Publisher's Summary

Lady Lucinda Bowery has decided to cast off mourning attire and begin moving on from the loss of her husband. Hiring the gentleman courtesan known as an experienced dominant seems like just the thing to propel her out of bereavement and back to life. She intends for him to give her pleasure and, perhaps, help her find a bit of the woman she was before being widowed.

Aubrey Drake became a courtesan to help bolster his expanding business as well as provide a trousseau and dowry for his ward. Over time, he has grown bored catering to women who only see him as an exotic offering to be enjoyed temporarily and then discarded. Thus, the thrill of mastering a submissive bedmate has lost its luster, leaving him cold.

When Lady Bowery is suggested as his new keeper, he expects to be as apathetic toward her as all the others. But, when sparks fly at their first meeting, Aubrey becomes determined to master Lucinda in every way possible, even though she seems intent on keeping him at arm’s length.

As she finds comfort and pleasure with her new courtesan, Lucinda finds it increasingly difficult to deny that what she feels for him goes beyond simple lust. Yet, embracing the possibility of a future with him means letting go of her past. Aubrey is determined to win Lucinda’s heart, but she still clings to the memory of her first husband.

Can Lucinda come to return Aubrey’s love before it’s too late?

Again, five stars for Darcy Stark & a great story

I managed to get one hour into this audio book and realized it just kept getting better. The story was off the charts to begin with, and yes, I read the ebook before listening. Believe me reading it first didn't influence this review in any way. The story was compelling, sexy, erotic, frustratingly romantic, and ... well you get the idea. But now, Victoria Vale comes out with an audio book. Holy Canoli ! I have no idea what this author is trying to do to me. Between the sexy voice of the narrator and a wonderfully written erotic romance, I'm totally over the moon about this audio book.

I have an entire library of audio books ranging from non fiction to biography to romance to erotica and back again. I can honestly say that Darcy Stark is an amazing voice for Vale's stories. Just Amazing!

If you get a chance to pick this audio book up, do so. If you are loving the Regency era, love steamy, erotic romance, you will not be disappointed in these characters - Aubrey and Lucinda are made for each other, but it takes the entire book for Dominant Aubrey to convince Submissive Lucinda to see it his way. I loved them both and wanted to throw the book across the room numerous times when Aubrey was in danger of having his heart broken. Sigh...I love it when a good story, a great narrator, and spicy romance all come together! Do Not Hesitate to buy this audio book. You will love it!

A Courtesan wants Darcy Stark narrating his story

Victoria Vale and Darcy Stark have done it again with What A Courtesan Wants - Book 2 of the Gentleman Courtesans Series.

I read the ebook when it came out in 2019 and I loved it! Victoria's way with words, her ability to draw a reader right into the story continues with the audio book version. That's because Darcy Stark's narration takes this story beyond the imagination and allows you to be there right inside the story.

When Aubrey first meets Lucinda, you feel like your sitting there beside them. Stark's ability to give each character a distinctive voice makes you think there has to be more than one person doing the narration, but no it's not, just the one!

As easy as it was to read the book it was even more so to listen to it. As a listener I found that I became a part of the story. You get wrapped up with Aubrey Drake and his character. Aubrey is a merchant, owner of Rowland-Drake Haberdashery but also currently the only Courtesan who is a BDSM Master. His new "keeper" is Lady Lucinda Bowery, Dowager Countess of Lanhope a submissive, who has been in mourning for her late husband.

Their relationship starts off purely as that, Aubrey as her Master and she his submissive during their weekly meetings. As the story moves on we learn more about some of the other Courtesans and the Gentleman who manages the group. We also spend some time at Aubrey's Haberdashery and because of Stark's ability to do each character justice again the reader becomes a shopper in Aubrey's place of business or a voyeur in Aubrey and Lucinda's bed chamber.

Even though the book is timed at 9 hours and 40 minutes, for me the time flew by. When I would have to stop listening I would always look around and see oh yes, I've come back to the real world. There is a difference in how the written book and the audio book work for the reader/listener. With Victoria Vale's books her ability with words gives your imagination a chance to get into the story. Add the audio book to that mix and with Vale's words and Drake's voices you go back in time, sit in the sitting rooms, visit the Haberdashery, listen to conversations that Courtesans have with each other playing pool. I cried in several spots, both for Aubrey and Lucinda.

Really, all I can say is do not think twice about getting this audio book, it is pure entertainment and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I was gifted with a copy of this audiobook for reviewing and the review consists of my own thoughts and words.

What a Courtesan Wants

I wondered how this story would work, with the H from one race and the h from another, but this author managed it believably. I don't know why I worried because I thought the same thing when I first started reading this series and was wowed then too.

Lucinda is a bedroom sub who lost her husband two years before. She was feeling lonely even though she still didn't want to let go of her deceased husband. Aubrey is a Dominate. Aubrey was tiring of being an oddity for women to use him and discard easily. When Aubrey and Lucinda meet the match is just right and the timing worked out. He was supportive and wonderful everything a woman wants in her man.

I found these characters easy to connect with and the story flowed smoothly, the chemistry between these characters was hot, and I was not disappointed at all in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes their historical romances steamy but with a wonderful story to go with it.

I thought the narrator in this book did a good job telling this story.

