Publisher's Summary

Growing up, Jude McCallister was the bane of my existence.

My best friend. Fiercest ally. The most annoying boy in the world. At 18, the boy I loved to hate became the man I couldn’t live without. We were young. Madly in love. Invincible. Strong enough to weather any storm. Cocky enough to believe that no amount of time or distance could destroy us.

When Jude finally returned home from overseas, it should have been cause for celebration. But the man I’d fallen in love with was gone, and in his place was someone I no longer recognized.

I can't do this, the note said. I'm sorry.

Now, after six long years, he’s back. Only my heart...it doesn’t beat just for him anymore.

Spoilers…

This is a deeply emotional and angst filled story. There were lots of things I really enjoyed. And several things that didn’t work for me. I’ll start with the good.
Jude is a character that is easy to love. It helped that we get to see Jude and Lila fall in love as children. They are both wonderful characters that you easily root for. When they are together it’s easy to believe everything will be ok.
Now the bad. As teenagers Jude sleeps around and Lila stays a virgin partly because she loves Jude and because he claimed her and no guy would even try.
They get together and Lila is still plagued with doubts and insecurities because of the other lovers he had. She even has a run in with one of them. I felt that was a bit unfair. And Jude needed to be more sensitive seeing as he was angry about her kissing someone. Hello pot…meet kettle. So they grow up and Jude goes off to be a marine. And sees terrible things and comes back with a lot of mental and emotional triggers. In this time he is spiraling and he hurts Lila emotionally and physically (while asleep) and I could forgive him for all of it. It was heartbreaking to see him struggle. But he leaves her…just sneaks away one night while she sleeps. Has no contact for 6 years. And only comes back for a family emergency. So he didn’t even come back because he missed Lila or loved her. He is angry and hurt to find she had a baby with another man. Umm, it’s been 6 years! And he has been sleeping with other women. But Lila apologizes and asks if he can forgive her!?! What!?! The ending was sweet and again this is a well written and deeply emotional story. I just felt it was a bit unfair that Lila was forever saving herself for Jude who felt like a flight risk to me. As much as she loved him…I wasn’t 100% sure he deserved her.

SOLID🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩FROM HARSH CRITIC!!!

I listen to so many books that I am rarely motivated to leave a written review anymore. Often, I tap out the obligatory star review and get on with it. THIS BOOK, however, deserves its due praise! You will fall in love with characters and their story. It is a somewhat predictable second-chance trope, but plot twists combined with the character and plot development make it award-worthy (IMO). Narration is excellent and character appropriate. Buy this book. You will not regret it.

Not what I expected

Definitely should have read reviews before using a credit & listening. 10 chapters in and I’ve decided I’m not finishing this book. Narration is really good and I really want to love this book because the character development at the beginning is intriguing & fun, bringing back memories of school age friends & fun. It takes a quick turn though with some pretty explicit sex talk from 12-13 year olds(totally unnecessary for the storyline, so why???) and as a previous reviewer touches on, a very strange relationship dynamic between the 2 main characters, bordering on controlling even as teenagers. So while I want to finish their love story, I can see it’s not going to be the type of love story I enjoy.

Great

Great narration by Austin Stone and C.J. Bloom. The shift in voices really brought out the book characters.

Can’t handle the female narration

The book was great! A little rough getting through with the female narration. The book was worth it though.
