Publisher's Summary

After years of schooling, Beth Thatcher has graduated and is determined to become a teacher. But when she's assigned the position no one else wants - in the tiny mining town of Coal Valley, located in the rugged foothills of western Canada - she worries she doesn't have the courage to accept. Inspired by the diary of her aunt Elizabeth, who went west to teach school several years earlier, as well as her father's encouragement, Beth eventually decides to put her trust in God and leave behind all she's ever known. But the conditions in Coal Valley are even worse than she'd feared. A recent mining accident has left the town grieving and at the mercy of the mining company. The children have very little prior education, and many of the locals don't even speak English. In addition, Beth's heart is torn between two young men - both Mounties, one a lifelong friend and the other a kind, quiet man who comes to her aid more than once. Despite the unexpected challenges, Beth is determined to make a difference in the rustic frontier town. But when her sister visits from the East, reminding her of all the luxuries she's had to give up, will Beth decide to return to her privileged life as soon as the school year is over?

True enjoyment

I really enjoyed this book. I started watching the TV series on Netflix and thought I would read the book while I wait for the next season to become available. The book is a little different than the TV series but just as good!!

nice story

Sometimes as a teacher, you get depleted emotionally, even mentally and physically, and only other teachers really understand what it's like. We love and care for our students. We work hard to be the teacher our students need, while trying to also fulfill state and school mandates. However, we're often looked down upon and taken for granted by those that don't realize how difficult this job really is. It's those times, when my spirit is low and I need inspiration to continue on in this seemingly impossible job I have chosen, that I reach for this book. It reminds me that through God, and with hard work, all things are possible. It also reminds me that the relationships we build with our students is so much more important than the academics we teach. Thank you Jeanette Oke for this lovely story!

Loved it!

I just wish it were easier to find the books following this series, wish audible could figure out how to put all the series together.

Good Historical Story Well Written and Performed

This book continues in the tradition of fine Janette Oke novels as Beth, the heroine, leaves Toronto behind to become a teacher to the children of miners in Alberta. There is a culture shock as Beth leaves her privileged background and learns to adapt to her new one among those who struggle for the basics of life.

There are struggles with health, people who do not want her in Coal Valley, and a possible romantic interest as well. I read it and suggested that my wife listen to it. Both of felt it was one of the best we had listened to and award it our highest recommendation.

Loved this book!

I'm NEVER disappointed by this (these) authors. Their ability to weave a story around the lives of the characters is so skillful. This is one of the "I can't put it down" journeys into the pages of another world.

Annoying skips in recording

While the narration was good and I loved the story there were annoying skips at the start of chapters where entire words and sentences were missing.
