Publisher's Summary
From playwright, author, and Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg, When You Finish Saving the World tells the moving and evocative story of three individuals working to understand each other and themselves: Nathan, a father learning to connect with his newborn son; Rachel, a young college student seeking to find her place in a relationship and in life, before marriage to Nathan; and Ziggy, their son, a teenager hoping to figure out where he came from, and where he’s headed. The shifts between time frames in these characters’ lives span more than a decade and eloquently capture the complexities of growing up, having children, and fitting in.
Eisenberg - the star of The Social Network, The Squid and the Whale, and Zombieland - stars as Nathan; Kaitlin Dever, star of Booksmart and Unbelieveable, is the voice of Rachel; and Finn Wolfhard, star of Stranger Things, plays Ziggy, their son.

The tide is turning against the colonists in the Revolutionary War, and 18-year-old Elizabeth Morris cannot sit by idly. Quietly disdainful of her Tory parents, who drag her along to society events and welcome a British soldier into their home during their occupation of New York City, Elizabeth decides to take matters into her own hands. She realizes that, as a young woman, no one around her believes that she can comprehend the profound implications of being a nation at war - she is, effectively, invisible. And she can use this invisibility to her advantage.

Professor Louis Moore’s audiobook about the history of African Americans in sports in the United States educates listeners about the fascinating social and cultural history of the nation. For example, integration of major league and professional sports broke a major color barrier for one of the first times in the early years of the Civil Rights Movement. African American athletes competed in America long before the 20th century - in fact, they even competed during the years of slavery.

Five hours eavesdropping on therapy tapes - blech!
This is the sixth Audible freebie for this month that I’ve listened to and the first selection that did nothing for me. The audio is divided into three parts where dad, son, and mom each record their random thoughts. In what could be present day, dad talks to a therapist and focuses on his struggling marriage and interacting with his baby/ youngster. In the future, son talks to his therapy bot and uses tons of made up future slang words. In the past, shortly after 9-11, mom sends tapes overseas, talking ad nauseum about Subway sandwiches and her psychology class. This was a dull and depressing dive into three unlikable characters.

Pretty good
This book was decent. Laced with profanity, but decent. I think I enjoyed Nathan‘s part the best. When Ziggy started talking, I really couldn’t get into his 2032 lingo and when Rachel started talking, there was just too much profanity for my taste. It was interesting hearing from all three characters and seeing how this whole story tied together.

The performers were all great
I really liked the idea of this story, but I had a problem with the character, Rachel. I enjoyed listening to Jessie’s and Finn’s parts. But one already knew so much about Rachel by the time we got to her, that i thought it could have been a lot less of her. I found the rambling a million miles an hour really annoying, and actually skipped a lot. I loved the 2032 lingo and life details that were concocted - cracked me up. I am over sensitive to Rachel’s style, I guess, because my daughter starts in like that and can go for hours and I can’t escape. So that’s why I took off a star for overall and story. Too much Rachel.

Profoundly Thoughtful Examination of Relationships in a Family
Jesse Eisenberg has written a very profound and moving audio drama about the Katz family. The performances from Jesse, Finn Wolfhard and Kaitlyn Dever were stellar and really captured the vulnerability and misunderstandings all three characters were experiencing at different points in their lives. Choosing to tell the story in an audio recording felt like an intimate play and it was a creative method to bring the audience closer to these complex characters that were not only funny and relatable but also lonely and frustrated.

The way the story is told from 3 perspectives at different points in time was interesting and the diary format makes the listener feel very intimate with the characters. Interesting
The individual “recordings” is an interesting concept. The narrators were good actors and added emotions and depth to the script. Unfortunately it ended up being somewhat disjointed, the characters were supposed to be connected but it was hard to find the links between them.
I did ff a lot through Ziggy because of the frequency of the word “like”. I was surprised because his was set in the future and his language was clearly from the future, but today’s misuse of “like” didn’t fit with that.
Overall it was entertaining and different. Glad it was free, thanks Audible!

Middle Section Lets Down A Promising Start
Disclaimer: I'm not actually finished the book (approximately half way through while writing this), but had to earn future readers about the extremely irritating middle third of this book.
The book is broken into three sections: from the point of view of a father (Eisenberg), a son (Wolfhard) and (presumably, as I haven't yet reached it) the mother (Dever). Each section is told as a series of 6 audio files to be listened to by a therapist. Eisenberg's first section is really engaging and hints at interesting later revelations as he describes his frustrations at struggling to live up to his role as a new father.
However. What follows next is, even being generous, completely unlistenable. Wolfhard plays Eisenberg's whiny, moany teenage son, who complains endlessly about every aspect of his life. To be fair to Wolfhard, he plays the role magnificently. However, I feel like I should be getting paid to listen to his sections as there was very little enjoyment on my end. Getting through these chapters has up to now been such a chore that I may soon give up and advance to the later chapters.
Will update this review when finished - hopefully Dever's section redeems some of this book! (Update: it did not. I returned the book.)

special, different but but disappointing
i enjoyed the first two parts, mainly the first. The third part was unbearable for me. It's a family recording their feelings, the father shows something intriguing, his self discovery. Same with the young kid. The mother speaks with an old boyfriend, very awkward speeches. I guess is for teenagers, but I learned as well.

Boring and annoying
I came with 45 minutes of the end of this book and just couldn’t bring myself to finish it, I was just finding it too annoying to finish.
The concept of the book is split into three parts. The first are the recordings Nathan, a young father, makes to his therapist. The second is Nathan’s now teenage son making recordings to another therapist, lastly there is Rachel making tape recordings to post to her boyfriend. Each section is barely connected to each other, and are rather like a set of stand alone stories told through monologues. It’s an interesting concept.
The first section was alright, but the second section of the book was just unforgivably poor. The character of Ziggy was extremely annoying, extremely so. It was horrendous to listen to. After that it killed my desire to listen any further.
The voice acting was good, I do think this is a novel attempt at a different concept in a story. Though frankly I just found it all a massive waste of time and actually quite boring. The story doesn’t go anywhere, if there even is a story here which I don’t think there was.

But what does it mean?
I really enjoyed this. The performances are of the highest quality, more like a theatre production than a traditional narration. It affected me and I’ll be reflecting on the meaning for a good while I expect. I guess it’s a good advert for counselling... Or maybe a bad one since the characters all find some resolution with little or no ‘feedback’.

Highly recommend
I finished this a few days ago and haven't stopped thinking about it. The performances are all great and there were moments where it genuinely brought me to tears. Personally, I love a story that slowly unravels and/or connects and I bet with more listens this will reveal to be even more intersting - more connections, more moments. I thought the way the story was told, in three different timelines, was unique and it was interesting to see the different perspectives on these three characters during those separate points. Highly recommend this if you're interested in cycles or families or the passage of time and how it effects people.

Not terrible but not great.
I didn’t really like any of the characters to be quite honest and I found Ziggy to be just plain annoying with no redeeming qualities. This format would have been great if the characters were even remotely likeable.
