True-crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace. As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls - haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside.

Publisher's Summary
In this pause-resisting psychological thriller from an author who Stephen King called “an absolute master”, a young female police officer faces danger on all fronts - from a clever victim of abuse, her colleagues on the force, and even her own mobster father.
Philomena McCarthy is a young, ambitious police office with the elite Metropolitan Police in London. When she responds to a domestic-violence call, she finds the victim, Tempe Brown, trying to protect her abuser, a married man named Darren Goodall, a decorated Scotland Yard detective afraid of no one. As Philomena pursues the case against him, she not only encounters resistance from her police force colleagues but also becomes dangerously entangled with the victim - who is not at all whom she appears to be - much to the increasing endangerment of herself and Henry, her fiancée.
Complicating matters is Philomena’s estranged father, Edward McCarthy, a powerful man who has built a criminal empire along with his brothers. Philomena has long tried to pursue her career as a police officer without her father’s involvement, but as she falls under suspicion of stalking and harassing Goodall, her father becomes involved.
As the situation escalates, Tempe’s sinister maneuvers further entangle Philomena in a web of secrets, corruption, and murder, putting Philomena’s impending marriage, career, and very survival in jeopardy....
Spellbinding, suspenseful, and filled with complex characters that could be heroes or villains, Robotham has crafted a smart and propulsive thriller that’s impossible to pause.
Critic Reviews
"Sobey portrays Phil with equal parts pathos and ambition. She varies accents, which makes the secondary characters sound distinct and compelling. Humorous moments crackle with life, while violent confrontations simmer with tension. Sobey's performance elevates the story’s suspense and memorable lead character." (AudioFile Magazine)

Where is Michael Robotham??
I love his other books and was so excited to get a new one. I'm almost halfway through and think I've slipped into a coma. I don't care about any of the characters and the story so far is just not that engaging. The mob backstory - zzzzzzzzzzz. I've stopped and listened to two other books that were much more interesting. Come back, Michael! Come back!

What did I read?
Sadly, I was 3/4 of the way though this book when I realized that I had suffered through it once before. I cannot fathom why I wouldn't of remembered it, unless it was I blocked it to preserve my sanity.
I absolutely love the author, which is why I can't understand how he wrote this. I am sure Audible must have a PLEASE DON'T LET ME BUY AGAIN FEATURE it can install.

Falls short for this talented author
I have listened to all of this author's books. I have particularly enjoyed the Joseph O'Loughlin series, which are so clever and well-written and narrated. In fact, I have listened to them more than once. This book felt like it was written by an entirely different author, and if it had been the first book I came across by MR I would not have listened to another one. The main character makes so many ridiculous mistakes that it became absurd. The character was not likeable, nor any characters for that matter. I am sorry to say, but this book is a complete stinker.

Love Michael Robotham but…..
I was excited for a new book from the author. I’ve liked Joseph O’Loughlin & loved Vincent Ruiz! I could not stand Philomena McCarthy! I can’t count the number of times I was yelling at the book, “come on, you are a cop & are this clueless!!”. So disappointed. Narrator was good and I liked her mobster family.

Not his best work
I have listened to all of Robotham's books. There was only one before this that I couldn't make it through and was really surprised because they are all so compelling. This book was okay, but there were too many loose plot points that a good editor could have helped tighten up. Like how do you cut your father's family completely out of your life for 9 years and then suddenly, all is forgiven and everyone is perfectly fine with each other?
He is a better writer than this.
