Publisher's Summary

"Between the Christianity of this land, and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference." (Frederick Douglass, 1845)

The prophets of old were not easy to listen to because they did not flatter. They did not cajole. They spoke hard words that often chafed and unsettled their listeners. Like the Old Testament prophets, and more recent prophetic voices like Frederick Douglass, Dr. Eric Mason calls the evangelical church to a much-needed reckoning. In a time when many feel confused, complacent, or even angry, he challenges the church to:

  • Be aware - to understand that the issue of justice is not a black issue, it's a kingdom issue. To learn how the history of racism in America and in the church has tainted our witness to a watching world.
  • Be redemptive - to grieve and lament what we have lost and to regain our prophetic voice, calling the church to remember our gospel imperative to promote justice and mercy.
  • Be active - to move beyond polite, safe conversations about reconciliation and begin to set things aright for our soon-coming King, who will be looking for a woke church.

Eye Opening

Woke Church is definitely an eye opener. A must read/listen to anyone trying to understand the current stance of the church on issues pertaining to race and justice.

A little bit of doublespeak, but good overall.

I'll have to come back and edit this with a full review, but the author says things I agree with in general - my main issue is the vagueness of what challenges the black community faces culturally, the specific failures of the black church when it comes to serving its community, and the lack details on the moralizing of black church leaders and organizations when it comes to racial unity.

This book seems to have no problem listing what white people have to do to overcome their cultural obstacles - but when it comes to black community shortcomings the author gets vague, skims the surface or dances around the issues. I get the position we are in as far as racism - yes, I'm black - but if we are going to be honest I'd prefer it be 100%.

Needed for all my brothers and sisters in Christ.

If you are open to hear what God desires to do with in our churches of America, pay attention. Great book and great author. I really enjoyed it and it was challenging but I believe correct and biblically sound. Thank Dr. Eric Mason for writing this book.

Very Relevant Material.

The author was very relevant with his topics. I appreciated his practicality. Worth reading again because there were several nuggets to digest within the content that I need to rehear. The mundane/monotone delivery would be my only drawback on the audiobook. I needed some passion and conviction with some of them points!
