Publisher's Summary

A dazzling full-length collection of verse from one of the leading spoken word poets of our time.

Over the past two decades, Jessica Care Moore has become a cultural force as a poet, performer, publisher, activist, and critic. Reflecting her transcendent electric voice, this searing poetry collection is filled with moving, original stanzas that speak to both Black women’s creative and intellectual power, and express the pain, sadness, and anger of those who suffer constant scrutiny because of their gender and race. Fierce and passionate, Jessica Care Moore argues that Black women spend their lives building a physical and emotional shelter to protect themselves from misogyny, criminalization, hatred, stereotypes, sexual assault, objectification, patriarchy, and death threats.

We Want Our Bodies Back is an exploration - and defiant stance against - these many attacks.

Just beautiful.

Just beautiful. Just Always. If my body had another body it would be this author, for she is truly, “like the singing coming off the drums.”

Eye Opening

Thank you for reopening my eyes to the travesty of suffrage to the lack of care done by others to the bodies and minds of our people of color. I’d forgotten/put away the painful memories of the many brothers and sisters lost by way of murder from a sick and mixed up society of folks who cannot/will not move forward, but indeed are stuck in the past in their own body and mind that we are not human.
Thank you sister Jessica Care Moore for poetically reminding me to say their name....forever. And thank you to Karen Hunter of Sirius XM for recommending your book as a must read. It was definitely a must read. So I shall pass the word on.

Sincerely,
ME

We Want Our Bodies Back is exceptional

Jessica Care Moore is a wonderful writer and performer. I thought that her work had depth and I wish more people would take the time to listen to her. With that being said, I think there was a lot of repetition of theme and language to the point where I really got tired of hearing one specific poet’s name over and over.

The write stuff

jessica Care moore reps and respects letters. Letters that form words that manifest into poems, that change perspectives, move minds. Letters that when put together create this: "You may want to reconsider only praying to your father for mankind/God/Considering the vulnerable state of humanity, you may want to call your momma."

'We Want Our Bodies Back' travels through themes of identity, power, politics, love, sex, ownership, and relationship with the same vibrant spirit that has become synonymous with this renaissance woman. Blunt, sharp, well-written and read. Talk less, hear moore.
