When Lise Redding's estranged sister, country-pop star Callie Redfern, is killed during a publicity stunt, the small-town music teacher is dragged from her quiet life into the spotlight. Lise hadn't spoken with Callie in ten years, ever since Callie's betrayal split them apart, so she's shocked to discover that she's inherited her sister's massive estate. Lately, she's been opting for off. But the switch flips back on when Rae's car collides with a cyclist, leaving the rider fighting for her life. After discovering the crash was a suicide attempt, Rae invites the victim - emotionally and physically fragile Kat - into her home.

Narration is awful
So far the story is good and I want to know what happens at the end, but this book I will return because the narration is awful. She sounds like a computer generated narrator. There is a lot of emotion in this book and the narrator doesn't convey that. I will end up reading this book instead of listening to it.

Pleasantly Surprised
I don’t know how I ended up with this book. I’ve had it for a little while and it was one of those, oh, I didn’t know I had this, might as well listen to it, kind of things. I really enjoyed it. It wasn’t too heavy, it was well written and well narrated. There’s a good amount of tension, though I will say some of the tension seemed a little forced and the wrap up at the end seemed to still be trying to progress the story as opposed to just ending it. But overall a nice read. I’d recommend it and maybe even read it again.

drags on and on
I am struggling to finish this book. I have an hour and forty minutes left, and I just don't think I have it in me. Any suspense dissipated within the first chapters and her mother's death. The rest is pretty predictable and too much time is spent rehashing the same conflict over and over. Maisie is such a weak, lost woman with no real personality and is a single dimensional character. It was offered as a free book of the month for Prime. Great cover and title, but it has no real connection to the actual story.

Tired plot; robotic narrator
*Some spoilers*
It was difficult to get past the robotic voice, but I did make it all the way to the end. Unfortunately, the pay off wasn't great. There was never really a struggle or any doubt that the bad guy would have his comeuppance, the sisters would reunite, the abusive baby daddy would be defeated, and the lady would get her dreamboat. I feel like some version of this story has been done a thousand times. Though the writing wasn't bad (lots of interesting descriptions), the plot was tired and uncompelling.
And that narrator! It sounded like they pulled her straight off a 1998 Mac speech generator.

Main character
The main character really got on my nerves. She was a 30 something year old but she seemed like a teenager. She was a total ditz. She ultimately comes to a more mature outlook and accepting of herself. The main character had been through some emotional abuse which colors her outlook and how she behaves but she remains either immature or naive or both. The storyline and the narration were both good.

Horrible Narrator
The narrator of this audio book mangled the story. I just have to put that out there. I think this would have been a book I would have really enjoyed, but it is hard to see past the robotic and insane narrative I had to endure. The premise of the book is that Maisey, a single mom to a young pre-teen girl, finds out that she has a twin sister that she was separated from at a young age and her mom has spent her entire life trying to keep it a secret. We follow Maisey as she tries to explore the questions surrounding this secret. I feel bad for the author getting stuck with this audio version of her book.

This is neither a thriller or a mystery...
This is a story of abuse of women over multiple generations, and not the mystery the summary made it out to be. I don't generally read/listen to that genre, so this most definitely was a big disappointment for me. And the narrator was over the top. She was great as the voice of Maisie, but the rest of the voices not so much. It was particularly odd how she used robotic speech patterns for the voice of the Hispanic cop. What the heck was that about? And why did the Looky-Lous that crashed a funeral in Washington state end up with demented southern accents? Disappointed.

Meh
It was ok. Hard to believe Tony would ritualise over his father's death each and every day. And what kind of cynical view of men does this author have? What are the odds that, apart from our protagonist's father and soon to be boyfriend, all other males are physically and/or mentally abusive to women? Um... no. This was a bit too far fetched for me. In the end, having pretty much guessed all the potential twists and mysteries, there was precious little else to keep me engaged in a book that read more like an endurance race than anything else. Vocal performance was very good.
