The story of how The Godfather was made is as dramatic, operatic, and entertaining as the film itself. Over the years, many versions of various aspects of the movie’s fiery creation have been told - sometimes conflicting, but always compelling. Mark Seal sifts through the evidence, has extensive new conversations with director Francis Ford Coppola and several heretofore silent sources, and complements them with colorful interviews with key players including actors Al Pacino, James Caan, Talia Shire, and others.

In his follow-up to the acclaimed Hellraisers, Sellers traces the intertwining lives and careers of four outrageous Hollywood movie mavericks. They’re the baddest bad-asses Hollywood as ever seen: Marlon Brando, Dennis Hopper, Warren Beatty, and Jack Nicholson. They are men to whom rules did not apply; normal standards of behavior were simply too wearisome to worry about.

Most people know Andrew McCarthy from his movie roles in Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo's Fire, Weekend at Bernie's, and Less Than Zero, and as a charter member of Hollywood's Brat Pack. That iconic group of ingenues and heartthrobs has come to represent both a genre of film and an era of pop culture. In his memoir, McCarthy focuses his gaze on that singular moment in time. The result is a revealing look at coming of age in a maelstrom, reckoning with conflicted ambition, innocence, addiction, and masculinity.

Keaton’s deadpan stare in a porkpie hat was as recognizable as Charlie Chaplin’s tramp and Harold Lloyd’s straw boater and spectacles, and, with W. C. His iconic look and acrobatic brilliance obscured the fact that behind the camera Keaton was one of our most gifted filmmakers.

As this book's title suggests, Norm Macdonald tells the story of his life - more or less - from his origins on a farm in the-back-of-beyond Canada and an epically disastrous appearance on Star Search to his account of auditioning for Lorne Michaels and his memorable run as the anchor of Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live - until he was fired because a corporate executive didn't think he was funny. But Based on a True Story is much more than a memoir; it's the hilarious, inspired epic of Norm's life.

Since 1929, Hollywood’s brightest stars have flocked to the Chateau Marmont as if it were a second home. An apartment building-turned-hotel, the Chateau has been the backdrop for generations of gossip and folklore: where director Nicholas Ray slept with his 16-year-old Rebel Without a Cause star Natalie Wood; Jim Morrison swung from the balconies; John Belushi suffered a fatal overdose; and Lindsay Lohan got the boot after racking up nearly $50,000 in charges in less than two months. Much of what has happened inside the Chateau’s walls has eluded the public eye - until now.

From 1965 to 1995, the Grateful Dead flourished as one of the most beloved, unusual, and accomplished musical entities to ever grace American culture. The creative synchronicity among Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan exploded out of the early 60s roots and folk scene, providing the soundtrack for the Dionysian revels of the counterculture. Dennis McNally, the band's historian and publicist for more than 20 years, takes listeners back through the Dead's history.

Publisher's Summary
Oliver Reed may not have been Britain's biggest film star - for a period in the early 70s he came within a hairsbreadth of replacing Sean Connery as James Bond - but he is an august member of that small band of people, like George Best and Eric Morecambe, who transcended their chosen medium, became too big for it even, and grew into cultural icons.
For the first time Reed's close family has agreed to collaborate on a project about the man himself. The result is a fascinating new insight into a man seen by many as merely a brawling, boozing hellraiser. And yet he was so much more than this. For behind that image, which all too often he played up to in public, was a vastly complex individual, a man of deep passions and loyalty but also deep-rooted vulnerability and insecurities. Why was a proud, patriotic, intelligent, successful and erudite man so obsessed about proving himself to others, time and time again? Although the Reed myth is of Homeric proportions, he remains a national treasure and somewhat peculiar icon.

Ollie!
Any additional comments?
I read about half of this book when first released. Purchased the audio version so I could listen while on the move. This is Oliver Reed's life, passions, work, family, friends, houses, cars, pubs, rough games and hard drinking. This isn't a sentimental journey nor a bitter one either. I have never been a huge Oliver Reed fan, but I am a fan of some of his films. Women In Love, Burnt Offerings and Gladiator. I'm a fan of well written and well researched biographies. I can see why England LOVES this man. Oliver was so in love with his country and countrymen. He died too young. His career was on a come back and he still had so much to give. RIP Ollie.

What was one of the most memorable moments of What Fresh Lunacy Is This??
All of it!
What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Gives very amusing distinguishable impressions of each person, which bring real life to the incredible stories.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both....Oliver Reed's life was clearly a roller coaster from start to finish.
Any additional comments?
Reed's antics are truly unbelievable, an absolute must read and the narration is just brilliant...One of the best biographies I've ever read/heard....I strongly advise getting this book....it made my monotonous tube rides rip roaringly funny and the the time flew by!

Such sad sweet fun
What did you like most about What Fresh Lunacy Is This??
A wonderfully read account of the life and times of the late great Mr Reed - the pace and depth of insight and speculation about his motives (and others) hits the right balance. To hear his exploits is heartening, amazing and sometimes very moving...by the time the story of his death is played out, tears were in my eyes.
What other book might you compare What Fresh Lunacy Is This? to, and why?
Red Carpets and other Banana Skins - Rupert Everett
What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
A lovely gift for voices and sccents
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Very moving - sometimes shocked by his behavior, sometimes amazed and in the end it felt like somebdy I knew had been taken too soon.
Any additional comments?
Better than other available biographies.

A Talent Wasted
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I love biographies and autobiographies but found this one of my least favourites, so wished I'd tried someone else, as I found myself disliking Mr Reed.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Didn't quite get to the very end, gave up.
Which character – as performed by Sean Barrett – was your favourite?
Didn't have one.
Was What Fresh Lunacy Is This? worth the listening time?
No, it annoyed me, not because it wasn't accurate I'm sure it was, I found Oliver Reed to be an overgrown school boy to whom life gave everything while he squandered it.

Tedious in the extreme.
An endless tale of p***-ups and questionable behaviour under the influence.
The author seems half in love with his subject, so expect very little objectivity here. The romantic view of the misunderstood hell raiser with a heart of gold is alive and well in this book.
You come away feeling like you've been stuck in a corner with the pub bore, reliving the antics he'd witnessed over the years... exhausted and glad it's over.
