Story
A long-buried family secret resurfaces when one of Aloysius Pendergast's most implacable enemies shows up on his doorstep as a murdered corpse. The mystery has all the hallmarks of the perfect murder, save for an enigmatic clue: a piece of turquoise lodged in the stomach of the deceased. The gem leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine on the shore of California's desolate Salton Sea, which in turn propels him on a journey of discovery deep into his family's sinister past.

Publisher's Summary
White Fire: Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience! Past and present collide as Special Agent Pendergast uncovers mysterious connections between a string of 19th century bear attacks in a Colorado mining town, a fabled, long-lost Sherlock Holmes story, and a deadly present-day arsonist.
In 1876, in a mining camp called Roaring Fork in the Colorado Rockies, 11 miners were killed by a rogue grizzly bear. Corrie Swanson has arranged to examine the miners' remains. When she makes a shocking discovery, town leaders try to stop her from exposing their community's dark and bloody past. Just as Special Agent Pendergast of the FBI arrives to rescue his protégé, the town comes under siege by a murderous arsonist who - with brutal precision - begins burning down multimillion-dollar mansions with the families locked inside. Drawn deeper into the investigation, Pendergast discovers a long-lost Sherlock Holmes story that may be the key to solving both the mystery of the long-dead miners and the modern-day killings as well.
Now, with the ski resort snowed in and under savage attack - and Corrie's life suddenly in grave danger - Pendergast must solve the enigma of the past before the town of the present goes up in flames. Booktrack is an immersive format that pairs traditional audiobook narration to complementary music. The tempo and rhythm of the score are in perfect harmony with the action and characters throughout the audiobook. Gently playing in the background, the music never overpowers or distracts from the narration, so listeners can enjoy every minute.
When you purchase this Booktrack edition, you receive the exact narration as the traditional audiobook available, with the addition of music throughout.

I’d stopped reading this series, I think I’m back
I was hooked at Relic and devoured the series but, the 2-3 books preceding this one were, in my humble opinion, predictable, cliche and sometimes boring. I was kind of sad but I put the series down for awhile. I picked it back up at this one for some reason and I am glad. I loved this book! I enjoyed the writing, storytelling and performance. The characters were interesting. I like watching the characters evolve and grow. The plot was twisty and unique. Events were not so predictable and, even if they were, I still enjoyed watching it unravel.

Perfect Escape with a Holmesian Twist
AXL Pendergrast is back with a new tale, this one set high in the Rockies, and in the past of Merry Old England with Arthur Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde, with a newly found account of Sherlock and advice from Oscar:
"In Reading gaol by Reading town There is a pit of shame, And in it lies a wretched man Eaten by teeth of flame, In burning winding-sheet he lies, And his grave has got no name. And there, till Christ call forth the dead, In silence let him lie: No need to waste the foolish tear, Or heave the windy sigh: The man had killed the thing he loved, And so he had to die."

As a Sherlock Holmes fan, I was excited to learn he was inserted in to the story line. I enjoyed the story line as a whole as well as the setting of the story. I recommend this as a good read/listen to anyone following the Pendergast saga and it’s a great stand alone story too.
