Publisher's Summary

I remember the lights.

I remember I wanted to photograph them, the way the red and blue splashed across his cold, emotionless face. But I knew even if my feet could move from the place where they had cemented themselves to the ground and I could run for my camera, I wouldn't be able to capture that moment.

I had trusted him, I had loved him, and even though my body had changed that summer, he'd made sure to help me hold on to who I was inside, regardless of how the exterior altered.

But then everything changed.

He stole my innocence. He scarred my heart. He took everything I thought I knew about my life and fast-pitched it out the window, shattering the glass that held my world together in the process.

I remember the lights.

The passionate, desperate, hot strikes of red. The harsh, cruel, icy bolts of blue.

They symbolized everything I endured that summer.

And everything I would never face again.

This is almost like 2 books in one. The first half is about a girl with serious self-esteem issues and how she is learning to make the changes she needs to become a stronger women. Then BAM the 2nd half is suspense/mystery kind of. That being said I loved the 1st story line so much! I could feel exactly what she was feeling and I cheering her on. But the rest of the story was a little obvious for me, sort of saw that coming from a million miles away. The love story was perfect, Rhodes was perfect, he was the only one in her life who loved her the way she was and wanted her to be happy with herself. I did very much enjoy this story and couldn't stop listening.

A touching story

I have no doubt this story has touched many who have read it. The story line is intriguing, keeps the readers attention, and tugs at the heart strings. It's full of great characters: the witty best friend, the ex-boyfriend who is no longer a reflection of who Natalie once knew, the mother who expects everything to be just right for appearances, and two main characters that make this book sizzle.

He's dark and brooding with the weight of his past holding him down. She's the light, a free spirit, untouched by the perils of life.

"Sometimes, the darkness is where you find yourself."

Just the amount of insightful and touching quotes one can take away from this story is worth the read alone.

Now, only two things bothered me about this story/performance. From a narration, it grated my nerves regarding the pronunciation of Appalachian. For those who live near the Appalachians, without a doubt, they would say Appa-LATCH-uh. If you say Appa-LAY-shuh you are not only identifying the mountain range but you are also announcing to all that you are not from there. You can say a lot in just one word. So that just didn't match with the character profile. From a writing stance, the author kept elongating Appalachian State when mentioning it, but those who talk about it often, the characters would be calling it App State instead. So small things, but annoying.

Wow, this book took me by surprise!

I really loved this book! The main character is dealing with the heartbreak of her high school sweetheart breaking up with her the summer after high school. She has to figure out what to do with her life, and discover who she really is.

nasal narrator

this female needs to not narrate, ever. if you want to listen to her speak through her nose and her poor reading is terrible. don't bother, folks.

I won’t by another book from this author.

This was very predictable and childish. The sex scenes were far too intense for a high school girl and an adult male, this book screamed “it’s okay for adult men to have sex with vulnerable teenage girls”; then at the end when the step lead was wreaking havoc on other vulnerable teenager girls it was not okay. I will not buy another book from this author.

A good, interesting story

It’s a very good story, keeps your attention from start to finish. For those who say it is like 2 books in 1, I would disagree. There are hints peppered all throughout the story leading up to the big event. I saw it coming from very early on. All in all, this was a very enjoyable book and I would recommend it.

Great Small Town Romance Filled with Growth

"You’re weightless. The world hasn’t touched you yet. You’re not heavy with the weight of pain, and guilt, and selfishness."

Review: This was my first book by Kandi and it definitely won't be my last. This one spoke to me on a completely different level and I loved it. This book is done from single POV, which I am normally not a fan of. Kandi did such an incredible job that she made me forget completely.

Natalie is coming off a break up from her boyfriend of 2 years. After seeing his new girlfriend is the opposite of her, she is struggling with her self confidence. She decides to change in order to win him back.

Rhodes is moody and mysterious. He is the personal trainer at the country club. He loves to prepare meals to feed his hard earned physique.

When Natalie's mom suggests she work with a personal trainer at the country club, she reluctantly says yes. When she walks in to discover Rhodes, the mysterious bad boy from High School. He was a Senior when she was a Freshman. The two become friends and Rhodes helps Natalie change her lifestyle so she feels good in her own skin. Rhodes sees how unique and beautiful Natalie is, and is determined to help her believe it herself. There is so much more to Rhodes as Natalie quickly learns and tries to help break down his walls. Their chemistry, helping each other find themselves again and become stronger. There are a few twists I did not see coming which made this book even more enticing. I didn't want to stop the ride it took me on. I listened to the audiobook which was done by Marie Mitchell. She is new to me, but it was done very well and her voice was perfect for Natalie. I could relate to Natalie, between her love of photography, of finding beauty in the world, to her struggle with loving and finding beauty in herself. This book was magnificent!⁣

Thank you @valentine_pr_ for the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

So much emotion!!!!

5 stars!!! This book hit me in the feels so darn hard! I absolutely loved the message that Kandi Steiner was trying to get across with Natalie and her body image issues. I fell madly in love with Rhodes and his unsuspecting charm and dedication. The pair were electric and left me feeling dizzy and smiling! The dramatic twists and suspense left me feeling anxious and worried. I loved it and hated it. I couldn't put this book down and never wanted it to end, all at the same time. This is one of those books that changes you. It takes a piece of you when you set it back on the shelf. I'll forever be changed after reading this novel. It spoke to me on such a personal level and I'm so thankful to Kandi for writing such a profound character like Natalie and speaking the truth about women and their bodies, especially women who are not picture perfect and have more to grab onto.

Marie Mitchell did a great job bringing Natalie and Rhodes to our ears. I enjoyed her narration and thought the book was wonderfully done on audio. My only issue was that there were extremely long pauses between chapters that made me worry the book had stopped.

Disappointing story development

This started off with promise and I can say that the writing was inviting and engaging. What led to my clear dislike of the book were the weak main characters with a propensity to repeatedly flip-flop emotionally and the lack of depth to the storyline. I can say I disliked the hero Rhodes, he messed the heroine, Natalie around ridiculously. She was a sap, she started her weight loss journey because of a boy and orientated her life and self around her next relationship.

There were unbelievable turns in the story especially (view spoiler)

My heart sunk when I got past midway in this audio, the story deteriorated, the characters lost my engagement. I can’t recommend this book and I’m sad about my experience because I’ve heard a lot of good about this author. Maybe I chose the wrong book, maybe I’ll try again with another book at some point.

The narration was strong throughout and that helped me to finish the audiobook.

Life is weight

Wow.... Emotions! This book had me on the edge of my seat! Such a rollercoaster of emotions you experience with the characters! After the tough life Rhodes (William) went through I'm glad he finally got the respect he deserved as well as his happy ending!
