The Pequot War (1636-1638) was a short-lived but extremely violent and bloody episode in United States history. This event represents one of the turning points in the entire history of North America, as the war changed the balance of power. The Dutch colonial authorities lost their status of being the dominant economic and political force, while the English took over this epithet. The end of the war also represented the first stage in England’s intensive expansion in that part of the world.

It was, however, an awe-inspiring piece of history, and one that speaks of hope even today. Two hundred years ago, slavery had the Southern United States firmly in its evil grip. The only hope that these enslaved people had of escaping their brutal fates was the Underground Railroad. This fabled network delivered tens of thousands of escaped slaves all the way across the northern United States and into Canada.

Comprehensive history of William the Conqueror
This audio book gives you the foundation to understanding the characteristics of young William and describes the transformation of a boy into a major leader of a powerful empire. It introduces the people who helped to influence him and describes his relationship with them. The role models he was exposed to throughout his childhood and youth played a major role in his education and training and prepared him to rule Normandy at a very young age and even though there was a regent he often made key decisions.
This history explains the conditions leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and why it was fought. Events in both England and in Normandy led to this historic event which changed the history of both England and France and set the stage for future relations between the two great European powers. William's military strategy unified England and protected England from attack of tribes trying to invade England. William's organizational skills and farsightedness paved the way for his dynasty and for many reforms.
This audio book is professionally produced and is pleasant to listen to. The narrator is easy to listen to and easily followed. The research for this audio book is thorough and many surprising facts are revealed throughout the audio production. I learned many new things as I was listening, things I could have used when I was teaching world history. I would have liked to have had resources like this to help my students become more interested and to pay more attention to what I was presenting to them.
This is a great way to pass time while driving and learning history at the same time. In this audio book many things are presented which we have today and which we take for granted. Studying history helps us to understand our society and in many cases our laws. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn of the foundations of our legal system because much of the American legal system is based on English law which had its beginning with William the Conqueror. We owe it to ourselves to know how it started and how it evolved. This is a must listen and learn.

A little too much.
I normally love the details presented in the Captivating History titles, but this was a little confusing. Too many characters with too many of the same names, it was difficult to keep them straight and I had to rewind and relisten several times to follow the storyline. Matt did warn us in his prologue that the names would get confusing and he was right. This is one time I'd say fewer details would have been better. I don't know, maybe there is no better way of describing the events without going through all the significant players as confusing as it was to hear the same names over and over again. That said, this was a complete and well-researched biography of William the Conqueror. Also, this narrator's reading seemed uninspiring.

William the Conqueror and the building of an Empire
A fascinating account of William the Conqueror over the 59 years of his life until his death in 1087. It is a very full and factual story covering all the main characters, events, and important dates during his rise to power. So full, that more than one listen is required to fully grasp all the facts narrated. However, one of the benefits of an audiobook is the ease of listening to the same tale over and over again .
