Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable. And yet that's exactly what she does.

Story
It's 1910, and Daniel Pitt is a reluctant lawyer who would prefer to follow in the footsteps of his detective father. When the biographer Russell Graves, who Daniel is helping defend, is sentenced to execution for the murder of his wife, Daniel's Pitt-family investigative instincts kick in, and he sets out to find the real killer. With only 21 days before Graves is to be executed, Daniel learns that Graves is writing a biography of Victor Narraway, the former head of Special Branch and a close friend of the Pitts. And the stories don't shed a positive light. Is it possible someone is framing Graves to keep him from writing the biography-maybe even someone Daniel knows in Special Branch? The only answer, it seems, lies in the dead woman's corpse.

Any additional comments?
Hero is waaaay more interesting and waaay less of a cliche. So - move on from Kat. She's a bore - and we don't really need to hear any more about her. The depiction of London in the early 19th century is fab. Really interesting time, really well done. Great narration.

Love this series!
Would you listen to What Darkness Brings again? Why?
Yes. I'll let sometime go by before listening to it again. It is well written and the performance is good.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Just as the previous books in the series, this plot kept my interest to the end.
Which scene was your favorite?
When the bad guys are found out. I won't specify by giving away details.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I enjoy the interaction between Sebastian and Hero.
Any additional comments?
I believe the author is making the main characters more mature and likable as the series continues. I look forward to the next one. I hope it will soon have the WS4VR feature.

Wonderful historical mystery.....super series
What made the experience of listening to What Darkness Brings the most enjoyable?
Historical mysteries are my favorite genre to begin with, and this series reminds me of Anne Perry's many novels.
What did you like best about this story?
It is a series that needs to be listened to in order of being written. Since I must wait until next spring for the latest book in the "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon, this could give me the "fix" I need to endure the wait.
What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
With Davina Porter narrating, it brings the best there is to capturing the essence of a British mystery.
Any additional comments?
Audible only has 3 of the novels and not in order.....Please read at least one of the three to enjoy and get "hooked" on Sebastian Sr Cyr, and maybe, the editors at Audible.com will check the series and add the missing books. I have resorted to buying the written version, and I really miss Davina Porter's wonderful narration.

One of my Favorite Series
Sebastian St Cyr is one of my favorite detectives in a series. The series is set in Regency England and the period detail is excellent. The particular mystery here is the murder of a man who loaned money to the wealthy in exchange for holding some of their precious paintings and jewels -- a Regency Loan Shark to the Genty. Lot so twists and turns.
Since many of the characters reappear in all the novels in the series - I would recommend starting with the first book in the series. While not on Audible it is available on the Kindle. So start with the first book - they are not long read and are lots of fun.
As always Davina Porter supplies a superb narration.
