It's alright but kind of filler

The book is alright. The narrator does a fantastic job and has a wide range of voices. Even characters that only say a sentence or two get a unique voice.

My issue is all the policital posturing and xenophobia. I've read and listen to these books to have fun and get away from that stuff. Not for a simulation of most countries political climate.

The book probably could have been made into a few chapters in another book that made it feel like things moved forward more.

I did almost return the book because of the "malfunctioning" AI. It was okay for part of a chapter but it goes on for the whole book.

Great begining and middle still scratching my head

The end was a cliff hanger that kinda made me mad. I'm hoping it won't take long to get the next book

After 3 books:

I gave it a chance. Story has potential, but the writing is sadly lacking. Too heavily formulaic and choppy. Each “book” is really more like a “part” of a full book. More like buying a book one chapter at a time.
The performer has some talent, but should research pronunciations in. The mispronounced words were a serious distraction for me.

Great series, books to short

Series was great for free with premium catalog so I justified getting the third book for 1 credit for a 9 hr book. Unfortounately the rest of the series will go unread... I refuse to pay 1 credit for another 8hr book, if these are gonna sell for a credit they need to be bundled.

I wasn't with any of the MCs

There were four main storylines, and I wasn't on board with the MCs for any of them. It made it really difficult to listen. Also, by the end of the book, I felt like I'd just read some filler story that transitioned between the previous and the next without really going anywhere, and so there was no satisfaction from finishing.

(SPOILERS)

Kit Carson and the Pathfinders - these people are so judgmental, they wouldn't be qualified for a diplomatic mission to Canada. How are these the chosen ambassadors to another world? Also, they waste their entire time trying to talk to the leaders of a world that is *known* to be xenophobic, and when they finally get an audience with the king, seem confused when asked basic questions that would start the diplomatic process off on the right foot.

Ken Hale - his team has decided that the solution to their issue is to make dough boys, even knowing that EVERYONE in the settlement is against it, and then just seems shocked when the people actually rise up in protest.

Jared Hale - willing to sit idly by while tens of thousands of people die, unwilling to lift a finger until he saves his wife and daughter. Like seriously, let humanity die. He's the only one who doesn't have to sacrifice a loved one. I have nothing but hate and contempt for this character.

Mac & Sid - I didn't quite get who they were. Knowing they were machines, it was hard to get immersed in their banter. I found myself fast-forwarding a lot of their scenes because I couldn't stand Sid's glitchy speech. Maybe it works in writing, but it was irritating in audio.

Filler...

Disappointed.... Like a lot of other reviews have stated, I felt like this book was mostly filler. The Zeist storyline was boring and the continously repeating of the emperor and his surrender or die recruiting got old quick.

I just keep buying them

The Ember War universe is expansive and I can’t get enough of these books. Although throughout, nothing is concluded in this book alone, there are a few streams of stories occurring simultaneously taking up the time available. Next one is now awaiting me.
