Story
In the fading town of Rooster, Texas, all that's really left is a service station, a church…and the Banty House, a long-ago Depression-era brothel. For more than seventy-five years, Betsy, Connie, and Kate Carson have called their mama's house a home. The three eccentric sisters get by just fine with their homemade jams and jellies, a little moonshine on the side, and big hearts always open to strangers. Like Ginger Andrews.

Publisher's Summary
Life is meant to be savored, but that’s not easy with no family, limited prospects, and a past you’d rather not talk about. Still, Callie Smith doesn’t know how to feel when she discovers she has a brother and a sister - Malcolm, who grew up with affection, wealth, and privilege, and Keira, a streetwise 12-year-old. Callie doesn’t love being alone, but at least it’s safe. Despite her trepidation, she moves into the grand family home with her siblings and grandfather on the shores of Lake Washington, hoping just maybe this will be the start of a whole new life.
But starting over can be messy. Callie and Keira fit in with each other, but not with their posh new lifestyle, leaving Malcolm feeling like the odd man out in his own home. He was clever enough to turn a sleepy Seattle mail-order food catalog into an Online gourmet powerhouse, yet he can’t figure out how to help his new sisters feel secure. Becoming a family will take patience, humor, a little bit of wine, and a whole lot of love. But love isn’t Malcolm’s strong suit...until a beautiful barista teaches him that an open heart, like the family table, can always make room for more.
In this emotional, funny, and heartfelt story, Susan Mallery masterfully explores the definition of a modern family - blended by surprise, not by choice - and how those complicated relationships can add unexpected richness to life.

Good except
I loved the story but I wish authors would not put in the sex scenes in graphic detail. It doesn't add to the story and I think readers get it without it. When I'm listening to my stories in the car I don't want to have to pay that close attention to the off button when I have a passenger.

Narrator makes a difference
I read an excerpt of this book and was excited to get the whole book. It was a fun story, however I have decided that I don't care for this particular narrator (whom I have listened to before). I have read and listened to many Susan Mallery books but may just stick to reading from now on.

Terrible narrator
I couldn't even finish the first chapter. The narrator's clipped diction isn't normal. Everything is spoken as if by a non-English speaking person; every consonant is emphasized and hard.

Difficult to listen to
The book was enjoyable except for the clumsily written obligatory sex scenes which I fast forwarded through and didn't miss anything. The narrator had apparently been told her diction needed work, so she was very careful to pronounce the word "to" very clearly, which made the reading very stilted and awkward. I will not skip listening to samples in the future.

Refreshing Story
This is my 2nd book by Susan Mallery and I loved the story. 4.5 stars. I like Tanya Eby but the characters sounded the same at times. This story was different and a refreshing change. I loved all the main characters: Malcolm, Santiago Callie, Keira, and Delaney. Great story about a blended family and finding love.#SiblingStories #FeelGood #Heartfelt #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Another Mallory Winner!
..And Susan Mallery does it again. After not reading anything written by Mallory or read by Eby for a long time, I decided I’d try again. Mallery’s stories were beginning to all sound the same to me. But I took a chance on this one and was pleasantly surprised. I really loved this one, and I especially loved the characters. This story was new and fresh and went right to the very end, keeping me totally engaged. If you’re a Susan Mallery fan, this one is a keeper.

Poor performance
Would have rather read and enjoyed this book as hard copy. Narrator over-enunciated words. Narrator also did not change her voice with different characters making it difficult to keep track which character was speaking during conversation. Narrator had too sharp of diction for me. I only listened through to the very end, because this was one of my book club books, otherwise, I would have returned this book without completion. Would not recommend this as an audible listen.

Beautiful story with a great narrator.
A truly gifted writer. Her characters have such depth, complexity and are fully believable.
The narrator is perfect.
This is a truly delightful story from start to finish.
Sex/desire is touched on a few times and described in detail just once. This is done extremely tastefully. Any woman who has felt intense desire will be able to fully connect with that character and all should be able to appreciate the beautiful way the author describes intimacy. Though obviously this is not a prerequisite to enjoying the book.
This is a love story but it is so much more. From love for a partner to love within a family both newly formed and well established. From respect for yourself to respect for others. Showing that we should all forgive ourselves for our mistake and learn to love and trust again in whatever form that mat take.
There are many parts of this book that are more useful than any of the best selling self help books. Never preaching or pushy, always indirect and always through the character driven story.
The author always has characters that are fully fleshed out. They're always "real" people with flaws, baggage and full back stories. There are no plastic, perfect people and I love that in all of her books. Whether they are male or female, child or OAP they are relatable and you care about them as you follow their ups and downs and personal growth.
If you enjoy stories of romance and hope you should buy this book.
