best Friend's Exorcism, is back with his most electrifying novel yet. In the 1990s, heavy metal band Durt Wurk was poised for breakout success - but then lead singer Terry Hunt embarked on a solo career and rocketed to stardom as Koffin, leaving his fellow bandmates to rot in obscurity.

Two decades later, former guitarist Kris Pulaski works as the night manager of a Best Western - she's tired, broke, and unhappy. Everything changes when a shocking act of violence turns her life upside down, and she begins to suspect that Terry sabotaged more than just the band.

Kris hits the road, hoping to reunite with the rest of her bandmates and confront the man who ruined her life. It's a journey that will take her from the Pennsylvania rust belt to a celebrity rehab center to a music festival from hell. A furious power ballad about never giving up, even in the face of overwhelming odds, We Sold Our Souls is an epic journey into the heart of a conspiracy-crazed, pill-popping, paranoid country that seems to have lost its very soul...where only a lone girl with a guitar can save us all.

A Girl With a Guitar Never has to Apologize

One of the early scenes in We Sold Our Souls is of young Kris Pulaski first getting her guitar and playing her heart out in a basement. Black Sabbath. She's not very good, but she loves it. And at that early age, with bloodied fingers, she finds some kind of salvation. A door opens. From that moment forward, the book lives and breathes heavy metal. And a few minutes later, when we see Kris as an adult suffering through a front desk job at a hotel after having given up music, it hurts.

Things have been bad for Kris for years since the band fell apart -- one night right before they made it big. One night right before it all literally went to hell. Now, Kris is back on the road to confront their former lead singer -- the only who managed to keep on going and make it big. The only one who managed to turn himself into a brand. She wants to find out what actually happened that night, and if after all these years there's any way she can make it right by either opening another door, or closing the first one.

We Sold Our Souls is at times a rollicking road trip, a bloody hymn to heavy metal, an occasionally hilarious and often brutal horror story. Grady Hendrix has a gift of being able to ground his stories with characters who feel like friends, to make us laugh. There's another scene later on where two characters with seemingly nothing in common are stuck in a car together for hours and have to figure out what to listen to while they drive. So they scroll through options on a phone, from Bruce Springsteen to Dolly Parton, and it's hilarious and delightful and kind of exemplifies what it's like to be on a road trip. Then there are scenes where people you expected to be around this story for a while suddenly, violently aren't anymore. But all you can do is keep on going.

Carol Monda's narration is reminiscent of Kate Mulgrew's, slightly restrained but packed full of emotion and desperation. You can feel everything that Kris lost in her voice, all the things she's struggling toward. It's fantastic.

If you haven't heard any of Hendrix's books, you're in for a treat! This is full-blown horror centered around characters we never stop rooting for, even when the odds against them are damning.

I'll read anything by Grady Hendrix

What a fantastic book!! Carol Monda's performance was perfect for Chris--that slight gravel to her voice. Grady Hendrix has the ability to build a story line with perfect pacing, throwing in surprises that keep your attention riveted. There's always a tilt to the storyline that leads you into a bizarre world. I really enjoy all of his books. I listened to this one twice in a row.

I usually just rate books and dont do reviews, but this book was awesome. As a fan of horror and metal, it was right up my alley. I was quickly hooked in and loved how the story unfolded. Highly recommend this book, it kicks a**!

No depth

I kept waiting for something to happen. Anything. But nothing ever really did. The story never really got any depth to it, I never really felt like I knew the characters, it was kind of ridiculous at a few points, and the ending was such a let down. The narrator constantly gave Kris a whiny voice, which I hate for a "strong" lead character.

Pleasant surprise

This was a sold book, the horror Genre can get very tiresome at times with repetitive themes. This book is an original one-of-a-kind story in the horror genre that doesn’t forget to have a great ending and page turning pace.

Face meltingly good 🤘🏻🤘🏻

In the past week I have devoured two of Grady Hendrix’s books via audible, We Sold Our Souls and My Best Friend’s Exorcism. Both books have been captivating, I think in large part do to the expert voice casting for the narrator of each book. Grady plays with his words and imagery like an experienced guitar player plays and glides across a fret board, effortlessly and powerfully moving the story forward like the bullet that he equates he characters to. All that combined with the gritty raspy voice and versatile performance of Carol Monda this is a rock and roll roller coaster of a book that had me possessed from beginning to end!!

Fun and exciting.

I loved this book. It moved fast and had a fun story. If you're looking for something a little supernatural but not too scary this will do it. The narrator did a great job, although her men's voices were all about the same. #ontheroad #suspenseful #Tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Grady Hendrix & Carol Monda=Audible Perfection

I loved this book. Right from the beginning the story grabbed me. I enjoy a story that teaches me a few tidbits about a world I don't know about firsthand. This was a great tale of Metal Bands and Evil and all the suspense I could handle. Very well written and the narrator could not have been more perfect. This is my first book by Grady Hendrix, I admit that the cover lured me in. I'm not ready to dismiss some supernatural work was used (or perhaps just a talented book cover artist)

Superb

I'm a big fan of Grady Hendrix's work, and this is hands down his best work to date. Hugely entertaining, brilliantly written and scary in all the right places. a love letter to both metal and horror but also with a lot of heart. Carol Monday does a sterling job of narrating this tale that will stick with you long after you've read it, and will also make you think twice before you sign anything again. 😉

Disappointed

I've enjoyed two other Grady Hendrix books. But this was tedious. I didn't care for any of the characters. Had no clue what the book was even about on finishing. Bizarre!

A good narrator makes all the difference.

From coming off the back of Hendrix’s ‘Final Girl Support Group’ which left a very displeasing taste in my month, I was apprehensive to start this one. But it goes to show a good narrator makes all the difference.

I loved the mental/rock n roll theme, the perspective for the female character being the only woman in a mental band and other issues this book raised. It was refreshing and kept me hooked all the way through. I will definitely listen again.

Surprisingly Entertaining

I have to admit that I thought the story sounded just a little naff but ... sometimes books can surprise you so I thought I'd give it a go.

Turns out that this is actually not a bad story. Lots of betrayal, a bit of horror and mystery, well narrated and keeps you guessing. Good for a long drive or a rainy afternoon. Give it a try.

loved other Grady Hendrix and love metal but ..

this didn't work for me, some good bits and a fun undertone and mentions of bands but I didn't care about anything going on and didn't buy into any of the characters. preferred my best friends exorcism (my fave) and the southern guide :) they were great, will read the final girl support group as they chose a narrator for that I cannot abide!

a lot of heavy metal, little horror

I've always wanted to read books from this author as reviews say how scary some of the stories are but I don't think they are. I love heavy metal and loved all the references but wanted a little more scare. The story was good and different from anything I've read before. For me it just lacked the scare factor but maybe I'm looking at the wrong books for that

Could not stop listening to this audiobook, it was so well done. Hendrix is a genius. I'll be buying this book in real life as well, it's that great.
