Abandoned by her family, alone on the wrong side of the color line with little to call her own, Eliza Meeks is coming to terms with what she does have. It’s a gift for communicating with animals. To some, she’s a magical tender. To others, a she-devil. To a talent prospector, she’s a crowd-drawing oddity. And the Bacchanal Carnival is Eliza’s ticket out of the swamp trap of Baton Rouge. Story
London De La Motte is not a believer in religion or religiosity. She never found a use for it, considering her troubled past and no place for it in her life as a private investigator. An encounter with a statue in a historic Catholic church sets London on a path of psychic vision and vigilante justice; righting injustices from the past and present. What she didn’t know is that her brush with Saint Cecilia’s graven image was far from accidental. It was destiny; conjured by Mama Bah, a voodoo high priestess some 25 years before.

Nestled between Little St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island, Salix Pointe is not a place that many people know of. Part of the Golden Isles of Georgia, all the weeping willows that grow there have led the surrounding town’s folk to call it the Island of Death. Elisa and Tasmin may not want to put too much stock into the folklore of Salix Pointe, but there is a reason that the universe has brought the two women together.

When I arrived at my uncle's house, I expected my relatives to be like me - outcast sorcerers who don't practice magic. I was right about the sorcery, but wrong about everything else. Rule two: Don't listen to the demon. My uncle chose a far deadlier power. He calls creatures of darkness into our world, binds them into service contracts, and sells them to the highest bidder. And I'm supposed to act like I don't know how illegal and dangerous it is. Rule three: Don't talk to the demon. All I had to do was keep my nose out of it.

The world is infested with demons, vampires, and ghosts who clash with wizards on the fringes of society. Faced with these horrors, there's only one thing a small-time wizard can do: absolutely nothing. Doing something could get a man killed. Armed only with a modern view of magic, a snarky bloodthirsty apprentice, and no concept of the phrase "fair fight", Maker is far too weak to try and change the world. But then a new group of warlocks moves into the area with the goal of making his life more interesting....

Publisher's Summary
My name is Zoe Daniels, and I am a Monster Hunter.
People in my line of work always have some sad stories that led them into this life.
Not me. I like what I do, and I am good at my job. But mostly, I do it for the money.
Girl’s gotta make a living, right?
Down on her luck and desperate for work, Zoe met with Ms. Olson, a potential client, about a job to track and retrieve her grandson, a child named, E. The boy ran away from home and now wanders the streets of Detroit. Zoe is reluctant to take the job, reasoning it was a police matter. But with mounting debts and an empty refrigerator, her eagerness to get back on her feet, drowned out the warning bells set off in her mind. Before accepting the work, Ms. Olson cautioned Zoe not too underestimate E. The child was far more than he seemed, she warned.
It turned out his grandmother was right. E has uncanny abilities, and its growing by the hour. Zoe pursued an uneven trail of chaos and destruction left in the child’s wake. At first, she thought the boy aimlessly drifted the streets. But as she closes in on her target, she discovers E has a mission that he’s dead set on finishing, and he won’t let anyone stop him no matter the cost.

Prestidigitation!
Our heroine, Zoe Daniels, is a monster hunter (read: paranormal bounty hunter). Zoe is hired by the old witchy-woman Ms. Olson to retrieve her run-away grandson “E”. Ms. Olson warns Zoe that E is more than a handful to deal with but does not elaborate any further. Zoe soon discovers that Ms. Olson had indeed neglected to tell quite a bit. Zoe needs help and looks up a witchy-friend to give her a hand. Just who or what is this E? Why did he run and what’s he up to? Will Zoe track him down and bring him back? Stay tuned to this witchy-channel to find out. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Great supernatural book!
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I loved the main character Zoe. She was funny, smart and kick-a$$. She dominated this book with her personality.
The book kept me guessing and I loved every second of it. Zoe spends the book doing what she does best- hunting monsters for money. There were quite a few twists and turns and the ending was really good. The character of "E" was very interesting and not what I was expecting.
So why did I mark this as 4 stars, not 5? The narrator was pretty good but I found her accents to be rather lacking when she tried to add them in. Other than that, she did really well and I liked the way she performed.

Zoey the monster hunter strikes big
I came into this book with no knowledge of the author or story and quickly fell in love with the book! The characters are funny, likable, and relatable. The super natural elements are great too. I love every second of the narration too! The book reminded me of a better blacker Buffy from the magic yoruba words to the gods from the Orisha. 5/5 would read again and read a sequel.

A really good listen
First, narration, as narration can make or break a story for me. The teller of the tale did a fine job of keeping my interest throughout. Now for the story itself. there are several characters and each is finely drawn enough to make me care what happened to Zoe, and to her witch friend. To traverse the story successfully, Zoe must go through changes that almost take her life, more than once. The monster she is hired to hunt seems just a child, but is that all he is? You will need to read or listen to find out, and I highly recommend that you do so.
