Publisher's Summary

From Wall Street Journal best-selling author Giana Darling comes an enemies-to-lovers forbidden romance between an ice-cold lawyer and her infamous mafioso client who is on trial for murder...

I am the villain of my own story...

Jilted by my fiancé.

A disappointment to my family.

Haunted by my childhood traumas.

I felt so much all my life that I resolved to feeling nothing at all.

Until I met my match.

As the most infamous mafioso of the 21st century, Dante Salvatore was madly passionate, unequivocally bad, and entirely too dangerous to know. He was everything I abhorred, yet I found myself representing him in the biggest criminal trial of the decade.

I was so focused on winning and achieving the success I deserved that I didn't notice the gorgeous, black-eyed man's effect on me until it was too late. My icy heart had been held too close to his flame, and now I wouldn't let Dante go down without fighting with everything I had in me. Even if the cost of a new life with him meant the loss of my old life and everything I thought I held dear.

Book one in the Anti-Heroes in Love Duet.

One small issue:

Overall I was completely engrossed in the story and characters and I recommend it... however I feel the otherwise wonderful talent of Rose Dioro (the female narrator) was harmed by how she mispronounced several words. I would happily listen to her again but preferably with a little more coaching or guidance. I am always frustrated when narrators say certain words incorrectly because I wonder why no one corrected them or they didn't look up how to pronounce the word online.
Additionally, the editing wasn't quite on point and several words had clearly autofilled as the wrong thing. But the story is still a winner despite these minor issues.

Somehow I Love It Even More!

Wow! This book on audio made me love it even more, I had no clue that was possible. Hearing Rose Dioro and Jeremy York bring Dante and Elena to life was amazing and they did such a phenomenal job doing it. Everything in my original review still rings true. I truly forgot how much I loved these two.

My Original Review:

Talk about savoring a book. I swear to you, every time Giana Darling comes out with a new book I always have to savor it. Let me start off by saying I was very, very hesitant with this book. I did not partially care for either Dante Salvatore and Elena Lombardi. I knew it may have been a challenge for me to like both of them. I didn't find them likable at all from the previous books I’ve seen them in. However, the deeper I got into the book, the more and more I was absolutely intrigued and enamored with them. Seeing things from their point of view really helped me understand and actually like them. I so appreciated the slow burn of their relationship, it made it even better once Elena finally let go and dove head first into the likes of Dante and believe me when I tell you the chemistry these two have is just off the charts hot. There is just something about Mafia men that really draws me to them. The intrigue, mystery, dangerousness. It’s all so tempting. I can’t wait to see where things go in book two because I’m ready to read it now!!!

Amazing

I am speechless. I am breathless. I am wrung dry and yet I am still desperate for more.

Giana Darling delivers one of the most complex and eye opening dives into not just the mafia world, but the female psyche in When Heroes Fall (Book 1 Anti Heroes in love duet).

If you have read the Enslaved Duet and or the Evolution of Sin Trilogy, Elena Lombardi is set up to be the most dislikable female character. So I went in with very low expectations on Elena. I already knew I was going to be madly in love with Dante, but we will get to him. Instead, from chapter one, Elena’s depth, complexity, heartbreak, and loneliness grips you. She is so much more than her cold exterior. Her drive for success and perfection, is rooted so deeply in her past that you will find yourself desperate to be forgiven for your prior prejudice against her.

Dante Salvatore cannot possibly define more male dominance and pure romantic if he tried. This man is everything you could possible want in a male hero (anti hero). He is strong, quick witted, highly intelligent, ruthless, and patient, kind, and understanding there is no other option than to fall. Even-though he harness all the power of the New York City Camorra, he never uses it as a fear tactic against Elena. There is more power in kindness than in fear and Dante defines that.

When Heroes Fall will make you question everything moral and the very foundation of your makeup.

One of my Top Favorite audiobooks!! A must listen!

Hands down one of my TOP FAVORITE audiobooks!!! These narrators brought this story to life in every way….emotion, suspense and passion!!!

What do you get when you cross an ice queen with a hot mafioso capo written by this author? Pure fire and

I know when I read a G Darling book that first off the writing is going to be brilliant - it is timeless and reads like prose. And secondly - there is going to be crazy sexual tension and hot sensual characters that burn up the pages, and this book is no different. Not only will the chemistry between Dante & Elena and the mafia suspense keep you glued to the pages; but for me it was Elena's character development - her revelations and inner battle between right and wrong, good and bad, and realizing the true meaning of family, loyalty and love made this ice queen thaw, and I admired her more and more on each page.

Elena Lombardi was a villain going into this book...the previous betrayal by her ex and her sister led her to retaliate with cruel words and actions. Her life has not been easy - and she has put up concrete walls around her heart that she was not willing to let down. But when capo Dante Salvatore steps into her life he is just what she needs to reevaluate what she thought was the perfect and straight and narrow path of life. She was afraid to veer far from it, motivated by only her career, success and money. But when she is brought on Dante's criminal case, her eyes are quickly opened to the dark secrets and betrayals of who she thought were heroes, and the villains suddenly didn't not seem as bad as she believed them to be.

This is a story of finding yourself again, of accepting your flaws for what they are, and being brave enough to take a chance on what you thought you may never have. The underlying theme of heroism versus villainy is written brilliantly into both Dante & Elena's dialogues, and the character development and how they are each perceived had me completely captivated to their story. Their contradicting outer selves pieced together so perfectly that I could not imagine one without the other. Dante charmed his dark and dangerous self into Elena's life so seamlessly, and I fell head over heels for him and his possessive and alpha persona. Dante truly is a dark knight in this story and I can't wait to see what is in store for this couple in When Villains Rise.

