Publisher's Summary

When an EMP destroys the electrical grid and a family is separated by a massive storm, who will survive?

Consumed by guilt over the accidental death of his daughter’s husband and child, a disabled veteran, John Sheridan leaves Florida and returns to his small town in the Black Hills of South Dakota to finalize the sale of a remote mountain cabin once shared with his wife. With his vision failing, he now believes this will be the last time he will see it and get to enjoy the biggest motorcycle rally in the world. But when a dirty-looking local teenage girl seeking safety breaks in and the power goes out, he learns a disturbing story and must decide whose survival matters more.

Meanwhile, in Florida, his daughter Laura ignores the evacuation order, vowing to find her sole surviving son before a crushing hurricane makes landfall. But when an act of decency at the height of chaos garners unwanted attention, her day is about to get even worse as she finds herself confronted with an even greater threat than the approaching storm.

When The World Turns Dark is a high-octane, post-apocalyptic thriller with flawed characters that explore the world after an electromagnetic pulse knocks out the power when society needs it the most. No lights. No phones. No transportation. This captivating family saga reveals what desperate people could be driven to do to survive at the worst time.

When the World Turns Dark

A solid start to a disaster survivor series. I was surprised that it took so long for the EMP to hit, but the storm system did an admirable job as stand-in for the first act. The storylines are all engaging, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they develop in the rest of the series.
I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Slow Start

Lots of unanswered questions. makes me want to read the next book. Hurricane and EMP, good story twist. Took a while to get going but it really rolled. IDK if I'll get the next book.

almost there!

It upset me that the author was SO CLOSE to a great opening book for his series.
His writing is very good as is his character development. Half the battle is creating characters that are believable and draw empathy... this he does in spades.
However the story itself while good, certainly better than average for the genre is forced at times... The explanation of what to expect from an EMP felt like: " OK were gonna pause the story and have a learning moment " all so matter a fact... the worst was when a character gave the effect radius of an EMP down to the mile... it was something like 1834 miles... Now who would say that in a conversation, this is just one of many examples.
I know I'm nit picking but it hurts when all in all the story was excellent only to be stunted by things like this.

Entertaining!

Decent storyline, excellent narration and good amount of action. I just have a hard time with the age and medical condition of the John character and all that he is able to accomplish. One minute he's having issues and the next, he's not missing any shots and barely getting a scratch on him. But I liked it enough to order the next book and find out what happens next. And I do recommend ordering this book.

Fantastic start to a great series

I fell in love with the characters of this series. I found this audiobook to be extremely well written and narrated.
The narrator does a fantastic job with the characters and the voices of each character making it easy to distinguish between the characters. Miles does a great job with the characters putting just the right amount of emotion making me feel what they are going through. I definitely recommend this audiobook!

Seen this all before

I didn't like this book unfortunately, it wasn't very interesting with a very similar story to many other EMP books. I found it hard to focus on the book because I kept loosing interest and would get distracted away from the book easily.

I was given this book for free of my own choosing and voluntarily left this review.

This is a four book series that could have been an email

Seriously thought the first two books should just have been one they were ok but the last two were grasping at straws with splintered story lines and loose plots. Most characters had no depth and don’t get me started on Scouts character. She had so much potential. Don’t waste your money.
