Publisher's Summary
The son of one of New York's wealthiest families is snatched off the street and held hostage. His parents can't save him, because this kidnapper isn't demanding money. Instead, he quizzes his prisoner on the price others pay for his life of luxury. In this exam, wrong answers are fatal.
Detective Michael Bennett leads the investigation. With ten kids of his own, he can't begin to understand what could lead someone to target anyone's children. As another student disappears, one powerful family after another uses their leverage and connections to turn the heat up on the mayor, the press, anyone who will listen, to stop this killer. Their reach extends all the way to the FBI, who send their top Abduction Specialist, Agent Emily Parker. Bennett's work life - and love life - suddenly get even more complicated.
Before Bennett has a chance to protest the FBI's intrusion on his case, the mastermind changes his routine. His plan leads up to the most devastating demonstration yet - one that could bring cataclysmic devastation to every inch of New York.

Not fit for purpose
This is a tense gripping thriller that is neither tense nor thrilling and didn't manage to grip me whatsoever! It reads like a made-for-TV movie with all the characters and plots as predictable and cheesy as you might expect from such a film. It whiled away a few hours of me painting skirting boards and wasn't irritating, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

Good Story - Shame about the awful dramatisation.
This is a gripping story with a good main narrator but parts are very poorly dramatised with annoying additional character voices, and awful and destracting background noises. For me it was ruined by them.

I Love Michael Bennett
Unlike the other 2 reviewers, I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book. I found the narrative, with multiple voices and sound effects wholly immersing. If you have read the previous 2 Michael Bennett books 'Step on a Crack' and 'The Teacher' then you'll love this one. The only thing I didn't really like was the romantic plot twist - I won't give it away, but... propinquity isn't everything!

great from the get go
as an Patterson fan, but mainly Alex cross and wmc series. this is a great series and found it excellent. I'm not a fan of some of his churning out, but three guaranteed good series are Alex cross, wmc and the Bennett series.

Niclely narrated and enjoyable to listen to. However the story isn't very memorable and is rather predictable.

another classic Michael bennett story
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this, very well read by all voice artists (despite a hilariously inaccurate Scottish accent that I literally burst into laughter after hearing). Listened to twice now and still got chills...

Too much unnecessary background music!!
I love the Michael Bennett series, but what's with the over the top awful music!! In my view it spoiled an otherwise 5 star performance.
