The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Publisher's Summary
“A brilliant, breathless thriller that kept me guessing to the last shocking page.” - Erin Kelly, Sunday Times bestselling author of He Said/She Said
An Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestseller.
It was supposed to be the perfect reunion: six university friends together again after twenty years. Host Ali finally has the life she always wanted, a career she can be proud of and a wonderful family with her college boyfriend, now husband. But that night her best friend makes an accusation so shocking that nothing will ever be the same again.
When Karen staggers in from the garden, bleeding and traumatised, she claims that she has been assaulted - by Ali’s husband, Mike. Ali must make a split-second decision: who should she believe? Her horrified husband, or her best friend? With Mike offering a very different version of events, Ali knows one of them is lying - but which? And why?
When the ensuing chaos forces her to re-examine the golden era the group shared at university, Ali realises there are darker memories too. Memories that have lain dormant for decades. Memories someone would kill to protect.
Critic Reviews
“Hitting the rare sweet spot between a satisfying read and a real page turner, this brilliantly written book deserves to fly high.” (Cass Green, best-selling author of In a Cottage In a Wood)

Insipid characters - awful story telling
I'm not sure where to start with this one. I feel like I should get a few start for being able to finish it. The protagonist is one of the most unlikable characters I've ever read about in a book. That in and of itself is not the problem - the problem is that I don't think it was the author's intent. As her family and best friend go through the unthinkable, she worries about her beautiful home and her beautiful things, and that's just a start.
The author wants us to believe that Ali is a feminist. In fact she works as an advocate for a rape center. Yet, she says things like, "I imagine rape might be a common place thing for this court, while in the previous breath stating that she had been in that same court many times advocating for victims. We also learn that she has no knowledge of family finances...she just spends as it comes in. Did I mention how absolutely helpless, and lacking common sense she is as well? For an Oxford educated woman, she is written as lacking simple intelligence. I also think the author should look up the definition of feminist.
The story is predictable, convoluted, and written without the skill of having had the decency to offer a red herring. The performance was just ok - I didn't expect it to be stellar with the awful writing. Found this on the Amazon best seller list.

Great book!
Great book! I could probably identify more with Ali since it wasn't long ago that I found out my husband of 7 years had been seeing my friend for at least two of those years. I know how I felt when my world fell apart.
If I'm going to like a book or not depends on my own experiences in life. I recently read a book I first read 30 years ago. This time I didn't like the book at all.
Ali is living with her family in England so I don't understand people complaining about the English accent of the woman reading the book!

England's Desperate Housewives & Husband's
You and your husband plan a party in your home for your best college buddies 25 years later, and no one could have prepared you for what comes next, or what is revealed. I thought the book was okay for what it was. I was hoping for a better kindle first choice. The premise of the book sounded really interesting as described. I know plenty of people will love this book but for me it was just okay. I didn’t real like any of the characters. The narrator's heavy English accent I found to be quite distracting. The writing is not too bad but this is not a psychological thriller. It's a boring soap opera with the usual lies, betrayals, cheating, drinking until passed out, annoying children, rape, and a 25 year old murder. By process of elimination I guessed the rapist and murderer halfway through the book. I wouldn't recommend this book.

Not a thriller, just irritating
The internal dialogue of the protagonist was irritating and hard to bear most of the time. The story started out interesting and the only way I got through all of the self-doubt and indecisiveness of Ali is that I truly wanted to find out whodunit. Unfortunately, the story gets tied up in a neat little bow in the final chapters, with a very bad attempt at "the twist". Oh yeah, and let's throw in another "twist" in the epilogue. And finally, the "message" that this book tried hard to ride the plot on was completely lost on me. The power, money, and privilege, or lack thereof, depending on the character really added nothing to the storyline. Pass this one by, unless this is the only book available and you already read the dosage directions on your prescription bottle.

Just OK
Not a bad story but also not great. I enjoyed the narrators, but sometimes the internal dialogue of protaganist was annoying and just useless, wanted to shake her. Parts were predictable but a few unexpected twists and shocks. Not sure if I would recommend this, I got it when it was on sale.

Disappointed as had a very intriguing premise
It sounded great ... but then the choice of main voice over Pearl Hewitt, for me spoiled the story as I thought she seemed far too old and staid for the character she was portraying. The result was all I could picture was the group of friends who seemed interesting and vibrant and then a much older, stodgy and dull main character.
Then the plot .... hmm ,
I loved the set up of old palls coming together for a house party but for me it just fell apart and though the teasers for a possible past unpunished crime related to the death of a beautiful, brilliant girl who they all went to university with was intriguing, I was just put off by the way the main plot seemed to be falling to pieces and the unappealing and miscast narrator just made me give up so I am returning.
Sad as I feel it could have been great if main story was a bit less predictable plotted - I just thought the first twist after the attack was so cliched and was afraid the rest might be a similar letdown - and if there had been an engaging narrator who sounded more age appropriate and as if she fitted in with the description of the other friends it could have been great.
However with so many great tightly woven and cleverly suspenseful thrillers out there I just decided to not waste any more time on this one which I was not enjoying listening to and felt would never deliver the promise of its summary.

Disappointed
I was looking forward to this, and wanted to like it - but just couldn’t. Unpleasant characters - the worst, self-absorbed, status-obsessed kind of Oxbridge characters (we aren’t all like that) - plus no humour or other narrative interest to distract from the remarkably stupid, selfish characters. I really wonder why I listened to the end. I feel cheated of a credit.

Couldn't get along with the narrator
I purchased this audiobook and got a few chapters in before I also discovered it on Kindle Unlimited. I ended up reading most of it instead of listening because I just found the narration so grating - it brought a completely different inflection to the story than the one I had in my head when reading. I think it's a personal taste matter, but I truly could not get along with the narration at all it just completely took me out of the story. I read it in a couple of days, and certainly enjoyed it. I ended up checking out another couple of Claire McGowan titles on KU and have enjoyed reading them too, so I would recommend as a lazy afternoon read - but if you have Kindle Unlimited just read it there, the narration adds nothing (actually imo subtracts) from the experience and there are better audiobooks to spend your credits on :).

I can’t listen to the narrator
I thought this sounded like it would be good but I can’t bear to listen to the main narrators voice anymore.

Disappointing read by one of my favourite authors
I pre-ordered this book - waited months for it to become available. I so loved the Paula Maguire series, so had looked forward to a new book by this author. I enjoyed the little twist at the end but we would have all been looking for an ending that was not obvious. There seemed to be a lot of unnecessary repeated phrases. I will not give up on Claire McGowan just yet. Perhaps my expectations were just too high.
