Publisher's Summary

Former Republican political operative Tim Miller answers the question no one else has fully grappled with: Why did normal people go along with the worst of Trumpism?

As one of the strategists behind the famous 2012 RNC “autopsy,” Miller conducts his own forensic study on the pungent carcass of the party he used to love, cutting into all the hubris, ambition, idiocy, desperation, and self-deception for everyone to see. In a bracingly honest reflection on both his own past work for the Republican Party and the contortions of his former peers in the GOP establishment, Miller draws a straight line between the actions of the 2000s GOP to the Republican political class's Trumpian takeover, including the horrors of January 6th.

From ruminations on the mental jujitsu that allowed him as a gay man to justify becoming a hitman for homophobes, to astonishingly raw interviews with former colleagues who jumped on the Trump Train, Miller diagrams the flattering and delusional stories GOP operatives tell themselves so they can sleep at night. With a humorous touch he reveals Reince Priebus' neediness, Sean Spicer's desperation, Elise Stefanik and Chris Christie’s raw ambition, and his close friends’ submission to a MAGA psychosis.

Why We Did It is a vital, darkly satirical warning that all the narcissistic justifications that got us to this place still thrive within the Republican party, which means they will continue to make the same mistakes and political calculations that got us here, with disastrous consequences for the nation.

No, Tim!

would have been even more satisfied, if you had narrated yourself! this guy was good, but for some of us that know you, or your public presence, we love you.

Both enlightening & heartbreaking

There were so many moments that helped to educate me on why so many of my loved ones have bought into the cult. The narrator did a fantastic job of emoting in a way that I felt Tim was reading the book himself. It brought me deeper into a world that has broken apart so many relationships with my family & friends. I waited with bated breath, hoping that Christine would have a great realization that she had been suckered like so many who follow this cult of personality. Yet, I knew it would never happen because they are too deep into the tribe, which validates their anger and victimhood. Thank you, Tim Miller, for your honesty, and for being someone in this orbit that claims your part with sincerity. Well done!

Best insight why ppl justify bad political choices

The interviews contained in this book are amazing insider looks into how people can continue to justify to themselves why it's ok to make deals with the truly unscrupulous who genuinely lie to them daily. It also explores how coercive political pressures are in maintaining standing in one's tribe, and how it can push someone fight against their own interests. Extremely honest. Highly recommended.

Hard to hear but worth the listen

Worthwhile journey through the Eyes of a former Republican into the Trump era and if there are any lessons learned by those who were part of it

Hard to put down

It's too bad Mr. Miller wasn't able to do the audio version himself. the only thing that would make this offering better would be to hear it in his own voice. Where the author shares of himself you can really tell how his decision to self assess has led to healing, strength, and freedom. in the very intimate way he shares about the social spheres he is connected to his behind the curtain exposure is incredibly enthralling and informative. Mr. Miller definitely brings the receipts.

Great Washington insider perspective

I’ve been struggling to understand the very complex reasons as to what has happened to my Republican Party. I tried to look at it from the peoples’ psychological perspectives but hadn’t realized how much of it was more than that. People didn’t just sell their soul to work in the Trump admin, they were already in the DC machine and couldn’t get out and/or would rationalize why to stay despite their feelings and beliefs in the Mango monster. The author provides so many real explanations and it helped reconcile (in my mind at least) some of the rationalizations for how we got here. Not sure how to get out of the circus, but it helps to understand and maybe have conversations again with family and friends who went to the dark side!

Stunning

The most interesting aspect of this book is Tim’s personal relationships with fellow Republicans and friends during the Trump era (sadly still in effect). He details the world they chose to believe despite all evidence to the contrary based on their loathing of liberal Democrats. In the end, it’s a cult that history ultimately will reveal. Great read.

Narrator

Because I listen to Tim regularly, it was hard to accept his words through a narrator. But great listen (read), especially for those of us who have spent six years trying to understand why even one person would vote for or work for Trump

Excellent on every level

Tim Miller reveals the motivations and rationalizations of the professional Republican consultant class. And it’s truly illuminating for any lay reader interested in the current state of our politics and government. His writing is whip smart and entertaining, filled with memorable turns of phrase. I came away educated and entertained. Couldn’t ask for more.
