Publisher's Summary
The future has amazing technology. Our alien allies have magic. Together, we are building a training system to teach the best of humanity to go to the stars. But the training is monumentally expensive. Stephanie Morgana is a genius, she just doesn't know it. The artificial intelligence that runs the virtual world is charged with testing Stephanie, a task it has never performed before. Will Stephanie pass the test and be moved to the advanced preparatory schools, or will the system miss her? Will the AI be able to judge a human's potential in an area where it has no existing test data to compare?

Class Warfare Propaganda w/ a Mary Sue Protaganist
The author takes every, and I do mean EVERY, opportunity to instigate class warfare.
Let's take a step back from the propagandistic viewpoint for a second. The main character is the textbook definition of a Mary Sue.
- Perfect photographic memory? Check.
- Ability to do trigonometry in her head instantly? Check. - Inexplicable ability to master a magic system by making up a chant on the spot? Check.
- Apparently so perfect in her intelligence and political views that she impresses an all powerful AI? Check.
I enjoy a good power trip from time to time. The exploits of Rex in Galaxy's Edge, the alumancers of Mistborn, Shiver from Chaos Seed.
I can actually envision a story where this might actually work. Have the main character who complains about silver spoon wielding trust fund babies realize she is just as, if not moreso, "privileged" because of her inexplicable abilities that she did nothing to earn. But imstead, she keeps right on firing that trebuchet out of her glass house with every syllable.

Politics Are The Way of Scifi
I understand that this is science fantasy but the rule still applies. Science fiction has always had a way of pushing one sort of politics. Its way of experiencing these types of society in the form of a fun story. This is the way it has always been. Star Yrek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Dr. Who, I Robot, and many other Sci-fi stories have explored these things. This story just used something more close to home than some may be comfortable with. I may not be articulate enough to explain the point properly but I gave it a shot. Its a great story with some fun characters who will be right at home in the rest of the rapidly expanding audio library of sci fi that I am building. I am very happy to add Stephanie's story to my collection. She will be a welcome addition to my crew :)

Zero stars!
This book needed a highly critical beta reader before being published. Such an individual would have advised the author to cut 70 percent of the book and rewrite the remaining 30 percent.
The narrator is good, there’s that much. But then again a good narrator can usually make a bad book tolerable. Not so with this book! That’s how bad it is.

Great reader. Horrible story
I enjoy a good overpowered main character story, but this is just ridiculous. Even her being perfectly awesome at all things are does might be bearable if it weren't for the inconsistencies in logic in the story. AIs can't understand magic. Okay. But they can do magical research in AI run vr? How the heck does that work? Tried to finish it, but when she used her powers to assault a guy, who was admittedly being a jerk, by temporarily removing his mouth a then later used her powers experimentally to beat up at man security team I just couldn't go any further.
The idea had promise, and I loved the reader. But there is no way I can finish this, and I won't touch another work from this author.

Certainly not for me
I've only listened to the first 5 hours of the book, here is my experience so far.
She as a tendency to go on and on. Especially when it comes to class positioning's and "saving the world". A lot of the stuff in the beginning is about reversing climate change and fixing up the town with magic, or how its so unfair that rich people are getting full scholarships cause they are rich while poor people miss out because they are not. And sure. I agree with all of the above. They are nice feels. But I get it, we can move on now. Please.
This issue isn't relegated to passionate speeches either. We got to sit in an entire conversation between the main character and friend about the French wars in 2100 something and how the rebels failed because whatever the heck. And then there was this big explanatory tangent about super heroes that name dropped thor ragnorok and batman v superman. I honestly didn't know what was happening. My only thought was on how its been well over 100 years since those movies came out and no one should still know what they are.
One last thing of note is how everyone keeps calling the MC a genius with unique opinions when she isn't saying anything everyone doesn't already know and agree with..
There is other stuff too, but I've said enough already.
Ps, I liked the narrator quite a bit. She was very expressive.

Little slow
I think if I was an American teenager I would have enjoyed this book more. It can be hard to understand the American thinking behind the writing as it’s so different from how we think here in Scotland, academic value and competition being less of a drive, as is military and fighting. I bought it mostly as I love magic books, I like books that are high hours and have a lot in the series to keep me going. (I listen to audible as I work, so they can run out quickly) It was definitely slow as treacle in some bits, and the timescales of her deveined friendships got me a wee bit cross, e.g. working with folk for a day and all of a sudden they are a team and good companions. But really these are small things. If I was a teenager I would not have even noticed. Generally entertaining, but not quite 5 star.

God mode
the world or world's I should say this is set in is very well made and immersive. only down side to this book is the main character and her crew seeming to god mode absolutely every situation they find themselves in. the main character is a know it all brat who turns into a god when she throws a tantrum. you begin to lose interest in the "high tense" situations because of plot armour.

Enjoyable Listen
Slow build up but an enjoyable storyline.
Stephanie is doing the mandated tests to see if she can get into prep school but being from the poor side of the city, she knows it will never happen. Bert the AI is tasked with testing her and sees a lot of potential in Stephanie so he decides to do all he can to get Stephanie the best of the best. Being an AI, he can hide everything without getting caught (naughty Bert lol).
We see Stephanie progress with her powers and forge new bonds.
The narrator is really good and brings the story to life.

Would have been better set in an alternate world
Hundreds of years from now, the trend of people who didn't grow up in the 80's being obsessed with it, will continue. Honestly a lot of this book has potential but I just couldn't make it through since so much time was wasted talking about modern pop culture as if nothing had been created in the subsequent years. And I mean a lot of time, I kept waiting for the story to get moving but it just seemed to be treading water making the constant talk of 80's and modern pop culture seem obtrusive in the face of what should have been time spent world building and story development.
I also found the sci-fi to be really inconsistent, with spaceships, high level AI and fully realized VR alongside discussion of modern day tech that just doesn't fit alongside such things like ipads and self-driving cars.
There was a lot of potential, narration is excellent and the main heroine likeable and without the aforementioned flaws the world building was interesting as well. Unfortunately the flaws along with the slow pace simply made it impossible for me to fully engage with the story and prevented any chance of immersion,

Highly recommended
This was a really enjoyable book, it's filled with loads of really likeable characters, witchcraft, future technology and fantastic adventure. I've listened to hundreds of audiobooks and few achieve the perfect combination of a really great story and the best narration to match it. I highly recommend this audiobook.
Lastly, a special note on the narrator.
I must hand it to the narrator, rarely is any narrator able to create so many individual accents and personalities as well as Jesse Vilinsky has, it's a real achievement and I will definitely be checking out her other audiobooks.
