Publisher's Summary

In this “heart-clutching psychological thriller” (People) from an author who Stephen King calls “an absolute master,” a young female police officer faces danger on all fronts—from a clever victim of abuse, skeptical colleagues on the force, and even her own father.

Philomena McCarthy is an ambitious police officer with the elite Metropolitan Police in London. The estranged daughter of a notorious and powerful mobster, she has defied the odds to follow her dream. On a routine patrol, Philomena responds to a domestic violence call and rescues a bloodied young woman, Tempe Brown, who is the mistress of a decorated and intimidating London detective, Darren Goodall. The incident is hushed up by the police to protect Goodall’s reputation, but Philomena has now made a dangerous enemy who is afraid of no one.

Philomena and Tempe strike up a tentative friendship, determined to protect each other from Goodall, but something isn’t quite right about the stories Tempe tells and the secrets she keeps. Yet the young officer is drawn into Tempe’s world, unsure of what is real or invented. After a bungled break-in and an unsolved murder, Philomena finds herself trapped—with her career, her impending wedding, and her very survival in doubt.

Robotham’s brilliant ability to render complex characters, both good and bad, keeps readers sympathetic, yet unsure of whom to trust, “maintain[ing] an air of excruciating suspense” (The Washington Post)—until the very last page.

Critic Reviews

"Sobey portrays Phil with equal parts pathos and ambition. She varies accents, which makes the secondary characters sound distinct and compelling. Humorous moments crackle with life, while violent confrontations simmer with tension. Sobey's performance elevates the story’s suspense and memorable lead character." (AudioFile Magazine)

I did not enjoy this at all!

I am a fan of this Author. I absolutely adore the Joseph O'loughlin series. Unfortunately this book was a hard miss for me. It started off promising, but by a third of the way through I was uninterested.

Where is Michael Robotham??

I love his other books and was so excited to get a new one. I'm almost halfway through and think I've slipped into a coma. I don't care about any of the characters and the story so far is just not that engaging. The mob backstory - zzzzzzzzzzz. I've stopped and listened to two other books that were much more interesting. Come back, Michael! Come back!

What did I read?

Sadly, I was 3/4 of the way though this book when I realized that I had suffered through it once before. I cannot fathom why I wouldn't of remembered it, unless it was I blocked it to preserve my sanity.

I absolutely love the author, which is why I can't understand how he wrote this. I am sure Audible must have a PLEASE DON'T LET ME BUY AGAIN FEATURE it can install.

The most inconceivable book you can imagine with so many unfathomable coincidences.

Such A Disappointment

I loved the last MR books I read and was anxious for this one. I wasn't able to return it, so I kept listening. I even made it faster to get through it!

Definitely not believable.

A Unique Read

The plot of this book followed no well-worn trails to its conclusion. It kept the reader wondering and on edge throughout. I really enjoyed it

Falls short for this talented author

I have listened to all of this author's books. I have particularly enjoyed the Joseph O'Loughlin series, which are so clever and well-written and narrated. In fact, I have listened to them more than once. This book felt like it was written by an entirely different author, and if it had been the first book I came across by MR I would not have listened to another one. The main character makes so many ridiculous mistakes that it became absurd. The character was not likeable, nor any characters for that matter. I am sorry to say, but this book is a complete stinker.

Love Michael Robotham but…..

I was excited for a new book from the author. I’ve liked Joseph O’Loughlin & loved Vincent Ruiz! I could not stand Philomena McCarthy! I can’t count the number of times I was yelling at the book, “come on, you are a cop & are this clueless!!”. So disappointed. Narrator was good and I liked her mobster family.

Not his best work

I have listened to all of Robotham's books. There was only one before this that I couldn't make it through and was really surprised because they are all so compelling. This book was okay, but there were too many loose plot points that a good editor could have helped tighten up. Like how do you cut your father's family completely out of your life for 9 years and then suddenly, all is forgiven and everyone is perfectly fine with each other?
He is a better writer than this.
