Publisher's Summary

Hillsborough, North Carolina is a town with a dark history, one that was hidden until investigative journalist Laura Chambers pulled it into the light.

Nearly a year has passed since her deadly encounter with a serial killer’s twisted progeny, a brutal confrontation that left her physically and emotionally scarred. She’s ready to put the past behind her, but the past has other plans. A woman runs onto the interstate, directly into the path of a truck, and the gruesome accident leaves behind a mangled corpse. Her very last phone call was to Laura, but the victim was barefoot, in a state of undress, and her face is disfigured beyond recognition. Identification seems impossible, and the only thing in her possession is an old photograph depicting Laura, her father—and standing next to them—her imaginary friend from childhood. What else is mistaken about her memories?

Laura’s father passed away when she was eight, and she thought she understood why he vanished from her life the year before he died, but the photograph casts doubt on everything she thought she knew. Soon Laura is digging into the history of the deceased, and her own family, determined to discover what lies beneath...

Nail Biter

I love this series. I read/ listened to the first book in a day and couldn't wait for the second book's release. The book brought back familiar characters from the first and had a similar story arch. I was not expecting the ending, which is the sign of a great writer. The second story is more personal than the first. If you liked the first book, you will likely enjoy the second book.

Just as good and gripping as the first novel

Highly recommended. I really like the characters and most return here. The narrator did a great job again. Hope to see another in this series. I have a lot more to say about this book but it would all require spoilers so I just leave it as if you liked the first book you'll like this one too. If you haven't read the first one you need to before reading this one.

Big secrets in a small town

This can be read as a stand alone book, but is better to read the first in the series before this one. That gives you more back story on some of the characters in this book. Once again Laura is thrown into a battle to solve a mysterious death of a young woman. The woman was tragically killed in a truck versus pedestrian accident. Moments before she was killed, she called Laura's phone 4 times. The last call was a voicemail with no voices, just some breathing and background noise. Naturally the town's police department is convinced Laura knew the victim and wants to know why she called Laura. While investigating the death and identity of "Jane Doe", Laura stumbles into big secrets and coverups by her family, neighbor and more. The people behind the secrets don't want the information known and will stop at nothing, including murder, to keep those secrets buried. Will Laura survive and find out what really happened all those years ago? How will it effect her identity and memories from years gone past? Good story with lots of twists.

Excellent!

Just when you think it’s the run of the mill mystery that you’ve already figured out….definitely did not end as I had thought.

Awesome!

Great book. Twists and turns right up to the end. What an imagination the author has.
