Publisher's Summary

WINNER OF THE 2022 BRITISH BOOK AWARDS AUDIOBOOK OF THE YEAR: NON-FICTION

The funny, frank and full autobiography of the nation's favourite comedian.

It's the first time I've done this. Other people have written about me - or for me - but this time, it's just my own life in my own words.

In his first full-length autobiography, comedy legend and national treasure Billy Connolly reveals the truth behind his windswept and interesting life.

Born in a tenement flat in Glasgow in 1942, orphaned by the age of four and a survivor of appalling abuse at the hands of his own family, Billy's life is a remarkable story of success against all the odds.

Billy found his escape first as an apprentice welder in the shipyards of the River Clyde. Later he became a folk musician - a 'rambling man' - with a genuine talent for playing the banjo. But it was his ability to spin stories, tell jokes and hold an audience in the palm of his hand that truly set him apart.

As a young comedian, Billy broke all the rules. He was fearless and outspoken - willing to call out hypocrisy wherever he saw it. But his stand-up was full of warmth, humility and silliness, too. His startling hairy 'glam-rock' stage appearance - wearing leotards, scissor suits and banana boots - only added to his appeal.

It was an appearance on Michael Parkinson's chat show in 1975 - and one outrageous story in particular - that catapulted Billy from cult hero to national star. TV shows, documentaries, international fame and award-winning Hollywood movies followed. Billy's pitch-perfect stand-up comedy kept coming, too - for over 50 years, in fact - until a double diagnosis of cancer and Parkinson's disease brought his remarkable live performances to an end. Since then he has continued making TV shows, creating extraordinary drawings...and writing.

Windswept & Interesting is Billy's story in his own words. It is joyfully funny - stuffed full of hard-earned wisdom as well as countless digressions on fishing, farting and the joys of dancing naked. It is an unforgettable, life-affirming story of a true comedy legend.

I didn't know I was windswept and interesting until somebody told me. It was a friend who was startlingly exotic himself. He'd just come back from Kashmir and was all billowy shirt and Indian beads. I had long hair and a beard and was swishing around in electric blue flairs.

He said: 'Look at you - all windswept and interesting!'

I just said: 'Exactly!'

After that, I simply had to maintain my reputation....

Missing his Welles in the Keys

I met Billy Connery at Newark airport , he was behind me at passport control, and then again at baggage claim. We had several brief chats, and it was nice to meet your hero, and think even more of him after. Book was wind swept and very interesting . From fellow Glaswegian and Tim .

A book for all book lovers and generations!!!

This is a book for any and all to love, if you've watched one of his comedy performances and you enjoy it do not hesitate, if he annoys you go ahead and kick rocks. I originally purchased the kindle version of this book and mid way through it I managed to lose my kindle in the airport so I purchased the paperback so it and my replacement kindle would be waiting however I could not wait so I deleted half of my storage to clear it out and download the audible app and purchased the book for the second time (kindle version is included in membership fees) by the 4th hour almost half way I wasn't even wearing earphones/buds/headset I was just forcing the people and public at large to enjoy it even for just a moment 🤣 I was regretting that by chapter 5 because I was getting interrupted so often asking me what book was that? Sir Connelly is the anti hero I hope to be a female version of as I begin to grow old disgracefully and nod my head to sound of my own inner band!

An engaging read

I was quite well aware of Connolly's career as a comedian but not as a musician. Connolly's narration is engaging throughout and whilst its not the best biography I have read, well worth picking up and I learned a lot about the man I did not know.

Thoroughly Enjoyable

Great Job by Billy both in the writing and the performance. I was sorry when it was finished. I particularly love when he made the many references to performing on stage in Dunedin New Zealand...I saw him twice there and there were people quite literally rolling with laughter in the isles of the theater.

Funny, honest and tender

You'd expect an autobiography by Billy Connolly to be humorous, however what made this extra special was it's truthful nature as Connolly recounts memories and anecdotes of childhood and into adulthood.

You learn early on of the tough life he lived in his younger years and his yearning to live a different life because he saw himself as different or as he puts it "windswept & interesting". From there a whole personality was formed into creating arguably one of the greatest comedians of all time.

A true gem of a book.

Excellent - both poignant and hilarious

A frank and irreverent look back at what has brought Billy Connolly to this point. Now suffering from Parkinson’s, his voice sounds a little strained, but the narrative is compelling. I finished the unabridged version (8.5hrs) in under 24hrs - I just couldn’t stop listening.
From his appallingly abusive childhood, through his schooling, apprenticeship to going ‘pro’ as a performer, he keeps you riveted. On a couple of occasions he had me snorting out loud with laughter - and loses it himself once.
A great autobiography - thoroughly recommended.

Magnificent

A must for all fans of the big yin, Billy's story in his own words and voice, a mix of funny wee stories, tragedies and a wild windswept and interesting ride through life. At one point listening to this I achieved that kind of silent laughter when you simply cannot breathe anymore so you just shake uncontrollably. I'm delighted after all these years Billy can still get me in that state. I have no words of praise high enough for the book, it is, like its author, simply wonderful.

Irritating

Awful, one dimensional, shouty narration. The "story" is all over the place and jumps from one time line to another.
I managed to get through 5 chapters but could not take any more. Returned.

Hilarious, Honest and Definitely Interesting

One of the best autobiographies I’ve ever read and even better with the Big Yin telling it in his amazing voice.
The flow perfectly matches his stage style, no overly constructed chapters, more a timeline of individual moments that ebb and flow back and forth to tell the whole story.
Captivating, an open door into Billy’s rise to fame, adversity and honest approach to his life, never compromising and adjusting to all that life has dealt him.
Warning - listen in private or you’ll find yourself laughing out loud in public, and if you find yourself in this situation just smile, knowing it’s exactly what Billy would want to happen.

Fantastically vivid and interesting

This is a real audible treat, not only have I found myself talking in a Scottish accent but I feel like my new friend Billy is having a wee yarn over a cup o’ tea. (I’m not Scottish and don’t know Mr Connolly). I thoroughly recommend this sad, poignant, hilarious, joyous treat of an audible experience. You’ll not regret it.
