It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

As all electronics in the world simply ceased to work, blue screens filled with information appeared before him. Drew was given access to a mana interface and a limited number of reality-altering crystals called Xatherite. Following the instructions on his vision-impairing screens, he "slotted" his Xatherite and changed his fate: He gained the ability to cast spells. Joe takes his first step into exile, and is promptly unable to breathe. This new Zone has a higher concentration of power, magnitudes denser. His first task is to survive, but mere survival is the least of his concerns. The Zone he has landed on has been in a state of constant war for thousands of years, a tug of war between the Elven and Dwarven societies. Not choosing a side is the same as declaring both to be your personal enemy. Though he is resistant, Joe reluctantly decides to go with the group he thinks will help him grow the most.

Infinite Worlds is the most popular VRMMORPG on the market. Its maps are so vast, developer Hard Rock Data utilizes a network of highly advanced artificial intelligences to control it. But it’s not without problems. That’s why Game Masters like Jeff Driscoll have jobs. The downside? He’s not allowed to play the game. Something about conflicts of interest and favoritism. His very boring and tedious job is to help players deal with the occasional bug that slips through the cracks and ensure they enjoy their time playing enough to give a five-star rating.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

The Buried Goddess Saga continues
Before I ramble on, let me just add that is a joint effort between (mostly) sci-fi author Rhett Bruno and Jaime Castle, who writes (mostly) fantasy. I’m not always sure of the dynamics of two authors creating a joint effort, but our intrepid duo seem to have this one under control. I read Web of Eyes, the first part of the Buried Goddess Saga back in February, and I liked it a lot. It was fun, fast-paced and mildly insane.
Zoom forward 10 months, and an audio copy of Winds of War came my way. Instead of just sticking with the odd couple formula of the first, they went with a slightly different tack. Whitney has taken Sora under his wing, looking to turn her into a thief of his quality (perceived or otherwise), but Sora has other ideas. They travel to Mei Ping, but find that trouble is following in their wake. An old foe has sent an assassin after Whitney, and even his prodigious luck might run out this time.
Torsten returns home, but faces his own woes. Lumbered with the boy king Liam, who has forged an alliance with the heathen Redstar, he must lead the Glass Army against the Shiatsu, but needs to watch his own back as Redstar tries to undermine his leadership of the armyat every juncture. But Torsten needs Redstar and his army if he is to win the day. Can he maintain a tenuous peace for the greater good?
So, here’s the good. The story is still fun, action-packed and mildly insane. Dour Torsten is constantly on the verge of blowing a gasket as he has to deal with Redstar and the king, who seem to be constantly undermining him. Whitney and Sora are often amusing, but their bickering can also grate at times, but Whitney’s ingenuity in face of certain death (or imprisonment at least) is still a chuckle.
Here’s the bad. It’s not the story, it’s as good as the last. It’s not totally the narrator. One would also imagine Idris Elba voicing Torsten or his sidekick Wardric. My beef is with his narration of almost everyone else. Whitney and Sora spend their time screeching at each other in some pseudo-Oirish accent, while Redstar sounds like some snickering pervert. It’s a pity, because the audio could have been really good otherwise.

Really enjoying this series
Great follow-on to a very good first book. The characters, plot, and writing are top-notch. I don't think it's hyperbole to say that this is right up there with the best of today's fantasy, such as the Stormlight Archives by Sanderson. I am truly enjoying it that much. The narrator was also excellent in this one. I'm impatiently looking forward to the next entry in the series!

Great Continuation of the Series
Winds of War is an excellent continuation to the Buried Goddess Saga. All of our favorite characters are back for another adventure. All of the characters except for Torsten have shown great character growth and depth. It seems like Torsten is a little short sighted and one dimensional though. The pacing is great as well. I didn’t find any lulls in the action, and it kept me entertained throughout the entire novel. Luke Daniels’ narration is excellent. He gives all of the characters distinct voices, and he does a number of accents very well. I can’t wait to listen to the next one.
The publisher has gifted me other books in this series, but I purchased this one myself. This review is my unbiased opinion.

A great sequel!
This second story builds nicely from the first and even though you could read it as a standalone story I would recommend reading/listening to the first before this as it will make it more rewarding. The interactions between the characters works well and had me laughing several times.
Luke Daniels is one of my favorite narrators and does another great job here even with some of the stronger accents.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to the next

Strong sequel and still more strong accents
Firstly, this is a direct sequel to book one and you should read or listen to that one first as it is well worth it and you will then appreciate this one much more as well.
Our three protagonists spend quite a bit of time being out of their depth in this book as the overall situation for the world has escalated quite a lot since book one, albeit the self-confidence of Whitney will rarely allow him to admit such a thing even to himself despite the new and returning enemies they have to face this time round.
I am not sure if the narrator is having fun with these books or not, but he certainly sounds like he is with some accents continuing to be a little outlandish at times, although thankfully he has either toned down the one he uses for Whitney or I have become acclimatised to it by now as that one no longer grates. I do still wish they would drop the reading of the chapter tags that signify who is going to be the focus of it, they are totally unnecessary with the performance and needlessly detract from it in the process.
Overall, this is a quality second book in the series that nicely builds on the good start of the first one and further encourages me to want to move onto the subsequent books in the series too.

Worthy 2nd story
Worthy successor to the book 1, as this time round Whitney has to escape an old enemy and the trials of Torsen become even harder this time as he has to face an army from the sand.
The action in this ,I thought was more suited to the personalities. And this is just a little more ingratiated than the previous book.
Best of all the sardonic humour comes alive and even Redstars narration doesn't grate as much as it did in book 1.
This has went from strength to strength and I hope the next in the series also performs just as well.
Narration i found was as expected and well done by LD as this is a lot easier to listen to compared to the first as the accents are a little less folksy.
Proof that you can also done good job without going over the top or you get used to it given enough exposure.
