Story
An AI overseer and a human crew arrive on a distant planet to salvage an ancient UN starship. The overseer is unhappy. The crew, well, they're certainly no A-team. Not even a C-team on the best of days. And worse? Urmahon Beta, the planet, is at the ass-end of nowhere. Everybody expects this to be a long, ugly, and thankless job. Then it all goes disastrously wrong. What they thought was an uninhabited backwater turns out to be anything but empty.

Story
When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern - no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.

Story
Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First, he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce - and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So, we fight, to defend Earth and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Top 3 at least!
I guess out of 6 books to say top 3 may not be much but I have listened to all 6 thus far and enjoyed each. Great story, had most of my favorites back in action. Don't listen to this book unless you've read or heard the first 3 books.

A Good Place to End
I've been reading George RR Martin since before I knew there WAS a George RR Martin. I started with the Wild Cards series 30 years ago. I read the first few anthologies before losing track of the series between installments. This book, the sixth overall, reminds me of all the things I enjoyed about Wild Cards ... and those things that sometimes frustrated me as well. If you happen to own a physical copy of this book, give it a nice hard squeeze and the angst will start dripping out from between the pages. Of course, angst-ridden super folks was all the rage in the 90s when these books first appeared. There's "conflicted" ... and there's CONFLICTED. It just gets a little tedious sometimes, needlessly drawing the story out. The political story at the center of the book is also sometimes cumbersome. But the real strength of the book (and the series) is in the characters. This installment wraps up a major storyline, bringing some major characters full circle while leaving plenty of loose ends to untangle in later books. The performers/narrators are spot on, highlighted by the rumbling voice of Clancy Brown. If you're into the series at all, pick this up. It provides just the right amount of payoff. It may also be the perfect place to end if you're wondering whether or not to keep playing the Wild Cards game. For my part, I imagine I'll be back ... sooner or later.

The intersection of superpowers and politics
This is still an excellent book in an excellent series. There are elements that read as edgy when I read this years ago. It reads as inappropriate now, but overall the story is excellent. The intersection of real world politicians, believable problems, and colorful characters is entertaining.
