Publisher's Summary

National Best Seller

In this accessible and groundbreaking book - filled with the moving stories of real people medical doctor and best-selling author Gabor Maté shows that emotion and psychological stress play a powerful role in the onset of chronic illness, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, multiple sclerosis and many others, even Alzheimer's disease.

When the Body Says No is an impressive contribution to research on the physiological connection between life's stresses and emotions and the body systems governing nerves, immune apparatus, and hormones. With great compassion and erudition, Gabor Maté demystifies medical science and, as he did in Scattered Minds, invites us all to be our own health advocates.

Critic Reviews

“His medical background and lucid writing style make complex biological processes accessible to non-scientific readers.” (The Gazette, Montreal)

“Maté carefully explains the biological mechanisms that are activated when stress and trauma exert a powerful influence on the body, and he backs up his claims with compelling evidence from the field.... Both the lay and specialist reader will be grateful for the final chapter, 'The Seven A’s of Healing', in which Maté presents an open formula for healing and the prevention of illness resulting from hidden stress.” (Quill & Quire

“[An] enthralling exploration of the relationship between stress and disease.... Maté probes deeply into the life histories and psyches of [his] many patients.... What emerges is nothing short of a revelation.... When the Body Says No has the power to change medical thinking.” (The Edmonton Journal

Amazing book!

The best written and researched book I have found on the mind-body connection in relation to disease. I have multiple autoimmune conditions and have been reading and learning all I can for many years, I can’t recommend it high enough.

Life-changing

It put everything in perspective and made me realize that even stuff I absolutely thought are helping me cope with childhood trauma are in fact making it harder. Truly a must read.

A must read for anyone, ill or not

Would put this on required reading list for anyone who is a child, parent, friend, lover, or just a human. It's only going to help you better understand what gets in the way of being more fully Homan and more positively experiencing life. So much explanation, and ALL the science we've needed to back it all all. On a more personal note, I found myself saying "Amen! " , and "Thank you!" so many times, as so much of this my inner core self knew and occasionally my mind knew, but I've been shunned for living out of or considered rather woo woo for speaking about. The connection between physical health and having our needs for autonomy, affection, attachment, acceptance, approval, intimacy, love met, psychological/spiritual health has long been undeniable, even while I have lived my conditioned role of silent caretaker to my own detriment.

Thanks for this very helpful detailed validating proof, and explaining our options to heal, especially in audio form.
And thank you to the narrator for making it super easy to understand even tho there's plenty of science in it. Will recommend to anyone.

Not “just another book on stress”

While the author states at the end that this book was rejected by multiple publishers as “just another book on stress”, and while there is definitely some truth to that statement, the book is insightful and powerful nonetheless.