Beautiful Story

This is the second book in The Gentleman Courtesans Series, an Erotica Romance. Lucinda and Aubrey's story is beautifully written, sensual/erotic, and captivating. They are great together, and they share a sizzling hot chemistry. Darcy Stark did an amazing job with the narration! He has the perfect voice as Aubrey. I enjoyed it and I highly recommend it! Looking forward to listen to the next installment, Making of a Scandal. I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Victoria Vale & Darcy Shark did it again!!!

Wow! I think that one word answer is enough description to describe the utter brilliance of this plot! I loved the evolution of the female character and how she had to give up her grief to have a chance for something new, and boy did she get a new beginning indeed! The I tomate scenes still makes me curl my toes in delight and shudder in satisfaction when Victoria and Darcy makes another plot into a sensual treat which is best savoured while listening! It was so good, can’t wait for further plots soon!

Loved This Book ❤️🔥

This was such an amazing listen!! I love Victoria Vale books!
I already had the privilege to read an ARC from the author.
Aubrey is a gentleman courtesan with special talents. Lady Lucinda is a widow and has decided to come out of mourning after so many years.
She is referred to the Gentleman Courtesans by a vey good friend. Aubrey is matched with Lucinda since she is into BDSM.
Get ready for a fun, hot romance, but with action and surprises!
The narrator Darcy Stark performance was excellent!!

Another winner -

Lady Lucinda Bowery, a widow of 2 yrs, has decided it's time to come out of mourning... albeit, hesitantly... She reaches out to the secretive Gentleman Courtesan Club, as Lady Bowery is looking for a special kind of companion.

Enters.. Aubrey Drake... Aubrey Drake has the special kind of qualities that Lady Lucinda Bowery is looking for, as he is a dominant, where Lucinda is a Submissive... Lucinda's husband was a dominant as well, and she hasn't had a dominant or anyone for 2 years.. She was so in love with her husband, that she couldn't move on for 2 years.

Aubrey Drake is also owns a business and cares for his young niece, so he works as a courtesan, to help his business as well as supporting his niece.

These two are a perfect match, and eventually do fall in love..

This was such a great story and Darcy Stark did such a great job of narration.

I was giving this book freely in exchange for an honest review.

Love through struggle

This story of a man who works hard to make it better for all he loves and a woman who is scared to move from the past is so touching sexy loving. Victoria has continued to build up a story that has me wanting more. Aubrey is a man who wants desperately to be loved for himself while Lucy doesn’t know if she can love again. The narrator Darcy keeps me engaged and has a smooth way of narrating what Victoria has written. This book is truly for 18+.

Not for the squeamish

I'm not a fan of BDSM and only listened as part of the series. The story is brilliantly told and narrated and I can understand why some people are seduced by this type of relationship. The tenderness of the romance and the brutality of the sex are described in graphic detail.

Steamy, sensual, and surprising...

What a Courtesan Wants is the stern and explicitly-steamy Regency tale of two people from very different sides of the tracks, who may just be exactly what the other needs. When Lucinda's husband dies she not only loses her Lord but her Master. Can trained Dominant, Aubrey, really fill the hole that Magnus left behind?

When we first meet Lucinda she is determined to try and recapture a little of the spirit that deserted her after her husband's passing, and once at Lady Dane's townhouse, Benedict entices Lucinda to peruse Aubrey's wares most tantalisingly!

I also enjoyed the departure from the historical 'norm' that we saw in Aubrey Drake. Despite his dissatisfaction with the work as a Courtesan, it was nice to see a man with African heritage in a historical. Historical fiction has neglected the diversity of the British Isles for far too long, and the romance genre as a whole has a widely-acknowledged problem with inclusivity. Yet his ethnicity was not the defining feature of his character or his interactions with others, without downplaying the impact it had on his experiences.

I laughed aloud at the description of a playful object, with "its base winking in the firelight" but, alas, dare not furnish you with the context in such polite company...

Vale's stories are always deeply character-driven. She does not neglect the setting, but there is always the sense that their surroundings recede a little as the couple's interest in each other grows.

One of the things I especially enjoy about the Gentlemen Courtesans series, and What a Courtesan Wants in particular, is its focus upon male friendship. Historical romance often features a heroine and her gaggle of sisters, or a hero and his second, but it is rare to find a group of men who are invested in each other's lives.

The excellent narrator, Darcy Stark, moves seamlessly from cool, clipped tones to softer and more sumptuous vocals, clearly differentiating not only the different characters and sexes but their moods and desires.

I would recommend What A Courtesan Wants to everyone who enjoys dark Regency stories, and especially to those seeking historical romance with broader representation than is standard. It can be listened to as a standalone but is at its best as part of a wickedly entertaining series.

An Absolute Pleasure!

What I love about Victoria Vale's stories is that besides the heat level there is always a fascinating and really interesting story with amazing characters.
Aubrey and Lucy could have a most remarkable permanent relationship and after almost losing each other a few times I began to wonder if this would n fact happen. The story is full of romancing and angst as the two of them fight the demons of their pasts and blossoming love for each other.
It flows from scene to scene, getting more and more interesting as each scene unfolds and eventually reaches its wonderful climax (pun intended!).
I just loved Darcy Stark's narration of this audiobook and he made listening to it an absolute pleasure. His voice is perfectly suited for Aubrey and the others are a good match too.
This is definitely a book/audiobook that I am recommending!
I listened to a copy of the audio version and my voluntary review above is unbiased.