"Whatever you and I are made of, it's the same. You don't have to be good with me, right or true in any sense, but especially the conventional. You can be your worst self with me."

Well done once again G Darling!!!

I Could Have Listened To This Book For Forever

When Heroes Fall is the first book in the Anti-Hero's in love Duet from Giana Darling. This is the story of Dante Savatore and Elena Lombardi. She is living her life doing her thing but carries around a shattered heart. Mine would be too if I was her. He is a mafioso who is charged with three very serious crime but the on the judge if focused on is murder. She has met him one time before but now she is on the team of lawyers representing him because her sister called her in hysterics needing a favor. This is it. Help the big bad man get out of the charges and go free. At first she hates him and I do mean hates him with passion and knows with everything in her that he is guilty as sin. Dante however is a very charming man and he get under Elena's skin way to easy. But before long he isn't getting under her skin in the I hate you kind of way but more the where the heck did this guy come from and how did I not see him coming from a million miles away kind of way. I loved both of these characters. Elena is the strong girl who is fighting to be the best lawyer she can be and has her life together except for when it comes to romance and love. After all her fiancé did leave her for her sister and man if that had happened to me I would be mad at the entire world. Dante is possessive, super confident and boy oh boy does he have this charming side to him. I loved both of these characters but I really loved the story more that anything. This book has one fantastic plot and will keep you one your toes and one the edge of your seat. I loved every second of it and so can not wait to have the next book in my hands.
The Narrator's did an absolutely amazing job and I felt like I was watching a mini movie in my head as I was listening.

Even more powerful as audio!

I've read this book when i first was released and now listened to the audio. Rose Dioro and Jeremy York are absolutely wonderful as Elena and Dante and enhance this amazing story even more!
____

Elena Lombardi and Dante Salvatore. Two villainous anti-heroes, but it couldn’t be for more different reasons.

Elena, because of her iciness and egoism and, well, narcissism, as well as her tenaciousness to claw up the ranks and always be the best. Bitter, calculating and cruel. Driven by money and power. Unlikeable, really – or so I thought prior to meeting her here and getting an insight into her head to see what makes her tick, to understand where she comes from, what shaped her into this ice queen she is known as.

And Dante … well, simply because of his chosen profession: Capo di capos of the New York Camorra. A criminal. But contrary to Elena, his character arc in previous books made him nothing if not likeable. Honestly, I fell for him from his very first appearance and all the more with the way things ended for him in the Enslaved duet – his brother Alexander and his best friend Cosima’s story. To say I was excited to finally get his story is a total understatement.

Fire and ice. Criminal and immoral to law-abiding and moral to a fault. Selfless to narcissistic. How could these two ever, ever work? But Giana Darling makes it happen, all while always staying true to their respective characters. Elena’s character development and redemption arc in this one is strong. It is done beautifully and with care, revealing a heart full of love beneath which history has drilled into her she should rather shield than show. My own heart thawed a lot toward her, I felt for her learning about the emotional turmoil and even health issues she had and has to endure …

A beautifully done mafia romance, filled to the brim with tension, suspense and angst, and a slow burn story bound to make your toes curl. All of you who are hesitant to pick this up because you hated Elena in the past, please give her a chance, watching her evolve and grow and falling for the black-eyed mafioso she abhorred so much at first is nothing if not a thing of beauty. Don’t miss out on that.

Great Mafia Romance

I loved this novel and especially the characters. Elena Lombardi is probably my favorite character in a book and to see her grow and evolve is just so amazing. And then Dante is just perfection. I loved how the narrators really encompassed their personalities ❤️

Slow Burn Mafia Romance!

I am a big lover of Giana's Lombardi world. Most are fans of her Fallen Men series but for me the Lombardi's have everything I love about romance with an edge. I fell in love with Dante Salvatore in the Enslaved Duet and Elena in the Evolution of Sin series. The Capo who is pure of heart when it comes to those he loves and a woman who has survived so much, who just needs someone to challenge her, to see what a strong and loveable woman she is.

My one criticism is the pacing, it was definitely a slow burn and a lot of the book was used to build up the setting and position that Elena finds herself in. This does help readers who have no prior knowledge of the Lombardi world to dive right in. For some I think this will be too slow, but I just ate up all the chemistry and enjoy spending time with these characters and their general presence.

Dante just owns me, the man is all consuming, powerful, but he has a softness that puts you at ease. The way he loves those that matter to him is alluring and his confidence knows no bounds. I craved the moment Elena would let go and succumb to Dante's attraction and when she did WOW! hotness overload! I think When Heroes Fall really showed Elena as a woman desperately searching for who she is outside of being defined and judged by the men in her life. You really see the vulnerable woman she is and yet her strength is undeniable. I just love everything about her.

There were several special moments where Giana captured the humanity of these two characters when in other books this has been so easy to strip away from them and I loved that juxtaposition. Dante and Elena both took a chance on the other in this book, they just fit!

I enjoyed the Audio and I think Rose did a wonderful job portraying Elena. Jeremy is a new to me narrator and I enjoyed his performance, I think he had a really tough job nailing Dante's accent as a English/Italian Capo. It took me a little while to get used to the sound of it but I settled into it eventually. Overall the audio was well worth a listen and served as a great refresher to the first part of the duet I enjoyed reading.
