A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable. And yet that's exactly what she does.

An Addictive Series
This series is the type of mystery novel I love best. It is definitely not a "cozy" mystery, but neither is it bogged down by procedural minutiae or ever-increasing levels of violence intended to shock jaded readers. While dark and occasionally gothic, it avoids crossing over into blood and gore horror. It's greatest strength is the sense of time and place, wrought with the aid of prodigious historical scholarship. History would be a much more intriguing subject in school if taught through the personal, human, lens employed by Harris. The way real people and events are woven throughout the series is impressive, always based upon real timelines and interests. The politics of the time offer insights into repercussions still felt today. The series also retains the reader's attention with complex, evolving characters, their psychologies enfolding across the novels as both the characters and the reader grasp hidden motivations, needs, and outlooks, becoming more self-aware and wise with time and maturity. In that sense, the series also offers an enlightening view of human nature. This is first rate literature all around, not just as a mystery novel.

Another Brilliant Sebastian St Cyr Mystery
Where does Why Mermaids Sing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It ranks near the top as I have been following the series since if first appeared. I like the period and this is a good mystery series in which the writer also has a writer who knows the period very well
Who was your favorite character and why?
My favorite charter and most interesting one is Hero Jarvis whose father wishes she were a boy and really does not understand all the things she get involved in. In this story she is involved in finding out who murdered the girls in by burning down a half-way house for prostitutes.
Which character – as performed by Davina Porter – was your favorite?
Davina Porter is such a brilliant narrator that she makes every character come alive by giving them a unique tone and quality of speech. Her narration is the unsung hero of this book. I always look for a book where she is the narrator as she is one of the best in business. She is able to give a unique voice to characters whether male, female, or children and imbues here characters with the distinguishing quality of the social class they belong to.
Any additional comments?
Any lover of historical mysteries will want this book. And I noticed that there is only one more book to add, to have all the series available on Audible .

There Are Better Mysteries Out There
Why Mermaids Sing: Sebastian St. Cyr, Book 3, narrated by Davina Porter.
I had purchased the first three of the series and reported on the first two, What Angels Fear and When Gods Die. I found them to be somewhat entertaining but not great tales or uniquely interesting plots. I did think the supporting characters could be inviting but the author just focuses in on the hero, Sebastian, and makes him out to be more than his inner thoughts during his crime scene undertakings prove him to be.
The plot got thicker and more intriguing in this novel, and was better written but I still think this is a dime edition of sex, romance and a dashing man rather than stories of intersection and told with intellectual maneuvering.
Not bad but not worth spending credits on when there are so many more mystery stories out there to provide richer thoughts on humankind.

Fabulous !
You'll start the series and will never look back. I actually binge on it, hoping Miss Harris will never stops writing. I love her aristocrat and central character Delvin Saint Cyr,and every one around him. Her writing is so fluid you glide through it, and Davina Porter, of course, is top narrator who brings each and every person alive to your ears.
Thank you so very much C.S. Harris !

Please reviewers-Review, don't give away the story
I love Davina Porter and anything she narrates is always good! I happen to be enjoying this series. I must say that this story is a bit more graphic, gruesome and descriptive of murdered bodies than I would prefer. But, my main reason for writing this is to please remind readers not to divulge information about the ending, characters, etc that tends to give away too much for those who have not yet read the book or have finished reading/listening to it. I would hope that there are people who review the reviewers content in order to prevent this...doesn't seem to be though...

A bit cumbersome but entertaining
This is the first I've listened to in the series. The author provided enough back story to give this installment context. It was interesting hearing about the manners and mores of 19th century England, although I'm not a historian so I cannot attest to historical accuracy. I did get a bit muddled with all the characters at the heart of the plot, all these men with their sons and wives. But the author did a good job of weaving storylines together. Perhaps if i had been reading a printed copy, i could have kept track better of who's who. The ending was satisfying and not melodramatic. Davina Porter is a consummate narrator. I would recommend this novel and I hope to listen to more by this author.

Another great thriller!! Such good characters!
Harris keeps getting better and better. The characters we've come to know and love (or revile, as the case may be) continue to evolve in such intriguing ways. The plot and pacing is so taut, and filled with delicious twists and turns. This series is some of the best fiction around. I'm completely hooked and running to the next installment without delay.

The most enjoyable in the series so far
Though somewhat gruesome at times, I found this one of the author's more enjoyable in the series. I hope they continue in this vein. The mystery was more convoluted and I liked not figuring things out before the author intended the reader to learn the conclusion.
