Publisher's Summary

A captivating debut novel about brothers who have drifted apart and the accident that will determine their future, written by an unforgettable new voice in fiction.

Some twins communicate in a secret language all their own. For Whiskey and Charlie Ferns, the two-way alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta) whispered back and forth over their crackly walkie-talkies is the best they can do. But as the brothers grow up, they grow apart. Whiskey is everything Charlie is not - bold, daring, carefree - and Charlie blames his brother for always stealing the limelight, always striving ahead while seeming to push Charlie back. By the time the twins reach adulthood, they are barely even speaking to each other.

When Charlie hears that Whiskey has been in a terrible accident and has slipped into a coma, he is shocked...although perhaps not devastated. But as days and weeks slip by, and the chances of Whiskey's recovering grow ever more slim, Charlie is forced to look back on their lives and examine whether Whiskey's actions were truly as unforgivable as Charlie believed them to be.

Selected it for the narrator, listened for the story

I came to admire Gildart Jackson while listening to him narrate the DC Smith books by Peter Grainger. I found this title while searching for another Jackson narration. Not a British detective mystery but sounded interesting. An authentic rendering of family dynamics with twin brothers at the center. Immediately engaging. Worth s credit and then some.

Two way radio unique

This was a really interesting and unique story. I loved all the characters (although at times I was mad at Charlie). Highly recommend.

Great story of two brothers and their fight to regain a long lost relationship

This book tells the story of a rivalry between twin brothers, their bitter estrangement and the accident that left one brother in a coma and the other regretting their past and praying for a doubtful reconciliation.

Hard to get through

I was tempted to quit listening several times throughout this listen. It’s long but that usually doesn’t matter to me. There were just so many times that I was frustrated by the stubborn refusal of the main character to evolve. I know many people struggle to come to terms with past issues but I felt beaten up and frustrated by the way he dealt with even minor events. Having said that, I did finish and found many elements of the story structure moved me enough to see it to the end.

Bravo!

I loved this book and the characters. I felt Charlie's pain. Loved the strong women in Whiskey and Charlie's life. And I finally committed the phonetic alphabet to memory!
